user reviews of Bradleys, Fitzrovia

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

One of my favourite bars in London. Reasonably priced for the location, cracking continental lagers on offer and a friendly atmosphere inside. They had Budvar and Estrella on tap when I visited, both were crisp and fresh and went down a treat. The bar staff couldn't be more charming and made us feel at home straight away. If you ask nicely downstairs they will do music requests and upstairs has a well stocked jukebox. The regulars are a lovely mixture of Iberians, continental Europeans and thebafter work crowd.

Spent most of the evening downstairs with some friends after work, the affable and warm barman (Jan from Belgium) served us with great gusto and madenus feel part of the furniture. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this wondeful continental hangout to anyone.

Someone has written 'love will turd us apart' on the toilet wall which I founs hilarious.

Tiny space in here so that when you walk in you bump into their pride and joy - a jukebox that plays vinyl. There were quite a few of us on a pub crawl so it skipped enough times to provoke an curt rebuke from the bar staff. Sorry about that.

They do serve Cruzcampo, a pint of which is always welcome. Also the street this pub is on very quiet and a good place to get away from the masses on Oxford Street.

There's a downstairs bit too, which is equally as cramped as upstairs. This is a great pub, if you're one of the five people in here.

Given all the good reviews this place was a real disappointment for one reason alone. The gum chewing ignoramus of a barman, baseball cap the wrong way round on his head, could not even raise himself to a grunt, never mind a thank you. The minimal amount of change from a fiver for a pint of Budvar was literally chucked into my hand.

Maybe having rude staff is all part of the deal here. But I ain't coming back.

Fantastic bar, friendly and full of bohemian characters. Always pop in here when on Oxford St.
jamieb2012 - 9 May 2012 01:56
Always a great night out. Interesting characters, friendly staff and fantastic beer. A safe haven in the heart of London.

I used to visit this bar every three or four months when in town. I loved it. I have introduced many friends and family members to its charms, and enjoyed a memorable birthday there some months ago. I will, however, no longer be a Bradley's customer following an incident over the summer where I was subjected to a completely unprovoked verbal attack by a member of staff.
This man mistakenly accused me of banging on the jukebox, but did so by shouting at me in my face at the top of his voice. He didn't even say he was am employee at first. His manner was aggressive and intimidating.
Shaken, and feeling quite threatened, I informed the manager about his behaviour. The manager, however, did not repspond to my complaint and instead began to give me tips on how to work the jukebox. At this point the original employee appeared and proceeded to shout at me once more, except even more aggressively this time. When I continued to complain to the manager, he said, bafflingly, "Well, if you think we are being so rude to you, then maybe you should leave." Feeling both threatened by the original member of staff, and completely ignored by the management, I was by now feeling quite unsafe, so I left. But not before the first employee had decided to shout at me and my by now frightened companion yet again and steal our drinks before we had finished them.
I have since written twice to the Manager to complain and he has dealt with the matter with a staggering lack of sensitivity and zero professionalism. No action has been taken against the aggressive member of staff, apart from "we had a word with him", and no apology given to me except "we are sorry you feel that way."
After I left Bradley's that evening I discovered the Endurance in Berwick Street. If you want a fun, friendly pub with a jukebox, and to enjoy your evening without being abused by members of staff, then I suggest you by-pass Bradley's and go there instead.
seasideandy - 2 Oct 2011 20:32
One of my favourite pubs of all time.

Now, this tiny little pub will not be to everyone's taste but the Spanish beer is welcome and the atmosphere and truly eclectic music on the ancient jukebox is what it's all about.

Just to reiterate a recent poster, food is not served here though if the other recent poster experienced some kind of timewarp that dropped them back 10 years or so it would of course have been possible to grab some taps. In such a timeless establishment, anything is possible....

Be prepared to squeeze in as tight as possible on the limited seating, that's the way it works here, and meet your fellow drinkers in a way that just doesn't happen anywhere else.

The toilets are also just part of the experience.

