Now a "steakhouse" bring back the church

To update previous review as I regulally pop in here for a few Pints as its just around the corner from my house. I seem to remember this was the Temperance Hall when I was young its still a nice Building inside. I find this Pub is not bad during the day time Or Early evenings During the week but I would always Avoid weekends & when there is Sport on as it gets full & very noisy. Worst aspect of this place is most the staff are absolute abysmal and arrogant with no Manners no Please or Thank you just slap the change on the bar and walk away. Prices are very cheap For food & Beer in comparison too most other local places on the Broadway but the Only Ales on are London Pride or Doombar and Both were served with far too much head. Much better Pub on the other end of the road with more choice of Ales.

Has been doing real ale for about a year now - nothing exciting London Pride and Doom Bar but both have been in good nick in recent visits. The Irish branding is just that - a brand - this is Mitchells and Butlers (Harvester, Toby, All Bar One etc). Food cheap and of the Harvester variety. Too large to be anything other than a bit anonymous and soul-less. Bit of a meat market at the weekends, with bouncers on the door. Once you've forced yourself past the smokers who clutter up and litter the front entrance, you are in a wonderful building as others have mentioned - but it should be noted that it was the Firkin chain who originally converted this disused church - not Mitchells and Butlers as someone else stated.
@brianbrain if you like Sky Sports you want to reconsider the John Baird - numerous screens and the big games tend to take over the pub - and I've never found it unfriendly.

Now the Green Man, Village, Well and slug are closed its one of the few remaining pubs. Aside from the poncy John Baird which is very unfriendly. A good pub, with friendly staff now that Karen the attitude woman has left. Who used to treat the place like her private fiefdom. Recommended -food good value and wide range of beers although awful for Sky sports -seem to resent showing sport and often upstairs only and low volume.

great pub - love the massive open space, great place to chill out with a pint and a paper or to meet friends too. Perfect.

worth a visit if only for the building

This is a strange one; I normally find ONeills fairly unexciting and a little to ladish. This pub is not an exception to the rule- it is ladish, the bar staff can be as miserable as any other chain pub, the bitter is best avoided and the food is bountiful and well-cooked but in chain pub tradition- not greatly interesting. So, an average chain pub? Not exactly
For one thing ONeills has a music licence which being an Irish themed chain you may not think that is a good thing but the music is a good, inoffensive mix of pop spliced with a little stroke me clover music. The other degree of separation is that this pub gives you that life long atheist dream of getting more than a little drunk in church! The shear mismatch of ONeills Irish flamboyance and the delicately preserved architectural curves of the church make this a really interesting evening out! For the historians ONeills have saved a nice building from going to waste or being turned into a bunch of poorly designed trendy flats!

Really good conversion from church to bar - good service and reasonable priced beer 2.95 for Heineken. Food seems reasonabley priced for London.
Certainly one of the better O'Neills and well-kept. Recommended and I will be back.

We love going to O'neill's. Always a really nice atmosphere even when there's big sport on. Food is excellent. Saw a band called Daft there a few weeks ago and they were brilliant. Always a good place to go for a laugh!

Really nice pub, the food is great and good value for money. The staff are always willing to go the extra mile, by far the best pub in Muswell Hill.
artless_igloo - 1 Apr 2009 23:14
Really nice pub. Staff are friendly. Always have a great time here

Refuse going here. They say they're over 21's, but it seems like thay really don't give a toss.
Went in there and the clientele were either 15 yr olds or 51 yr olds.
Feel extremely unwelcome and out of place everytime we go in there, usually end up down the rd to The Village.

I usually really like O'Neils they have a great atmosphere and generally good service, I have been to this O'Neils on several occassions and been disapointed, my first visit the barmaid forgot to charge us for our drinks ( great for us ) and there seemed to be a big gang of what looked like under agers sitting in the corner sharing a bottle off pear cider , none off the staff seemed bothered. My second visit was for a work party, I phoned in advance to check the bar was open untill 12 am I was told yes, on our arrival football was on there was only one person on the bar at any one time but three clearing glasses !! the bar was then closed at 11.30pm and we had 2 big unfriendly bouncers kicking us out at 11.45pm, The manager was no where to be seen all night untill we were getting kicked out and then just smiled at the bouncers, is it any wonder this pub is half empty on a friday and saturday night ??? I wont be back in a hurry unless they get a new manager, staff and bouncers !!!!

Great building and not too bad for an O'Neills

Do you know what Kiltyken below. I reckon they've read your comment. Was in there for the Rugby world cup and manager gave a speech over the microphone about respecting each others country so no booing throuogh anthems.

Is it me or are there a lot of flies? Apart from that can be a good weekend place to go
Ste111 - 19 Aug 2007 06:08
Walking up the steps into ONeills 3 weeks ago I was thinking to myself Oh god here we go, Ive got to try and talk everyone into going some place else. Thankfully I was completely wrong as I had a great time and ended up being the person who wanted to stay. I have also been back a few times since.

