Despite its austere frontage it was a pleasant little pub with a good selection of beers at reasonable prices. Unpretentious but worth a visit.

Very good pub. Very wide selection of ales, with the local brew very keenly priced! Unlike many places that specialise in ale, this is actually somewhere my wife would approve of - the decor is reasonably contemporary and ambience friendly! Worth a visit.

Decent ales at excellent prices, not too keen on the open plan layout but you can't have everything I suppose!

Good choice of beers, but I don't like the layout. It seems to be a traditional snug, bar and lounge boozer that has had some of the internal walls ripped out to make it open-plan. I can't help feeling it would have been much better if left alone. Fuchsia coloured walls and patterned wallpaper too. Nice. If I'm in Slaithwaite again I may pop in, but I wouldn't make a special effort to go there.

Good choice of beers, all from independent breweries. House beer from Empire Brewery (200yds along the canal) is only 1.90 a pint. Railways station 5 mins up the hill and a bus stop for Huddersfield very close.

As mentioned this pub has changed in the past couple of years, although this was my first visit so cannot comment on previous incarnations. There were seven or eight local ales on during my visit all at very reasonable prices. Interior was somewhat formulaic and charmless but nonetheless, if you're doing the transpennine ale trail this is a decent stop-off.

No idea of it's pre-2009 life as the other posters but a good selection of ales, including a specially brewed "Commerciale" which is a decent beer. Nice mixture of customers from locals to walkers. Friendly environment, served by a very helpful and welcoming barmaid.

Forget all you read below, the Commercial was done out and reopened under new management in July 2009 as a wine bar (!) - cum - real ale emporium. 9 handpumps including a Westons cider, so far in very good condition and a wide choice, mostly fairly local beers. Owned and run by Johnny and Tricia of the Swan at Crimble who know a thing or two about a good pint. They are apparently determined to keep all the idiots out (theyll need to). Pleasant interior, usual faces and good atmosphere.
Worth trying at least once.

This pub has recently been completely refurbished by its new landlord (previously of The Swan in Slaithwaite), Jonny. There are about 8 guest ales at any one time, plus a good cider, and so far the range has included at least one excellent porter per visit. Don't be put off by the Commercial's previous incarnation - this is worlds apart. Range of coffees / hot chocolate / sandwiches available too, and some lovely local artwork.

Alas, new landlord, no real ales. No Sky Sports any more either.

Visited in early Decmber and again on Sunday. The landlord is intending to get guest ales in, but has not got any yet, so currently no real ale. Has Sky Sports.