Unique.
bobbyblah - 1 Jul 2011 21:38
Food? What food? I think the people below must be mixed up with somewhere else. This pub is a crusty hole in the wall with good beers and an excellent jukebox. Not the nicest toilets - but who cares... the atmosphere and music make up for that. If you want to here crappy popular music then go somewhere else.
This place is a true gem.
niaoz72 - 30 May 2011 00:51
The last post has clearly had too much Sangria and was in another venue as Bradley's hasn't served food for over ten years, unless you include English Tapas "Crisps and Nuts". Also may I add, a lime and soda will set you back about 1.80 if the fantastic array of lagers don't tempt you.

The toilets have been retilled and generally spruced up, while the walls remain laden with bric a brac and history.

A true gem of a pub.
mabrown1979 - 3 May 2011 18:31
fantastic bar only let down by my being charged 2.80 for a glass of soda water and lime cordial one night when I was drivin!! IT's almost enough to turn you to drink!. However, this shabby looking building is home to some of the nicest food you'll ever taste. The name Bradley's doesn't exactly shout out 'Viva Espana', but the authentic paella and gorgeous tapas wouldn't be out of place in a traditional backstreet cafe in Valencia.

Great juke-box too. All in all a very 'special' feeling pub (like something you only ever discover on your very last night whilst holidaying in a town abroad) but they really must sort out their soft drinks prices. Anything over 1.20 for a spirit glass of soft drink or cordial is simply unacceptable.
Firky1 - 19 Mar 2011 21:06
a real find, a welcome antidote to teh chain pub hell everywhere else.

good jukebox but is so small inside you might struggle to get in comfortably
TheGP - 22 Sep 2010 20:17
A magic little pub just off Oxford street, don't tell everyone though its like a secret drinking place. No ale but does have Spanish lager. Its querky and has a vinyl Jukebox and probably the worst toilets in the city!!
Anderson_Council - 26 Aug 2010 15:54
A rareity and a gem, Bradley's is one of a kind.
mabrown1979 - 28 Mar 2010 03:02
I love this place. Love it. Great surroundings, atmosphere, beer, spirits, and music music music!

Good people seem to come here for a thoroughly good time, and I shall certainly be among them for a long time to come.

But.

(and if this has been corrected, someone please say) the Gents is now a p***-take on the customers. It used to be amusing. Now it's insulting.

I really hope they sort this out before the licencing types get down there and take issue with it. Until then, it loses a point; still a 9 for me though.
arwilliams1947 - 3 Feb 2010 15:57
I always pop into this place with the wife whenever we're in the area - it's fantastic. We were sat right next to the jukebox (possibly the best jukebox in the world) just having a couple of beers. Nice pint of Guiness and an extensive selection of lagers which pleased my wife (not that she drinks a lot!). I'll definately be coming back.
Paulb014 - 9 Nov 2009 13:16
one of the few proper soho dive bars left. wonderfully scruffy, best jukebox in the west end, potty locals, truly abysmal loos and interesting spanish beers.

the best thing is that it's hidden away just yards from oxford street and can be reached by way of a cheeky side step away from the tourist hoards.

what drinking in soho is really all about.

porcus_volans - 13 Oct 2009 11:50
This is a small Spanish place with two bars that are very relaxed, although it has seen better days and the gents toilet is an abomination. This all probably adds to the good atmosphere of the bar as the posers and tossers that frequent most pubs in this area wouldnt be seen dead in here.

As is to be expected there are all kinds of foreign currency stuck to the walls behind the bar and all the staff that I met were Spanish and very friendly with it. The jukebox has many great tunes on it and the other customers seemed to have the same sort of taste in music as myself which was handy.

There is a selection of premium lagers alongside John Smiths, Guinness and Strongbow.

