A first rate local. 5 hand pumps with local ales - St Peters Plum Porter, Winters Ale X, Winters Sim'chronicity, Barsham Golden Goose so ales across the whole light to dark spectrum.
Ale X (as you can see from the name, brewed for the pub!) was excellent. 4.2% copper coloured and not a hint of grapefruit nor lychee, thank god.
Food served until 7pm, personally I think possibly one of the best pub meals I have ever eaten. Hearty soups and bowls of stews, chilli etc and the speciality, very reasonably priced and so very tasty, served with a welcoming smile.
Very much a pub to go on all ale drinkers pub crawl lists.

One of the great community pubs CAMRA is always banging on about but you rarely see. Beer from local brewery Chalk Hill - OK, but not very exciting. My CHB was in good condition.

This pub is still holding up very well with superb ales and good wholesome value for money grub. They obviously believe in the maxim of if it ain't broke don't fix it, as nothing has been changed to the detriment of the hostelry in the last 20 years or so. Well done to the management. Well worth a visit for lovers of traditional pubs and ale.

Superb back street pub, well worth the long walk from the station. Two bars, dart board, decent juke box, good local ale & food. The pool table wasn't set up which was a shame - this would have made it perfect.

For away fans visiting Norwich, this is well worth a trip if you get to Norwich early. The pub will organise a taxi to the ground as well.

Really good back-street local with excellent beer. One of the best pubs on a crawl of Norwich a few weeks ago - and there is plenty of competition in the that city!
newbury_drinker - 28 Aug 2011 12:22
plenty of ale, all good!

Above average Norwich back street pub. Decent real ales. Very friendly.

First time visit - excellent little corner boozer with Chalk Hill ales and a guest beer as well. Busy with rugby fans but we were served quickly and the barman even ordered us a taxi to the football. Norwich seems well blessed with good real ale pubs these days. This one is well worth the bus/taxi/walk and is near The Fat Cat.

Great back street boozer with a fair to middling selction of ales.

great little back street pub..i prefer this pub to the fat cat which is always packed, never had a bad visit
strawdog - 3 Oct 2010 15:40
Decent back street local, quite spacious inside. Friendly & welcoming, serves mostly the local Chalk Hill beers, which are well worth trying. Suffers in comparison to the nearby Fat Cat, but worth a look in its own right.

Splendid backstreet corner local that is positively bustling with activity. A very diverse range of characters to be found in this excellent pub. Well worth seeking out. The locals were extremely friendly and the beer was excellent.

Excellent street corner local unchanged in years. Had the local Chalk Hill Bitter which was on form. Somewhere where you may have to converse with other people (apart asking the barstaff for a pint that is).

This was our pub of the day out of 10 in Norfolk. It's a typical local in a residential area. As previous reviewers have said, there's a good mix of students and locals and the place was fairly busy. Three Chalk Hill Brewery ales were on alongside Oakham Bishops Farewell and Wells Bombardier. The various stew dishes looked tempting and we were forced to indulge - the pork and cider one I had was very tasty and value for money. Unfortunately, there is no real cider to complement it. There are two rooms - the front bar is traditional in the bar area itself and has a pool table at the end nearest the kitchens. Music is played. The other room is more like a lounge bar, but has a darts board near the entrance. I would quite happily return here if ever in Norwich.

In here last week on consecutive evenings - used to come here years ago. It has changed a little bit since, but no mass overhaul - had three CHB ales on and a couple of others - still a high quality friendly local boozer...just how I like em.

Lovely cosy, friendly corner local, although there is a warm welcome extended to all customers. Good food, good ale - need I say more?

Friendly traditional local that I visited last month. Friendly bar staff and customers and I certainly could have spent more time here. On handpump; Thwaites Well Well Well & Lancaster Bomber and rare outlet for Chalk Hill Beers with CHB, Tap & Gold. Apparently the landlord has connections with the owners of Chalk Hill Brewery. Sky Sports news is available on the large TV. The pool table was pretty popular whilst we were there.

