A fullers pub with Seafarers & Pride on. Bit of a trendy crowd in though it was a midweek evening. On the expensive side compared to other pubs.

The place seems to have improved recently since Fullers made it their third pub in the city.
Went in last week and found Black Cab Stout on tap which sort of made our day as the stuff has proved elusive so far, well worth seeking out and was also found in the Wykeham later in the day.
Friendly prompt service from the young girls behind the bar, and the place was more than half full too at mid afternoon too which is hopefully a sign of a return to the better days of this pub...given its location it should be busy all day?

My experience is somewhat different to Bernie5 and wolvsfan. I visited this pub last Tuesday whilst on a Pub Crawl of Winchester. Several Real Ales were available including George Gale- Seafarers, London Pride and George Gale Spring Sprinter. I plumped fro the London Pride which was very good Although the place was quiet as it was mid afternoon I was served promptly and politely. The pub has been updated internally at some time but still retains some olde world Charm. Background music at an acceptable level. Would I return - Not Sure

Agree with wolvesfan, bar staff are poor although the beer is usually ok and the food always looks good, although never tried it. The place could be heaving with locals AND tourists if they bucked their ideas up by 50% minimum. Landlord - get a grip and pull it together for its maximum potential.

This place is a leaderless disaster. But it's got 'oodles' of potential. the staff have not been in the least trained. The bar is a mess and ordering is a nightmare. This really could be a little gem. Time for the landlord/licensee to move on. 3/10

Took some Swedish friends to this pub last Saturday. Staff (vacant 18 year olds) were busy doing blatantly ignoring us. We waited what seemed like a long while at the bar while two staff went on about their business. In a complete absence of "I will be with you shortly" or "sorry to keep you waiting" finally one of them decided to take my order. I was mid-sentence when a third girl (vacant 19 year old 'managing' place) appeared and spoke to the one about to take my order, this caused her to leave without a word. I was left talking to myself. 'Manager' barely looked at us, just raised her hand so as to signal "wait". I complained and she said she had to send her stuff to lunch.
Shocking service. No wonder this pub is empty!

We went here for a meal on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy, bordering on very noisy.

We did book a table but there wasn't a table reserved for us and we had to find our own.

We really enjoyed the food, the portion sizes were good and so were the staff and the drinks.

Definitely would go again, although perhaps on a quieter night.

This place seemed to have some promise when it last re-opened, the staff seemed keen and attentive and there were some half decent beers as I recall.
Sadly several subsequent visits have seen the place nearly always devoid of customers, which can't be a good thing in a pub that used to be bursting at the seams a few years ago....

Oh dear - empty at lunchtime today! What's going on? I didn't cross the threshold.
dorsetknob - 15 Jun 2010 18:59
Has anyone tried the beer at this establishment?

Had Sunday lunch here recently. Although the food was fairly good, our dishes were swimming in gallons of gravy. A waitress got our order wrong, but it was soon corrected.

The biggest problem is the noise from the hard floor. Really! A lovely wooden floor and the management decide to employ slightly vacant 18 year olds who insist on wearing high heeled shoes and stomp around the room. It's like eating in a tap dancing school.

Either wear soft shoes or learn to walk properly. The constant clack clack clack really got on our t*ts and spoiled an otherwise relaxing Sunday lunch!

CLOSED and now reopened as the William Walker

Since re-opening i find the place has picked itself up, looks lovely. toilets maybe could have had a looking to but on the whole looks good.
The menu, judging by previous comment is very much similar with slight changes but still really good food! i understand it has been taken over by the same landlord who owns the exchange and alfie's, saying that doesn't seem like the toilets are top of the list in any of the pubs.
A little expensive, couldn't spend a whole night there but friendly barstaff just needs to pick up buisness to really get good again!

This pub has recently undergone a revamp. Although at time of posting this review it is still closed, it has a new name of 'William Walker' - most likely named after the 'diver' that saved Winchester Cathedral. Lets see what is in store...

Went in here based on other posts and were not disappointed by the food quality (and yes, the pizza was very good, especially for the UK) or the ales. Their staff were very helpful with local advice and the patrons themselves were quite interesting in many respects. Enjoyed the two teenagers who dropped in to get drunk and didn't much care what kind of liquor got them there. Watched them order shots of Sailor Jerry (was that Captain Morgan's cabin boy?) and later have a few pints. Not sure if they accomplished their mission to get trashed but we did by the end of the day. If you are in Winchester, this is one of the places to go.

Wicked Pizza, the BEST you will find around and about..... other dissimilar menu items may not be to the same very high standard but still prettty damn good ..... they need more bar staff at times so be prepared to wait a while for more beer .... nice to see a healthy stock of newspapers on a rack near the door.... NB: check out the Italian Newspaper and the chat among the kitchen staff for a clue as to why the pizza is so good ;) Bella!!!!!

Popped in today for a bite to eat having not been for a while. Food was really good, freshly made and good value. Staff are friendly as well. Could do with a bit of a makeover as looking a bit tired inside. Worth popping into.
Missbakergirl - 22 Jun 2008 18:40
Decent pub but a mixed crowd mean that the atmosphere can be very variable.

Previous reviews were spot on. Excellent food and a great pint. Excellent service despite being busy
arferjob - 15 Oct 2007 22:06
My new favourite, this place has got life. The reason could be bcos the owner is not from winchester. He & his chef are italian and the food is brilliant.
The pizza is amazing, the best i've ever had and not a bad price. They cook it in a traditional brick oven.
I like that it's not pretentious. They dont arrange the food in ridiculous fashion and the havent spent loads on fancy cutlery or napkins.

food and service are exellent. manager knows his wine, pub has an italian influence and the food is authentic. Clean and welcoming it is busy but not too loud - highly recommend!

Quite possibly the best pub of the day on our crawl, a super half of Ringwood's 49er with an excellent crowd.

Place had a buzzing convivial atmosphere in a nice location. Food looked good, but didn't sample.

Well worth seeking out if in Winchester, would recommend, especially on a Saturday evening. Shall be back!
Quinno - 23 Jul 2007 22:06
Busy and friendly.

Great pub good food, good beer and friendly staff.

Our new favorite pub for food and a pint! Food is very good with an extensive menu. Great fresh Italian pasta and pizzas as well as the usual pub grub, they are also willing to cook off menu. Prices are cheap as well! Well worth a visit.

This pub does great italian food and saying its right on the door step of Winchester cathederal, we were amazed at the prices. Has a small not smoking area. Its a definate for food.
cindersj - 20 Apr 2006 06:42
Great Pub, good selection of beers including real ales, fantastic food (in my opinion best pizza ever proper thin based Italian style with good selection of toppings). The pub has a good atmosphere, decent duke box, live music once a week (in the summer months) and a really good quiz night on a tuesday. Definetly one of the better winchester pubs.
gryffjude - 18 Apr 2006 15:50
In my opinion this is one of the better pubs in winchester. Decent beer, friendly staff and nice decor too.
yorts - 17 Feb 2006 15:08
Does not stand out from the crowd, but friendly enough bar staff, some real ales on hand pump, and a great location near the cathedral.
Mr.Matt - 16 Jan 2006 14:48
Always full of very sad people, last resort before you are deported or forced to drink in the Westgate.
It's position should make this one of Winchester's most popular pubs, there are worse.
bornandbred - 21 Nov 2005 17:01
Horrible stench of food throughout this pub. Could be good but isn't. Nice fire in the winter though.