This is a grubby place, but I thought it had a certain charm and would travel to visit again.
Strongers - 6 Sep 2009 21:09
Wonderful dive
Brill juke box
Bring something solid if you are standing outside to batter the taxis with as they hammer down the narrow street.
baggydave - 5 Sep 2009 20:03
great boozer - shame they dont leave you alone outside anymnor
boomer - 3 Sep 2009 17:13
Great intimate little place with great atmosphere and interesting jukebox, but ........it has what must be the worst gent's toilet in London (and I've been in quite a few bad ones). The ammonia smell from the one urinal is unbelievably strong when the door is opened! A tip for anyone going to Bradley's therefore is don't stand or sit too close to the gents!! Still, I suppose it all adds to the ambience of the place!!
smudger69 - 20 Mar 2009 11:38
My affair with Bradleys has been ongoing for, blimey, nearly 20 years now, and I always try to pop in for a nostalgic pint when I'm in the area.
10 years ago, we started off at Bradley's for my stag night and never managed to get out of there, however I do remember finally lurching out of there in full make up (including toenails painted!) with a pair of knickers in my pocket, all dares for the evening completed.
Sadly, my latest visit on a weekday afternoon was an anticlimax, as my beloved downstairs bar was unattended and all lights off. I hope this isn't a sign of the times, as I've never seen this bit closed before. Reassuringly, in typical Bradleys style, the door to downstairs wasn't locked, nor even closed, so I wandered down and stood in the bar area for a minute, which hasn't really changed in decades.
Respects thus paid, I wandered off for a snifter elsewhere.
As it was closed, it loses a point. Otherwise, for it's stubborn "differentness" and fantastic beers (ok, as well as nostalgia), I would have given a 10.
glenn9ball - 16 Jan 2009 12:25
not a bad little bar.different to most in the area
which is a good thing
becks007 - 2 Dec 2008 19:33
cue the cavalcade of spanish girls, exit stage left for the bar Nazi. Still a good bar, despite the busybody glass collector/traffic marshall who herds customers from the road and tells them where they can stand. the man is a pest, par excellance.
theregent - 17 Jul 2008 00:05
Tiny, and usually rammed, but lots of character. Good selection of lagers, brilliant jukebox, and occasionally some attractive spanish girls hanging out. The toilets are terrible though, but maybe that's part of the charm.
swizz - 16 Jul 2008 13:15
Nice bar, this bar has bags of atmosphere which attracts a nice clientele. not sure about the roving bar nazi, all it appeared that his job was,: telling people where they couldn't stand. That being the only downside to this place, a good place to meet interesting people.
theregent - 2 Jun 2008 19:25
Been coming here for years and I must say you cannot beat Bradley's for catching up with old mates. Very social seating set up and of course Budvar on tap which is very rare. Was suprised to see the new lager arrivals last I was in London: Becks and Heineken. I would have hoped for Pilsner Urquell which would have made this place the ultimate.
JohnnyNZ - 28 Nov 2007 12:53
Cracking Pub. Great central location, Becks AND Budvar on tap, good crowd. The basement bar is the best, dark, dingy and full of atmosphere. Probably the best jukebox in London (old school, none of your internet mullarky and a small but quality selection of tracks). The gents STINK! - but hey - its a pub, get over it.
mauteek - 8 Nov 2007 14:37
Love it love it love it. Bloody fantastic little bar - definitely one of the best the Wild West End has to offer whether for a "swift one" after shopping or a proper session (and the former has a habit of becoming the latter in here), whether al fresco on the street or in the depths of the basement bar. You will enjoy yourself whether you like it or not. Just don't tell anyone about it OK? It gets quite crowded enough as it is...
tim_eyles - 2 Jul 2007 17:51
A remarkably good bar, especially given the unpreposessing location. A good range of lagers and an outstanding jukebox - covering everything from Nina Simone to the Pistols - make up for the timewarp toilets, which could be used as location for Life on Mars.
marqueemoon - 29 Mar 2007 17:30
An amzing gem this, complete with an old 7" jukebox with some classic vinyl. A tiny street level bar and a slightly larger cellar bar. Not really like anywhere else, and reminds you there are some classic places tucked away everywhere in London, even right behind the bland corporate strip of Oxford Street round the corner. Had a good pint of Bittburger. Of course real ale would be a bonus but then it is a Spanish bar!
OldRogue - 28 Dec 2006 13:58
Quality bar with quality beers. Toilets are like something out of a horror movie, but who cares - good for your immune system!
Oolybel - 7 Dec 2006 11:24
quality, whether drinking on the pavement, by the bar or in the cellar, a fine place to be.

