Cracking Sunday Lunch.
|
As with other comments, the price of beer is the problem here. Popped into the Castle with my son and was charged 7.20 for two pints of Abbot's Ale. Mind you, at least the landlord should enjoy a comfortable retiremen!
|
Would like to reiterate the comments of previous visitors. This isn't my local but I do visit once every month with a group of mates. The prime reason for our visits is to have a good chat and of course enjoy some decent pints. The pub fulfills these needs very well and we cannot fault the real ales served in here. The Landlord really knows how to keep a pint and on the very rare occasion one is not quite right (normally bottom of the barrell) he is very quick to replace it with something else with no quibble. As with the other visitors' comments, the prices are high, but i guess you pay for the quality, although I would say, as others, I can drink beer that is just as good in the City of London for quite a bit less. Perhaps a lower price would entice more people in resulting in more sales and better turnover!!! That is my only gripe, otherwise a great pub. Note, we haven't tried the food, although it does look and smell good.

Have just returned from a brief visit to this pub, and found it a very nice welcoming place with a country feel. The bar has a number of large bellows and an open fire. The lounge seemed to be for diners. But there were drinkers too. 5 real ales were on - Fullers London Pride, TT Landlord, Harveys Sussex Best, Adnams Bitter and Greene King Abbot Ale. Addlestones cider is served. Yes the prices are a little steep. But I'd be happy if this was my local.

Good beer, well kept, usually 4 guest beers, currently Adnams, Ride, TT Landlord & Harveys plus stella and staropramen. Good cider too. Food good, decor good, good atmosphere, good landlord, good mix of local and non local clientele. Beer not cheap but worth every penny. Look out for special events - hog roast, morris dancing etc etc. So glad it's my local, so pleased outsiders like it so much too.

Duckstein below almost had this pub summed up in a single sentence. I would modify to say.
Good ale, good food, good location, good dcor, good atmosphere, empty wallet.
To elaborate more, The Castle Inn is tucked away down a leafy lane off the A320, in the stockbroker belt area of Surrey. It is a two bar pub with a dining conservatory bolted on the back. The bars are comfortable and festooned with farming and horse implements giving it that country pub feel. There is no garden, but benches out the front of the pub. There were four real ales on at the time of my visit. London Pride, TT Landlord, Harveys Sussex Best and a fourth one I can t remember. The Sussex Best was excellent and the Landlord was good. Now the primary reason for us searching this place out was as a stop en-route for Sunday Lunch. These were pricey at 8.99, but I will not quibble at that as both the quantity and quality were excellent and worth the charge. What I will quibble with is the beer pricing. All four ales were priced the same at 3.40! Come On !!! I pay significantly less for Pride and Landlord in City pubs with iconic views of London. But I suppose if your local clientele are mainly retired bankers and stockbrokers who dont bat an eyelid at paying those prices, then you can get away with it. And as always you do have a choice of a pint of Keg and plastic food in the Harvester down the road. So in summary, a really nice pub, slightly spoilt by a drinks pricing policy bordering on extortionate.

Lovely Local Boozer... One of the few 'Real' pubs left in the area
no...it's not technically a 'gastro' pub (thank god) but the food is always pretty good and the booze is excellent.
Landlord is friendly (and has lovely legs) , although he is a human and may sometimes moan about stuff that has annoyed him recently .... but then , don't we all ???
Reccomended if you want a chat & a quiet drink (or five) in a nice old pub
|
Went in for lunch and ordered a soft drink and a pint prior to the food. The outrageous sum of 5.00 was charged!! Meantime land lord and staff were moaning about the government not helping the pub trade in times of recession. At these prices I don't blame HMG for not coming to their aid. Decided not to have lunch as the prices were similarly high (10 for a burger). Drove back to the Harvester at the top of the road (no ales) and had an excellent value lunch for 4.99 a head including salad bar.
The Castle is a lovely old pub serving excellent beer but it's pricing pollicy makes it one of the most expensive places I have been to. Not really worth seeking out.

Good ale, good food, good atmosphere, empty wallet.

Excellent. Delicious TT landlord and Harvey's Best this afternoon, and massive open fire building up a nice smoky fug. Yes it's expensive but they don't do cheap round here. Easily the best stop on this stretch of the M25.
|
Welcoming, friendly local with a good choice of ales (usually 6)normally busy on Saturday evenings with diners. Good choice of dishes on the menu plus 3 specials. A bit on the pricey side but good quality.
|
Seems a nice country style pub at the outset. Good range of ales BUT 9.45 for 3 pints of Spitfire I wont be back.

Good beer, OK food, good atmosphere

This is my nearest pub and is lovely. Open fire and a real locals boozer. The food is great and the staff is friendly if you're friendly. Great on warm evening outside watching the world go by. Also has a very larhe non-smoking area. Non locals beprepared to be stared at!!
|
I cannot agree with the complaint that the food is not home made, just walk past the kitchen and you will see. Beer afficianadoes agree that the wide selection of real ales (which change constantly) are kept perfectly and there is also a good selection of wines. A truly good local and one that my overseas visitors reckon is what they expected of a country pub.
|
Good beer but the landlord can be quite abrupt with the customers, his manner probably accounting for new employees behind the bar almost every week. Food dreadful, not at all "home made" but tastes like frozen Tesco "value" food. Indifferent reception when complaint made about food that was well past it's sell by date.
By all means go for the beer, but avoid the food, there's better down at the Harvester for half the price!

This is my local pub, and is exactly what a local pub ought to be. There is always great food; good beer; friendly locals (mostly..) helpful staff.
Sunday lunch is epscially great and is currently served until 4pm. I can also recommend the mussels at the right times of year too.
|
A great local boozer, the Admans is always perfect. "Public", ie smoking bar very cosy. Food OK but a little expensive, supposedly always freshly home cooked but often tastes a little manufactured. Exception is their Sunday roast, usually very good. Seem to have a high turnover of staff though.

The Castle has been my local for over a year. It is a proper english pub! Not for chavs and football idiots. Good beer and a nice friendly, safe atmosphere.

> don't go there if you like pool tables <
Perfect! Don't come to the Castle if you like pool tables. A great pub with excellent food and well kept beers (and guest ale). If you fancy a change from the usual pool table and fruit machines, try the Castle.

I've been to this pub. Good food topped by good beer that's obviously very well looked after. A cosy pub but don't go there if you like pool tables etc.

Old pub of character. Good choice of beers. Very good food. Used not to take credit cards (not sure if this is still the case).
