Large bar area with a kind of function room off at the side. Garden at the back. Olde-worlde style decor with a mix of furniture. Just three beers on - Brakspear's Bitter' Oxford Gold and Hobgoblin. My Bitter was OK but really nothing to write home about. Another visit will be required - on a busier evening probably.

Nice pint of Brakspears Best with Hobgoblin, Oxford Gold,Morrelles Varsity also available. Nice friendly Pub with music, Secluded Garden, TV's Piano and Bar Billiards. Range of comfortable seating including leather chairs and Sofas. Well worth a visit. will be back soon.

Thanks to a sudden and unexpected change in my domestic history, I find Wokingham is now a kind of "Home from Home". I normally live in York, which is, of course, "Heaven on Earth" so far as good pubs are concerned, but I do find myself looking for a "local" when in Royal Berkshire. The Hope and Anchor (along with several others) might just make the grade!

This pub is not bad but decor is looking a bit tired and toilets need a serious refurbish. The best bit about this pub is its garden which is superb.

Hatie and Reid have done a good job, so much so they are the CAMRA branch runner up for Pub of the Year. Well done! They both make you feel welcome. Held society meeting to the left of the bar which did not hold up custom to the front bar or the garden. Beers available on my visit were Banks - Sunbeam, Ringwood - Boondoggle, Wychwood - Hobgoblin and one other. Beer served well too.

I stayed here a couple of times recently when working nearby and like what Reid and Hattie are trying to do. There are salsa classes on a Tuesday evening that bring a community feel to the place, the food is classic pub grub (with Canadian dish, Poutine, now and then thanks to Reid) and the rooms clean. Most importantly, the beer is very well kept and they have a good selection. Friendly bunch too, which was nice for an out of towner.
I hope they continue to improve the place, and that they get the custom to support it.

Seems to have picked up recently and is in the Good Beer Guide 2012 which must say something. Marston's range of beers with Brakspear Bitter ever present plus another 3 ales (I had a decent pint of a Bankss' seasonal ale). They have a garden at the rear with an Aunt Sally pitch and do B&B as well as daily food. There is live music at the weekend and the TV appears only to be used for major sports events. Much improved and worth a pint. Handy for the station.

I like this pub. I met some friends for a reunion in December 2010 and we parked ourselves on the shambling sofas at one end of the pub, partially separated from the rest of the bar by one of the fireplaces. It was very comfortable and relaxed. On the plus side: the beer is kept well; the peanuts are excellent; the landlord & landlady for very nice - friendly but not over familiar; the clientele are just right; the jukebox has a great selection of "classic rock"; there are local kebab van, a chip shop, Chinese and Indian for post-beer snack; the train station is 4 minutes away; and there are newspapers for whilst you are waiting. We took part in the Thursday night pub quiz, which was well run by the landlord. This was the only downside to the evening... we are rubbish at quizzes! A very nice pub, highly recommended.

Dropped in for a quick pint with a mate the other Friday and ended up staying til kicking out time. Well kept Morrell's Varsity was the main attraction but having said that once we'd finished it the replacement ales were more than adequate (just can't remember them now!) Warm welcome and excellent jukebox. Will definately be returning on a regular basis.

hi i resently visited this pub in wokingham and thought it was a nice pub great music and friendly pleasent staff.
the band were a little late starting. i can understand that i was a bit drunk so didnt bother me towards the end of the evening i over heard what i thought was the manager telling a band member to pack up and get the f@@k out of the pub with reduced payment.
i hope this was not true as he will get known for knocking bands then he'll have trouble getting bands
pleasent pub with friendly staff and from what i saw a very unpleasent and rude manager (avoid this pub) beer flat prices not good

Things have really improved recently in the Hope. It's under new management and I think he has really turned it around. There is live music at the weekend, which has been pulling in a big and varied croud of friendly local faces. The other weekend I bumped in to several peaple I haven't seen in town for a long time. It's good to see the Hope back on it's feet and to have live music back in Wokingham on a regular basis. Very pleased.

Having previously lived in Wokingham for a while, my heart sank when some friends suggested we go here but we went into this pub on Saturday night and I have to say I was suprised. I hadn't been in here for at least 3 years but it's under new management it seems. Live music was absolutely superb and the beer was good under the circumstances (was very busy). I'll probably go back and try it again should I be in the area when it's a little quieter - a definite improvement on previous visits.

Always had an up and down history - at one point this really could have been a pub to have been proud of.
These days it's either completely empty, or full of fights. Has had a number of drug problems too, and as for the beer; well - 50% chance you will get a flat pint.
Shame.

Seems like every time I pick up the local rag or speak to someone who lives in Woky there's a report about a scuffle in this place. Going to the dogs fast by the looks of things.
|
Got to agree with the majority here. Beer was either off or flat (mine were always the lesser of the flat pints when i went down with the a few mates on a friday night)Usually quite busy, however. I found myself sitting on the small table in the corner by the pool tables on night it was so packed.
|
I would tend to disagree with the regulars bit, never noticed an atmosphere and am always made to feel welcome but then again I don't resemble Harry Potter. Good booze, pool tables; just mind your friggin head on the way to the toilets - low beams ahoy!
|
Rather biased in their choice of music, so are other pubs though. Definitely a local, also quite hard to classify, but veering more towards friendly than 'you ain't from round these parts'. The Guinness seems ok

A locals pub for local people.. That was the general feeling anyway. However it wasnt unfriendly or anything
|
A bit of a let-down - most of the beer was either off or past it's best. It's decent enough inside, but needs a kick up the arse.