10 seconds from the hell of the oxford road, but you could be a million miles away.

you can do a bit of celeb spotting as the big mercs ferry people to and from hakassan, but watch your toes as the pavement aint to wide.
propertyking - 29 Nov 2006 16:28
Corking boozer. Great jukebox, friendly bar staff who actually look pleased to be there and a lively clientele. If you don't enjoy your beer in this place you may as well go home.
AuntieBeryl - 25 Nov 2006 10:30
Hidden down a tiny sidestreet connecting Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, you'll find this fantastic little bar. There are two tiny bars, one on street level and one downstairs. Serves a good range of lagers (at extravagent prices - but this is central London...). Something a little bit different in the heart of the West End.
Crow_Valley - 7 Nov 2006 20:47
still a great little boozer, jukebox still the tops
londonrefugee - 20 Oct 2006 12:40
bestest little side street bar in london, escape the horribleness that is Oxford street and nip into Hanway Streets and Soho's finest, drinkiest, friendliest gem of a bar
edtoo - 6 Oct 2006 23:17
Didn't enjoy it really. Staff were friendly enough, but beer was expensive, even for this part of town, and it's just a bit grotty really. If you're in the downstairs bar you can smell the gents from inside the bar. The gents, incidentally, should be condemned. I (honestly) had to go outside for some fresh air afterwards. Won't say avoid it, because I'm not really sure what was wrong with it (apart from the toilets, of course). But something was, something.
Hzy - 16 Sep 2006 16:14
Didn't really get it, although it had some great reviews here. Stuck our heads round the door upstairs and downstairs and it just looked a bit gloomy and too busy. Might just have been a bad time of day to go.
Wooz - 16 Aug 2006 09:04
Always have a good time here. More character than you can shake several sticks at. Beer is great (best largers for miles around). The music is of course cracking. Favourite central London bar.
Jacko_byte2 - 30 May 2006 14:15
This place improves with age. When I first came to this place 10 years ago it was more a remnant of the old boozy Soho-Jeffrey Bernard et al. I don't ever remember any Spanish people drinking or working there unlike now.
crimsonpirate - 24 May 2006 13:53
Fantastic bar for losing afternoons in when you should be at work - especially when the mobile phone reception downstairs is patchy at best.
Great juke box, friendly staff, rough enough to put off tourists and most suits. Perfect. Except for one little thing, I can't take the beer any more. I don't know what it is, but 3 pints is my limit in there, then I have to move onto bottles or spirits. Any more than 3 and I get tunnel vision, my face goes numb and I've got no idea how I got home or what I did on the way. This doesn't happen anywhere else, except for Davy's in Canary Wharf and it's own beer; 1870. Still, once I've had four I might as well have 8 right?
shauntobewild - 17 May 2006 13:24
Lovely little bar - have meant to go in for years and finally managed it this weekend - will be returning soon. Cruzcampo went down very well and the nice Spanish barmaid was very pleasant. Tonnes of character.
pshuggard - 18 Apr 2006 10:36
God, I used to love this bar: the jukebox, the kitschy decor, the fact that it looks like it last had a good clean in 1972. But then I turned into a boring old fart, and now it's always busy and some of the drinkers seem to have disappeared up their own anuses. I'm probably just bitter because they're young and good-looking.
Tom_G - 17 Mar 2006 19:57
Relax bethm. We won't let it happen. We'll stage a protest, chain ourselves to the bar. We'll cling to the jukebox like tree huggers in the face of an axeman hugging a threatened tree. Oxford Street and its surrounds need another fast food joint like Egyptians need snow shoes.
iceinthecider - 16 Mar 2006 14:22
Probably my favourite place in London, though I was a bit disappointed to see that there were some modern tunes among the jukebox choices. The tragedy is it will probably be sold at some point to be replaced by an awful chain fast food store.
bethm - 15 Mar 2006 16:42
This bar is a little gem, tucked away down a side alley. It's small and intimate, and the jukebox is indeed a treasure trove of hip pop hits. The staff are not rude or aggressive, in fact they are most courteous. The crowd is quite hip, but always takes a dive in this respect when I turn up with blonde Graeme. Last night I pumped several pound coins into the jukey and only got 3 plays, although these were all memorable. Beware its hungry metal mouth - it swallows coins with reckless abandon. In much the same way as I swallow San Miguel. Too many fake rock fans from Central St Martins/Clerkenwell - when will this hipster plague die a death?