Saturdays are great for any sport that is on and then there is a little wait before the goods that are up for grabs in the meat market start filing in. The perfect Saturday venue for any blokes to be honest and there has been a gurning competition in the toilet every Friday night I have been in there.

Apart from one miserable barmaid the staff are very nice and you always get served the good priced drinks pretty sharpish however busy the bar.

If you like a laugh and don't mind what others get up to you'll like this place.

Lovely building, beers pretty good - went in yesterday with some mates with the intention of enjoying an afternoon of Rugby. Sadly this was ruined midway through, not by our Italy defeat, but by the bigoted bar manager who decided he had the right to mute the sound during England's national anthem at Croke Park.

Created a nasty atmosphere for no good reason at all, and certainly the other pubgoers I spoke to of whatever nationality agreed. Shame really. Won't be back there again in a hurry.

I've had many a nice night in this old place. It used to have an enormous Guinness Toucan hanging from the ceiling, which is sadly missed (it fell down during the night, apparently, and broke a table).

Upstairs bar, although with fewer beers, all the sporting events, sometimes two at once, which actually works out well because of the extensive balcony which goes round three walls, and all the little nooks and crannies to pitch up in.

The staff are great, and all speak English! And they stay (and have stayed) there long enough to get to know them.

In an area with some pretty dire trendy over-priced "wine bars" and "venues", this is refreshingly unpretentious, and is as good for a quiet afternoon pint with the paper, for sport, and for having a good night out on the lash/tiles/pull.

An O'Neills pub in a converted church - does pretty much sound like the worst venue ever. But actually this place is pretty good - and easily the best O'Neills I've been in anywhere in the country (yes, yes, I know the competition isn't that high). It is, as everyone says, great for football. But also always a decent crowd in, service is quick and friendly, atmosphere good. In fact, all good enough to make you forget you're in an O'Neills (phew).

Noticed in one of those new free ldn newspapers that this is the best place to watch the big international/premiership games in north london.True if your with your mates but probably not if you want a quiet one with your loved one.
If you haven't got a loved one probably a good to place to find one..

The architecture of this pub is AMAZING. An old converted church with clear remnants of the original interior.

No real ales, which is pretty bad and is the one reason I wouldn't come here more regularly.

Food menu looks good and is very reasonably priced.

They've got big screens and I've heard they've got Sky Sports (they weren't on when I went there).

They have live bands every Saturday, which is also a plus.

Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area, even if you only like proper beer. At least they've got Guiness.

Have to agree with others that this is much better than any O'Neills I have come across. It really is quite an impressive pub building. No one looks out of place in there - young, old, chavs and ponces all seem to get on ok.

Pretty much a typical O'Neills pub. As everyone else has said, great for watching sport and it's always rammed for football. The menu is par for the course - have to say the double bacon cheeseburger rocks - but nothing special. I took a non-smoking friend in there, though, and they were shocked at the size of the no smoking area - a couple of chairs and a sofa as you walk in. The setting, of course, makes for an interesting first visit though the novelty will wear off....
MikeyBee - 18 Aug 2005 15:59
It's better than average for O'Neills, chiefly on account of the splendid building, a converted former church as other contributors have said. But ultimately the usual shortcomings of O'Neills of no real ale and a chain pub ethos.
grecian - 11 Aug 2005 14:39
iv not lived in muswell hill for long, but i would strongly recommend the church aka onills to anyone who enjoys a no nonsense and non pretentious good pint. This pub has had new management recently and the locals iv got to know, say that the changes are all for the better; the food menu has been extended to include better lunch snacks, like wraps, and at a decent affordable price, which in muswell hill is a good and rare thing. My mates and me went in there on the day of the live8 concert and ended up staying there all night as they had it on the big screens. We also turned up at 8am for the rugby, and had huge great breakfast baps, which were luuuverley! we will be making this our new local. I met the new manager whois from dublin and made uis feel very welcome. well done oneills!!

great for sport, probably the best in north london. good athmosphere most nights and the food has got much better recently. staff are always friendly, now does table service for drinks even on weekend nights, a nice touch. if you drink in wetherspoons you will think this expensive, but, if you drink in wetherspoons you have given up your right to have an opinion as you have no life dont know what a good pub is' Overall a very good pub.

When I lived in Muswell back in 2001-02 the only good thing about the place was the fact that you might see Todd Carty on the Broadway. O'Neills in a huge converted church has the wow factor as you walk in but there after it's ignorant louts, poor lager and no soul. Avoidable unless you are obssessed with televised team sports.
danrkelly - 13 Apr 2005 11:02
Enormous converted church - look up at the ceiling and say hello to the large toucan. Can get pretty crowded, but a good place for sport (especially the rugby) - usual fare of Guinness and lagers at the bar
