Great pub, fabulous atmosphere, extensive and quality selection of real ales and truly outstanding food served in timeless and well presented style. Well worth going out of your way to visit this pub, in my opinion, it's by some way the best pub in this part of Essex and amongst the best I've visited in the UK to be honest.

Paid a visit in February and there were two nice coal fires to welcome us. Four beers on tap and the food was good at reasonable prices. I will be be returning.

Full of charecter with about 6 different rooms and a small garden at the back..5 beers on I settled for Norfolk Wherrys Nelsons Revenge a bit expensive at 320p a pint..
Other beers were Maldon Gold (a local beer) and Adnams.
Had a walk along the sea wall after with the dogs which were allowed in the bars.
Will return.

I shall be visiting this pub for the first time on Wednesday.

My brother who lives close by took me here last weekend. I asked if he could suggest somewhere with 'proper beer and a bit of character'. Look no further! This is a great pub. Shame I had the car. Grrr! The very low bar height adds to the oldy worldy feel, and the main event was very palatable. Thoroughly recommended.

Love the pub so sadly have to mark it down slightly after recent visits last week where beer quality was well below it's usual standard and was hazy & lifeless. Hopefully this was a one off.

Lovely pub, deceptively large inside but cosily put together. Only had one beer while in there, a Mancunian effort which was very nice indeed.

A wonderfully honest old pub in a lovely village on the beautiful Blackwater estuary. Combine with a local ramble for a great day out.

We had a welcome return to the Chequers on Friday. It was the last weekend of the 9 day beer festival. The beer festival still had about 10 or 11 different beers left. Those left were still pretty varied and a few I had not ever had before. An excellent area at the rear of the pub housed the beer festival. Certainly no cooling to the beer would be necessary with the temperature in this room. Phil looked after us in the beer festival and was on good form as usual. 5 hand pumps as usual in the main bar were also available.

A lovely rural traditional pub which still has many original 15th Century features. It says Pubmaster under all the pub signs but I understand it's now under Punch Taverns. Five hand pumped ales were available today. Caledonian 'Deuchars IPA', St Austell 'Proper Job', Flowers IPA, Otter Best and Sussex Ale. The pub obviously has a thriving Sunday lunch trade as the pub was packed with people eating. We had eat earlier today at another pub so did not eat this time. I am sure I will return at some time to sample their food.

Great pub, well kep ales and excellent food to boot.
Very friendly & welcoming staff and only 2 miles from the Swan @ Little Totham too which should not be missed.
|
A gem of a pub.A main bar with another 3 rooms(one with bar billiards)for a quiet drink. Two regular real ales and three changing guest beers on.Very friendly staff.A must.
|
Really nice pub in the finest rural Essex tradition, high standards, beer excellent, wonderful walks and other classic pubs (e.g. the Swan) close by. Very underrated part of the country.

This used to be a great pub when Trevor Jones owned it. Went in The Chequers for the first time in about 4 or 5 years, recently (July 2006). And unfortunately ate in there. Had fish and Chips, the fish must of been ethiopian as there was hardly any flesh on it, what was there was so heavily overcooked, the batter was almost black!! Beer was also Flat!!! Worst pub i've been in for years.

5 real ales but not much variety, they tend to be all similar. Have had some excellent food but also some disasters.

A real gem of a village pub that caters for the diner and drinker without compromising the quality of either.Regular Quiz & Curry nights. At least 5 Real Ales and a Beer Festival held in March each year.