Must take Tim there next time he is in England (but watch that he doesn't overdo it and pop his shoulder out)
redshot - 24 Feb 2006 13:07
Sticks in the memory, this place. Friendly feel, and previous comments re the jukebox must be reiterated, it's tremendous (although can be choosy as to whether it accepts your coinage). Amazing that you can take just a few steps from the squalor of Oxford Street and find yourself in a pub with this much character. You'll feel right at home with a pint of San Miguel in your hand. Watch out for the bloke in the leather jacket and cowboy boots though.
iceinthecider - 24 Feb 2006 12:55
This place is a dive, in the very best sense of the word. Last looks like it was decorated (or properly cleaned for that matter) in 1972 but all the more charming for it. Great jukebox featuring among others The Ramones, Joy Division, Marlena Shaw and Sly and The Family Stone. The only drawbacks are the expense (but then you are a stone's throw away from Oxford St) and the fact that it gets crowded quickly (although you can spill out onto the street in the summer). My girlfriend was here the other night, and she swears she saw Ronnie Wood here.
suckling - 17 Feb 2006 11:54
Have had a good time in here, jukebox good, decent lagers. However the bar staff are horrible and aggressive and that ruins it.
anonymous - 17 Jan 2006 15:46
great music but you have to pay for it (jukebox). could do with a bit of a clean.
KVJ - 4 Jan 2006 14:12
Tiny and dark. Lovely place. Great jukebox. Wild Turkey usually available.
gussetmonkey - 6 Dec 2005 18:39
Charming place. Feels like you've been transported to the set of some cheesey TV soap from the 70's set in a Spanish bar. Of particular note is the orange formica table tops in the downstairs bar. If you enjoy cheap, tacky, slightly strange, hugely atmospheric, warm, laid back and unique bars then this is the place for you. No cask ales, but the Cruzcampo on tap is inoffensive and drinkable.
SilkTork - 16 Oct 2005 11:27
Great great place - great jukebox, great atmosphere. Love the beer (last time checked they had Cruzcampo, San Miguel, Bitburger, Budvar and Amstel on tap in th elager department). Lovely standing here just off Oxford street taking the micky out out of the Mercs going to nearby Hakkasan restaurant. Most of the bar staff al speak Spanish (not that I can!). My favourite place.
anonymous - 10 Aug 2005 15:53
Musically-this pub will not disappoint a discerning lover of contemporay music!!!Excellent vinyl jukebox which I am sure has won over a whole host of people!!!
The atmosphere is always friendly and pulsating also. The punter genuinely feels like an extra walking into a film set.

Yet, disappointingly the choice of beers and ales is not the best in the area, and aside from that I am really at a loss to know what is remotely Spanish about the place! Having said all that, a good 8 out of 10. Improve the beer, and the ratings would go off the scale!!!!

