Being converted into flats
Grahamnharris - 4 Feb 2014 17:59
Agreed - although I did hear rumours that somebody had bought it and it may re-open??!! Anybody got any more news on this??
mcroyal - 1 Sep 2011 22:27
The Woolpack has been shut for two years, which is a real shame.
beerminx - 23 Jan 2011 18:16
Hmmm - I lived in Banbury for 2 years and this place was a decent attempt at a friendly boozer. I never quite got why they had that huge restaurant space at the back tucked away and only 5 or 6 tables in the front portion. This could explain its downfall - it was a food bar rather than a drinks bar and with the recession comes cheap shoddy eats, something I am sure the Woolpack didn't do. Someone with money should go in there and turn the restaurant into snugs and do cheap but home cooked European dishes. I'll just check my wallet....

Sadly this excellent pub has closed down. Such a shame in a town where only two other pubs -- Reindeer in Parsons Street and Bell in Grimsbury -- have any character. The rest are generally rubbish.
Braganca - 10 Apr 2009 23:40
hello dose anyone know the letting agent for the woolpack banbury cross! please send a messiage to [email protected].
gem24 - 24 Feb 2009 18:32
The best pub in Banbury, without a doubt!! Will the local business consortium be given a chance to revive this place?? Watch this space.
whotshores - 20 Feb 2009 09:36
Whenever I'm in Banbury I make a point of going to the Woolpack - a fantastic pub with a perfect selection of real ales in tiptop condition. I was shocked to turn up and find it closed - how can exceptional pubs like this close when all around is dross? Wake up people of Banbury - you should be protesting big time!!!!!
matty_northants - 7 Feb 2009 18:03
I can sadly confirm that The Woolpack is noe shut for the forseeable future.
A sad loss for Banbury.
imdownthepub - 5 Feb 2009 07:28
TERRIBLE news....went in Thursday 29/1/09 and the landlady said the place is closing Saturday 31/1/09....what an awful piece of news..as far as I can gather there are no plans to replace the current landlords who are moving to London to run a pub...so the best real ale pub in Banbury is soon to be no more....tragedy :[

Very good quality real ales, a must for anyone who cares about beer in Banbury and beyond. I'm a bit late posting this comment as I visited about a month ago but I'm sure it hasn't changed much!

Continues to provide the best range and quality of beer in Banbury. Always something new and interesting and always a warm welcome. Discounts for CAMRA members, just show your card and 2 per pint on a Tuesday night making it great value for the area.
How a pub should be.

I am strangely flabergasted by BeverleyH's comments.
I was in the pub all evening on the date concerned and the landlord was not even in the pub that night, in fact the only person serving was the usual girl who I think is from South Africa.
I also cannot see any relation to the reportee to the actual beers on that night, as usual they were top quality, were as clear as a bell and not musty.
I can only conclude for some reason BeverleyH's comments were not true?
banbarion_drinker - 16 Nov 2008 12:23
This a cracking pub - 5 ales were on tap including Best Mates Vicars Daughter, Hook Norton Twelve days and Teignworthy Climate Change. All four of the beers I tried were in excellent form. One of Banbury's treasures! 9/10
Booze_Allen - 15 Nov 2008 18:38
I am very surprised by BeverleyH's comments.

The beer is outstanding! Well kept, well served, and a variety of ales to try. I have never, ever had a bad pint in there. I have had beer that didn't suit my taste, but that's the nature of real ale - and they always seem happy to give a taster in any case.

The staff definitely (with no "a") ARE female friendly - in fact I went there this evening for their Thursday-night special beer-batter haddock and chips (outstanding) with my wife, and noted that women outnumbered men. My wife pointed out that it's the only pub she's ever been into unaccompanied without feeling uncomfortable. As we left we bumped into a couple of female friends who'd met for a drink in the front bar.

I must take issue with the claim about the landlord's attention to Beverley's chest. This has caused some discussion in the pub, and the interesting thing is that if the date of the posting is correct then all the staff on when Beverley went into the pub were female! It is defamation to make statements such as this, and I would suggest that a timely apology and retraction might be the most sensible course of action. Webmaster please note your legal liability in this regard.

I agree with Beverley that the Reindeer is a good pub, with good beer, service and, I would also say, a great building, but I would certainly not agree that it is THE pub in Banburyshire - I personally like both of them very much, and am glad we've got two excellent pubs so near each other - although I only rarely get into the Reindeer.

I would argue strenuously that the Woolpack has the best beer in Banbury by a long way, bearing in mind quality and choice, while the Reindeer has very good quality beer, but fewer varieties. The food in the Woolpack is excellent, and I have never noticed any smell anywhere.

