The low rating on BITE for the Lord Nelson really doe's not do justice to this excellent community pub. Also I don't understand the review by Craig Alexander. If he got in the Nelson more often he would see it caters for all age groups.
Now for the real positives. Beer always in good condition. The standby is Ringwood best. This is supplemented by one or two guest beers. Last week it was the excellent 6X & one other 'sorry the name escapes me'. The food is well prepared & competitively priced, with fresh vegetables.
I love the decor of the Nelson, the artefacts are real, not bought in to create a retro pub. Love the compact bars. This is a pub you feel comfortable in.
My rating a 9

Many a good time had here in my younger days. Lways worth a drop in to have a pint and watch the ferries go by!

Been in here a couple of times after a trip over on the ferry- needless to say the main attraction of Hythe is the 1909 train taking you to the ferry. This place, well, it has several really wonderful 'snugs', which I think, one hasn't got a TV in it, but not sure- but the pub structure is quite impressive, if not a bit too large- large bar at the rear and outside beer patio which looks out onto Southampton Water and the ferry train, so prob ok in Summer. There are some real ales, and I think last time I had a 6X which wasn't great, but drinkable and the glass stank. Not tried food in here but no reason it would be any better than barely edible. It's actually got some life, so its not bad.....stuck between a 4 and a 5 so have to make it a 4 on this occasion as not as good as Eagle and Child Oxford which I gave 5. Prepare for future update.

Pretty decent pub in the heart of Hythe. Did a good beer from the Gosport brewery when down there. With at least 3 different bars to the place there'll be one that would be to your suiting if the back bar is a bit noisy. Food very reasonably priced.

A pub with quaint bars as it ha been described, worth a visit to see, decent beer with a basic menu. Had a pint here and also some soup - both were very good but the food service could have been better on the day.

real ales are always in good condition though i have never eaten here its easily the best pub within walking distance 7/10

This is a very varied and great pub catering for everybody. It is nonsense to say football is on all the time in every bat (would be difficult - no TV in one of them) and the back bar leading onto the gatrden (overlooking the water) is lovely. Yes there are some roughish customers but only a small proportion - and they are no trouble in practice. The locals won the Radio Hampshire quiz 2008 - well done us!!
Give it a try for heaven's sake - whatever your type of pub you'll find a bar to suit you here.

'Rough Dive', are the only words to describe this pub.

Woolston, Sholing and Netley Railway Stations in Hythe's Pub Details are a long swim on a cold night.

This was a cracking little pub, but spoilt by the "Harvester" type bar tacked onto the end, and the owners obsession with football. If you like football on 24hrs of the day, on 5 different screens, in EVERY bar, then its the pub for you. I remember a very different Nelson when it was a proper locals pub, sadly that is no longer the case.

Really nice to find an unspoilt pub where the guts havent been ripped out of it. My local used to be a bit like this a few years ago. In Surrey we called the smallest bar the Snug Bar, in the Nelson it is called the Poop Deck !! Great little pub, even better now it is non-smoking. I counted 4 separate bars !

You see what Grossy has written below? This is the Nellie in a nutshell.
It's a bit of a dodgy dive but I like it. Nice little garden at the back overlooking Southampton Water. Guiness is nearly always excellent in here. Live music nights are a gas. Clientele is most definitely eclectic.
Food, no idea! Beer great. 4 bars (and they ain't big)

An excellent, if schizophrenic little place, seemingly crafted from two different bars stuck together. As soon as you go in, it seems like your regular "locals" pub; low ceilings, dark walls and a slight sense of foreboding. Keep on going, and it opens out into a much larger, lighter space and the excellent beer garden. Didn't get the chance to sample the food, but the beer's pretty good.

Excellent unspoilt pub. Unusual with lots of bars - seems to attract a rather dodgy looking clientele - but always friendly. Excellent beer, basic food but fairly priced. A real drinking pub.

This is the best pub in Hythe, Admiral Lord Nelson used to secretly meet Lady Hamilton here in the 1800s. It is a listed building and therefore has seperate small quaint bars. Does home cooked food during the day with a smoke free bar for those that dont smoke. Has Crib comps on Tues, Quiz Nites on Weds & Live music (covers) on alternate fridays. Has a beautiful garden with over 40 Hanging baskets in the summer overlooking Southampton water. During the 1st weekend in July each year, the locals organise a charity round-the-island (Isle of wight) cycle ride called the Cyclobooze, its been running continuously for over 21 years & has raised in excess of 100,000 for local charities. Has various Real Ales on tap & also a Beer Festival in August each year.
