Malt And Hops, Southbourneback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
currently closed, tipped to become the next wetherspoon in Bournemouth
|
the word is, it's going to be boarded up next week, and that will be the end of the Pine Cliff Pub for all those genuine Southbourn people will remember it with the very best memories of a real community pub, it's just a great pity it cannot be put back to how it was. Without a doubt this Pub was the true Commodore of Southbourne, not the one hanging off the cliffs down the road!!!!!!

Not great, inexpensive, bar staff unbelievably rude, seemed to really resent serving me on a quiet Wednesday night. Surely the whole point of bar staff is to pour you half decent drinks and at least pretend to smile – otherwise you may as well drink at home. Toilets stank, I mean they smelt bad. Strange mix of people, generally not very friendly. Avoid if at all possible.

I live right by this pub, used to be good, but now the food is lethal (or non existant) the atmosphere is dark and threatening, the landlady is the rudest on the planet and the place is full of chavs. Highly recommended if you want a fight, food poisoning or abuse.

Avoid at all costs!!!! We used this as our local when we first moved to the area, but it's such a dump now we don't bother. The food used to be good but now it takes ages to arrive, is usually cold and suspect in origin. The last time we ate a roast there the chicken was stone cold, it was obvious it had come straight from the freezer and not been heated properly. We complained and got our money back. My wife complained to the head office only to get some rep ring and go on about how they have great plans for the place. There's only one plan in my mind - knock it down! The decor is shabby, filthy dirty and unhygienic. The toilets are utterly disgusting. The staff are completley mindless and disinterested in the customers. You're lucky to get a grunt out of them. The landlady is conspicuous by her abscence and allows her kids to use the place as their personal playground. I'm sure Orchid Group are just waiting for an offer from a developer to knock it down and build flats as it's a large site. Hope they do, anything is an improvement on what's there now.

I wont eat in here anymore, being diabetic, I just cant wait an hour for food, such a shame, I used to enjoy this place, most of the bar staff, except one male, are polite, but the service is terrible

I travel down from stroud once a month to stay with my girlfriend and have been coming here for years, the last 18 months it has gone down considerably, the food service (or lack of it due to time taken to serve it!) is the worst I have ever seen, several times we have had to wait 45 mins to an hour and a half, for aimple meal in a quietish pub, lunchtime, the toilets are filthy too, and a local told me there are people complaining all the time, come on landlord/landlady, get this pub back on track!

I have just retured from this pub and I am fuming. I ordered a small lunch for 3 at 1.17pm, the pub was empty other than a handful of people, somone ordere straight after me. 1.45 still no sign, I asked one of the to barman where the food was, he said its coming in a minute, 15 minutes later, I went to the kitchen door, and said again, this is not good enough, I was told it will be there within a few minutes, 15 minutes later still no sign, so i asked for a refund, at the same time, THE WRONG ORDER was delivered to my table and sent away as wrong, the other barman, who had been rude a year ago to me was rude again, gave me a refund,(wrong amount)i complained to the landlady, she said i ordered 20 minutes ago( a lie) and told me never to order food again in the pub, GREAT TREATMENT OF A REGULAR CUSTOMER!!!!!!!!!!! the other cowd who ordered after me at 1,20 got their combo for 2 (simple quick to cook) at 2.25! what does it take to get treated properly here!

I would like to say I totally agree with beachboy. I have seen elderly people viciously thrown out by the so called manageress....whilst abuse was hurled at these customers. The reason? Their food was still frozen and they dared to complain. I am sure there must be a case somewhere for physical and maybe verbal abuse. If you dare to take it up with head office...you get barred. Yes it seems that the Orchid Group (they own this pub) have alot to learn about the leisure industry.

Something needs to be done about this pub before someone dies of food poisening or some other ailment, most of the male staff seem to have forgotten what it is ti wash or shower, the stink as they walk past you is sickly, I have seen members of staff leave the toilet without washing their hands, then pick up a glass to serve someone, and as previous people have said, complain or make remark, and yes, chances are very high, you will be barred.
|
Used to be great...but the current management have let it fall to ruin. If you complain that the food is not the best...you get barred! In fact the `customer comes first` attitude is not something that happens here! Uncomfortable atmosphere, the staff seem to be bullied all the time too!

The Malt and Hops was once called the Pinecliff. Then it was a meeting place for bikers, but now it is less bad. In the days of the Pinecliff we tended to avoid it, but now it is the place to watch football. For those who prefer a relaxing drink, it is better to go there during the daytime. By the way, at night the lighting outside, makes the Malt and Hops seem evil and satanic.

Food is good. Live bands great. Friendly atmosphere.

Definitely an evening pub. Empty during the daytime and consequently lacks atmosphere epecially given the large size of the place.
|
Highly recommended live music venue. Top quality live bands every Thursday and Sunday night. Great sound, buzzing ambience, excellent choice of beers and lagers. If you are planning on getting hammered, don't drive, take the train to Pokesdown.
