Spacious London pub: nice and airy interior with clean lines and no "faux bohemian" junk like in some of the other neighbourhood pubs.
Very good range of ales: about 6 or 7 and in good condition and served in dimpled mugs. Prices pretty high: about £3.95 in September 2014 for a session ale. Simple pub-classic food but freshly cooked and tasty. Worth a visit if in the area.

Pleasant pub - found myself in Lambeth by accident but popped in here to find friendly community pub with Windsor & Eton beers and few others (Marstons, etc). Stripped down inside (the pub not me) and light and airy with wraparound bar in the middle. Staff friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

This is a massive improvement on the disaster it replaced. It has an excellent range of real ale that is well kept and rattles up an excellent, good value Sunday roast. It can get crowded as is already popular but much needed in this part of Kennington. If you can ignore the chattering family groups of the Middle class SE11 intelligentsia that pollute sections of this establishment then this is well worth a visit.

I absolutely love this pub since its refurb. Wonderfully friendly staff and a decent ale - and anywhere with Sambrooks on wins my vote! There has been, in my opinion, a dearth of decent pubs in the local area that slide between the pretentious (Grand Union, Three Stags) and the grotty (Dog House on a bad day), so The Ship is a breath of fresh air!

Just re-opened after a refurbishment. Watch your wallet as pints of ale here are an eye watering 3.65/75 a pint!!

This pub has been in the doldrums for quite some time but seems to have turned a corner. They now serve a decent pint of real ale (I don't normally like Sharp's Doom Bar much, but a pint (or six) a couple of weeks ago slid down a treat as did Timothy Taylor's this week). Problem is, they've only got one 'real' on at a time, but I think they're trying to get two more pumps working. I'm looking forward to having a choice!

I was a bit disappointed by this pub, it seems like such a decent pub but both times I've been in I've found the bar staff to be very rude. It's a nice traditional pub, and the landlord seems to be making an effort - good beer, lots of stuff going on - quiz nights, etc, but wouldn't recommend it unless you like being insulted by miserable staff.

This is sad. Was my favourite pub. But very unloved, Nothing works anymore. The ceiling fell in recently and the kitchen has not been used in years. Even the locals have abandoned the ship. Wish the owners would sell it or put a proper publican in it. Bring back Mick, no don't he would be gutted to see it now.

Good pub this one. A real find. You have a little of everything here, pool, quiz, D.J on saturday nights, ski sports, and at an affordable rate. Not many like this one left.

Pleasant pub. Comfortable & friendly. Worth dropping by for a beer.

I have recently been at the Ship, and pleased to see that they have a new young manager there, i am not sure of his name, he is scottish i think, or even could be irish.
Who i am glad to see seems to be taking an interest in running and working in the pub itself. When you step inside you can see that its a lot cleaner and better presented with new displays and more advertising which allows you to see whats actually happening in the place.
I would reccomend this pub to people as its great in my opinion, one side is full of locals, which is a good thing, the other side plenty of choice where to sit and chat with mates etc.
I can say i will definately be back again, i hope he is still there running it, as i liked him, he is very freindly.

Pleased to see that the Ship has a pool table back. It is rather nice to still feel that the Ship is a mix of old and new, almost a thing of the past now in pubs/bars.
midnightpoolchampion - 7 Jan 2008 21:44
Such a nice bar, with a good mix, I am surprised that it is not a lot busier.

Very nice pub, recently gone upmarket, friendly staff,
sky sports, watched the Rugby final there, what a night!! Everyone danced and cheered together, english and south african. That is what we need to see more of, everyone getting on together. Well done guys.

Cosy pub on the way between Kennington and Borough, serving Black Sheep, Courage Best and Adnams Broadside. Three bars including one occupied by a pool table.

Great pub, friendly staff, somewhere you can get a really good meal with a real pub atmosphere. Quiz night thursday, v.g. Sky sports, and one of the few pubs who have a pool table.

Wlaked in here recently and ws happily surprised by the cool, vibrant atmosphere. I've been a regular at the ship for years. However, I can honestly sya that it is the best it has ever been. Well done

What a great pub! My friends and I popped in a couple of Sundays ago and enjoyed a beautiful barbeque. The food was absolutely delicious, as were the bar staff!!! My friends and I will most definately come in again and again

Come across this pub by accident recently, and was very pleasantly surprised by the welcoming atmosphere.
Good beer, pool table, reasonably priced food.
Had a nice meal there one evening. Will definately go back.