For the record, I am not connected with any pub, other than as a satisfied customer. Beverley, can you say the same?
Aaaargh - 13 Nov 2008 21:03
Visited last night for the first in a couple of years. Not sure what all the fuss is about! Beer lacked clarity and aroma was 'musty'. Staff were definately not female friendly and the landlord was more interested in my chest than his beer. Went to the Reindeer afterwards and I can confirm that 'wellinformed' is not as his name suggests, with the beer, service and ambiance making this THE pub in Banburyshire!
BeverleyH - 11 Nov 2008 07:58
Went in again a couple of weeks ago for the beer festival twenty or so beers on all in exceptional nick. Particularly liked the dark beers, and a good idea to have them all together on the bar. Can't say i noticed any toilet smells (paul69) but the place was packed. Reckon this has to be hands down the best pub for ale in the area.
wellinformed - 5 Nov 2008 12:03
Went back in here last week and was pleasently surprised. Good range of ales plus excellent Cotswold lager - worth the visit alone. Nice staff, helpful Eastern European girl behind the bar, food pretty good too. Back area smells of toilets though.
paul69 - 26 Jun 2008 17:38
Well done - a real rival to the Reindeer but with a modern minimal twist. Very large dining room at the rear. Front room is small but not intimidating. Cracking beer on as well and very well kept. I haven't been since leaving Banbury late last year but I have had reports that it is still very very good.
paulio1966 - 8 Jun 2008 23:28
Enjoyed a couple of beers in this pub with its interesting interior.
gillhalfpint - 4 Jun 2008 19:12
I finally got around to visiting after hearing and reading a lot of good reports. I must say i wasn't disappointed. There were seven ales on, all in great condition, sip before you sup policy, i love it !
This place used to be one of the biggest dives in the area and has been transformed over the last three or four years. There is a huge collection of pump clips that bear testamony to the throughput of ales. I didn't eat but i must say the food looked good. It is a strange shaped building, quite small frontage but extends back a long way with two bars, a dining room and a small enclosed patio. As has been said before one of Banbury's best kept secrets. Do not miss.
wellinformed - 17 May 2008 12:14
Well run free house with the best real ale selection by far locally, all in tip top condition & with more to come apparently! Brilliant pub, unfortunately robbed of it's rightly deserved Pub of the Year title, but there's always next year...
whatsores - 14 Apr 2008 14:42
Been in two or three times in the last fortnight always at least 5 real ales on offer. residnet bitter appears to be Purity from nearby warwickshire plus four rotating others. Nice to see a dark mild on offer "Nailmaker" from Enville Ales at 4% a bit stronger than most dark milds....tried all beers on offer with their sip beffore you sup policy. All in tip top condition.
Menu a bit limited but food excellent, Occasional live music on offer too one of Banbury`s best kept secrets....not for too long though I suspect

Nice beer but far too cold! Is there any truth in the rumour the lease is being sold?

Thought I had better give this an update.
There is now an ever changing range of real Ales in this friendly and well run pub. Run as a free house, the Landlord can choose whatever beers he likes. The food is more popular than ever, making it best to book at weekends now. The no smoking restaurant to the rear has many nooks and crannies to make private conversation a pleasure. The bar at the front is favoured by the drinkers.
Highly recommended.
imdownthepub - 29 Apr 2007 08:55
This was a new one to us this visit and it was great to walk in and see a bar with such a good range of beers and all in good condition too. It was quiet when we called, but I liked the small rooms towards the back and the fact that there is a no smoking area. Don't rate the pale furniture that gives it an unlived in cold feel, but that will probably feel different when the pub fills up. Deserves to do well for the serious drinker after real alke.

Apart from binge drinkers in their teens and twenties the vast majority of Banbury's town centre pubs have little to offer beer lovers. So all credit to the refurbished and re-named Woolpack At Banbury Cross for bucking the trend. This has been transformed into a civilised pub with well-kept regular and guest beers and an imaginative bar menu. Okay, one or two pub bores still occupy the front bar, but elsewhere there is a selection of rooms and occasional activities to suit most tastes. Up to now only the Reindeer in Parsons Street and the Bell in Middleton Road were pubs for grown-ups, but the Woolpack has joined that elite company. We hope it all works out for the licensee and staff -- they deserve it.
Braganca - 9 Mar 2007 20:47
Pub thats improved its image no end. Welcoming front bar with stripped out look and busy restaurant to the rear. Always sells Adnams Bitter then 1 to 2 guests depening on season.
Well run and knowledgable Landlords, this is one of our favourite pubs in the area.
imdownthepub - 16 Feb 2006 07:57
Recently totally re-fitted. Nice for a quiet drink and chat. Foods pretty good. Very hot Aussie barmaid last time I was in, too.

Excellent, excellent, excellent!
Great choice of drinks, lovely set up and the food is superb!
Not a "boozy" pub but great for a drink and talk!