Visited before thrashing Norwich 7-1 on 8 August. Had the range of Chalk Hill beers which were excellent especially the gold and the bitter. Fantastic food which was excellent value, last time I came here I had indigestion and couldn't drink but more than made up for it. Superb pub, every local should be like this one.
Monkdawallydahonk - 11 Aug 2009 18:42
Cracking boozer; good selection of well kept ale, usually busy with a nice crowd of customers (locals as well as students, unlike many of the other pubs round there), just a few years from Norwich's best chippy. Easily the second best pub in the Earlham Road / Dereham Road area, after the Fat Cat.
Stare_Smokovec - 25 Jun 2009 13:58
A truly fantastic local pub, great beer, dog friendly, gorgeous food, friendly and helpful bar staff, top notch landlords, and just a wonderful atmosphere. Definately worth a visit!!!

The Alex has been my second home for pushing five years, and i dont have a bad word to say about it. Great food, better drink and the bar staff are without a doubt the finest in the land. A must for all...... their football team could do with improving though.

Can't add a lot to what's gone before. We were recited poetry by a Yorkshireman with a broken arm. V friendly place.
Leicesterbeer - 14 Nov 2008 09:42
as most others have said, sells CHB! really great pub. I used to live 30 seconds from the Cat but still walked the extra to go to the Alex.

Some later opening evenings, thurs, fri, sat?

dog friendly as as well
beeroholik - 29 Oct 2008 04:38
Wonderful corner local in a little pocket of Norwich that is blessed with real ale pubs. Friendly staff as well. You could easily spend the day in here drinking the delicious CHB.
Crooked_Canary - 22 Sep 2008 11:53
A good selection of well-kept ales - always including CHB and a couple of guest beers - excellent food, a pleasant atmosphere and friendly staff and locals, the Alex is a down-to-earth boozer that's equally good in winter (when there's a roaring fire in the lounge bar) or in the summer (when you can sit at the tables or park your pint on the barrels outside). If you're fortunate enough to live in the Earlham Road-dreham Road area, then you probably - and should - already know this pub. But if not, it's well worth the 25 minute walk from the city centre. All in all, the perfect Local.

Varied Ales, Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, good food. Excellent place to have a few jars!

Friendly community local serving great ales.
gillhalfpint - 30 Oct 2007 08:20
Friendly staff, friendly locals and tasty ale. The food's good as well. Nice little selection of board games tucked in the corner - perfect for helping pass the time on a cold winters evening (next to the open fire). I could go on... but I'll just have to leave it up to you to discover for yourself!
The_Ace - 30 Jun 2007 15:12
Clean friendly local with substantial student audience. Not a bad pub but nothing to rave about.
The_Man - 3 May 2007 20:07
Popped in here for a pint on my maiden voyage to Norwich - really enjoyed it. Great atmosphere and great beer - will return.
angelus1981 - 16 Apr 2007 16:38
Great pub with a friendly atmosphere. The Pool table is popular with the locals. Not rammed like the Fat Cat and the beer is good as is the food.
timdaviesasw20 - 10 Apr 2007 11:29
Lively but friendly back street local serving beesr from the Norwich Chalk Hill Brewery. Food available until 7pm
ahscum - 24 Feb 2007 15:53
I felt that the beer I had was slightly on the warm side on what was an exceptionally hot day.
Alerover - 10 Aug 2006 15:55
Nice and unspoilt, beers always on form. Typical friendly local.
trekman - 4 Sep 2005 21:56
Jewel in crown of my first Norwich visit and going back tomorrow. Real "local" with belting beer and (unobtrusive) meals & snacks, great staff, best jukebox in world, a guv'nor who's rowing across the Atlantic and a football-playing dog.
ChrisdeBeer - 31 Mar 2005 16:45
Excellent local on the other side of the Dereham Road from the famous Fat Cat. For my money, with a more restricted range of beers, it manages to surpass the Cat for atmosphere and general bonhomie

Nice little local