Despite what anonymous of 13 Sept says this is anything but a new pub. When I saw his/her post on BITE it caused some confusion as I was sure that this was the place I used to have an occasional post match pint in during the 80s. Went back a couple of months ago to check it out and was pleased to find that it has barely changed from those days. No horrible trendy makeover for this place just good ales (Adnams Broadside was very well kept), good value food and amiable locals. Won't wait so long before returning.
johnkn7 - 12 Jun 2006 13:32
From the outside it offers promise but once in one is instantly disappointed. Ergonomically retarded - you'll find yourself slaloming between scattershot furniture on your way to the bogs - it's hard when looking around the place where it's best to take ones seat (never a good sign). A slight air of suspicion pervades throughout the local clientele but what really does it for me is the complete and utter lack of any discernible atmosphere. There's nothing heinous about this place but there are no redeeming features either. Something needs a rethink even if what that is I cannot quite say.
Good for: Passing families.

This is a fantastic new pub in the heart of Kennington. You are but a stone's throw from the Imperial War Museum and the London Eye.

There is a distict traditional London feel to this pub with great food and a great selection of drinks. More recently they have added a cappuccino machine and are fastly developing a reputation as the best up-and-coming pub in the Lambeth area.

The staff are friendly and well turned out and really do make you feel special on entering, during and leaving the establishment. They also show the biggest and latest football matches as well as numerous other sports. This pub is a real success story with a lot of the credit falling at the feet of both the manager and owners. Well done.

Whereas my other local, The Prince of Wales, is a little on the expensive side and a patrician pub, The Ship is cheaper and caters for us plebians. It still retains a cosey Edwardian feel with a few naval paraphernalia thrown in to remind us of its theme. These locals are truly a happy lot (if this were Portsmouth, they'd be a shanty or two bellowed in the sloop bar, aaarrgghh me beauties) and the bar staff are attentive and smiling. There are tables outside surrounded by adequate flora to shield one from the rabble on the street. Why, Charlie Chaplin's father probably drank a dram in this establishment, he only lived up the road.

A perfect pub. If anyone out there can find one bette I'd be surprised. Tasty food, nice drink and friendly locals. Pubs like this are a dying breed.

I really love this pub. So many pubs in the London area try and be something they're not. This pub is a great, traditional, welcoming pub. It does exactly what it says on the tin! I give it 10/10, 5 STARS!

I love this pub. Great homely food, drink and people

A fantastic pub with great ales

Just come home form spending the day in here with my friends. We're Aussies, currently residing in Camberwell, who are always on the look out for a good pub.

We did not find that here. No, we found a GREAT BAR! This is a really homely pub which is great to be in at this time of year. Coming into Winter, you could not find a better pub. Definately a pub to be in, nice and snug beside the fire, with a cool pint in your hands and homely hot food in front of you. This pub is simply great.

Great food, great drink, great pool table and its somewhere nice to get warm when you've finished work in the hustle and bustle that is the City. A marvellous place, back of the net
Darren "Dazz" Munne - 7 Oct 2004 13:13
I love this pub to death. It has great food and drink and a wonderful quiz on a Thursday Night. I'm not sure of the manager, but the barmaids are fantastic and the owners are the nicest people you could ever wish to meet
Patrick - 5 Oct 2004 13:52
A great family pub. Me and the wife go there every Thursday and Saturday Afternoon. Ale is top notch, as is the food and staff. Pool competition is excellent. Other pubs should take notice of this boozer to see what a perfect pub looks like and what it is made up of...

This is a fantastic pub. The staff, Management Team and Owner are all extremely friendly with not a bad word to say about anyone.

As others have commented, they host very enjoyable quizzes and have a superb pool room. After a long day at work,The Ship is a wonderful place to simply be...
Tom "Timmy" Hank - 3 Jan 2004 14:24
This is simply the greatest pub I have ever come across. As a seventy year old man, I've visited many a pub, so I should know! It personifies both excellence in beverage dispensing, atmosphere, and drink. The staff are always friendly and accomadating. The quizzes and other entertainment are always top-notch, leaving myself and other punters coming back for more. It is not only a pub for old folk like myself. Often I see my grandson and his mates down here to be met with "Gong Gong whar are you doing here?"

I've recently moved from Kennington to Islington. However, my local has not changed. I still pick up my comrades in my Ford Puma and drive them to The Ship (where I might add, I leave my car when entoxicated). Simply put, its a Superb Pub which reminds me of the good old days, the golden age of pubs!!!!
Tod - 3 Jan 2004 13:50
Really friendly solid salt-of-the-earth south London boozer where - shock! - people actually strike up conversation with you.

A proper pub. Good for all the big football matches. Nice front room and pool table. Quiz on Wednesdays.

Much much much better than the nasty Bar Room Bar at the top of Kennington Road.

Patrick - 19 Nov 2003 19:09
The best local in London! Great selection of beers, good pub food and a challenging pub quiz. Big screen, pool table and games machines. Beer garden too!