markwilliamson - 3 Aug 2005 21:13
Dropped in for a quick couple of pints on the way to a gig at the Astoria nearby and was sorely tempted to give the gig a miss and carry on drinking the night away here. A lovely hidden treasure of a pub just off Oxford Street on the road that loops round to join Tottenham Court Road. Decor was homely, old-fashioned but with a charmingly lived-in feel. Jukebox was excellent and played the kind of stuff that you wouldn't normally hear in a pub. Bar staff were friendly and efficient. Sadly most of the beers were off when I was there due to the high demands that bank holiday weekend drinkers had put upon the place, but the draft San Miguel was delicious. Not overly pricey for a pub in such a prime location either. Well worthy of visiting again and again.
Mr.Monkfish - 31 May 2005 10:32
the best bar in the world. many a lost weekend caused by drinking too much lethal Cruzcampo and speaking rubbish to strangers on a Friday night. wonderful jukebox, back to its best now they've put some reggae and country back on it after it started to get a bit too rock.
dbc - 21 Apr 2005 21:27
This is the best pub in the world - it has a great jukebox and great draught beer - budvar on tap!!!!

Arrive early to get a table and stay there all night - there are some really interesting characters who hang around in there who are always happy for a chat!
arkidcrispy - 4 Apr 2005 11:51
Great lager selection, superb juke box, a wee gem of a pub. Gets very busy though so arrive early.
edz314 - 28 Feb 2005 12:59
best juke box in London, no debate!
Bev - 18 Oct 2004 10:30
Brilliant brilliant bar - always a good night. Squeeze into the back tables and don't move all night. perfect.
Caroline - 29 Aug 2004 17:11
Great bar, especially in the basement. Superb jukebox.
Sleezy, but great.
Dave - 23 Aug 2004 15:00
This pub rocks. Thats all you need to know. get there early as it is dead small and it gets rammed.
anonymous - 19 Aug 2004 12:28
great pub but lets not have all the tourists in london comming to it, its a gem lets keep it that way!
simon - 11 Jul 2004 21:59
Great music, atmosphere, staff and beer make it one of the best bars around. Sadly it always smells of piss downstairs.
Rob - 3 Jun 2004 10:56
You love pubs with atmosphere. You love pubs with good beer.
You love Bradleys.
jeremy - 24 May 2004 18:05
Genuinely, one of the best five drinking dens in London. Lovely manager -Mark- and fantastic beer. Make the bloody effort and find it.
John - 20 Feb 2004 19:14
This, for me, is the best bar in London. Hidden away behind the seething crowds of Oxford Street, it offers a much needed antidote to the trend for converted bingo hall Sports Bars. Bradleys is absolutely tiny and you need to get there early to grab a table in the basement. The jukebox is one of the best in London, the beer is beyond comparison and the atmosphere is everything you would ever want in a bar. If it has one downside, it's the amount of braying, Armani-clad morons who seem to have adopted it in recent months, but they quickly learn to stop banging on about their sales margins and just sit back and enjoy the place as much as the rest of us. Top Notch.
Slipperduke - 11 Feb 2004 15:39
Why this has only managed a rating of 6.1 is beyond me. A true gem, depsite it crampt size. Great duke box with genuine 45's a la Heart in Hand in Brighton. The strong European lagers pack a punch and the decor exudes a rampant licentiousness that isn't dirty in the least.

fantastic boozer with a fantastic jukebox. thankfully the toilet smell keeps the majority of people away

Just a great little boozer. Top Notch. The juke box is wicked - and free, and the decor is warm and rustic. A definate favourite of mine. Bloody tiny though!

Love Bradleys - the best little bar in the world. Has the best jukebox in the world, at least it would be if it was working.

found it last year on my annual London visit... a definte for this year too.

Unpretentious, good vibe, small and The Kinks on the jukebox: the best bar I've found in London resulting in an all-day sesh last year!!

But by God, those toilets are fun ain't they?

The Best!!

Tiny, but lovely - great old-fashioned jukebox, nice staff, great ambience. One for a daytime session in the winter!

Tiny pub, hiding down a dodgy street next to Center Point. Has Bitburger, San Miguel and Cruzcampo on tap.

Possibly the best bar in the world.
This place serves as a springboard for nights that really go mental.
I can honestly say that whenever I've been to Bradleys I've never been home before 5am.
It's right next door to a tapas bar with tapas dancing and a mongolian BBQ/brothel. Simply terrific. Oh, and it's tiny.
