A real traditional pub near (but with no direct access) to the River Trent set on the Cavendish bridge. The bars are full of 'ale' related memorabilia, and always seems very popular. It is a Marstons pub with the staples Pedi, Old Empire and New world IPA, but also had three guests; Wolverhampton Brewery 'Sunbeam', Ringwood 'Showmans Tipple' & Brakspear 'Oxford Gold'. Food is real pub grub, and reasonably priced. The garden is a bit of a hotch-potch, with chickens and goats, an old phone box and (to be honest) need a bit of gardening. But, The tables are new and if you have kids there is a climbing frame and (even better) a Trampoline! Recommended...

Not in the current Beer Guide, but on return visit last Friday the Marston Old Empire was fantastic, and this remains one of my favourite traditional pubs. Welcoming to a wide range of customers, and the fish and chips were superb.

Popped in for lunch last weekend based on reviews on this site - wasn't disappointed. A friendly welcome, good service, and they could well with 9 of us arriving together. Sunday lunch was good - generous portions, and good roast beef (veggies were a little over-cooked). Good range of beers, but unfortunately driving so unable to sample - will definitely need to return.

Fantastic traditional pub, with it's own character though reminiscent of several village pub around Derbyshire (e.g. Dead Poets). Excellent beers from the Marston's range, good rolls and snacks, comfortable bench seating and as much pub memorabilia as you could dream of.

Visited recently on a Friday night and they had a mini beer fest on. Excellent beers well kept and a good atmosphere inside the pub. Didnt try any of the other pubs in Shardlow of which there are several but would certainly visit the Old Crown again.

After a recent crawl in Shardlow I found this to be easily the best pub. Though it was a Tuesday night there was a nice lively atmosphere as there was a classic car rally or something going on. There was also a folk group playing which provided a welcome change to the modern music that spoils the atmosphere in a lot of pubs. Staff and customers were all friendly. I counted 9 ales on the bar, all from the Marstons group. I must have tried about 6, all of which were in excellent condition. It would be great if the beer tie could be relaxed allowing them to serve a local brew or two, maybe from the Shardlow Brewing Company.

For a relatively small village, Shardlow is very well blessed with pubs. It has six on the Derbyshire side of the River Trent, plus the Old Crown which lies just over the border (the River Trent) in Leicestershire.
The Old Crown is a comfortable and relatively unspoilt Marstons house, a few hundred yards along a narrow lane off the A6 on the Leicestershire side of the Cavendish Bridge. This lane at one time was actually part of the A6 until the old Cavendish Bridge was swept away in the massive floods during the thaw that followed the winter of 1947.
That the Old Crown has survived for over 60 years at the end of a cul-de-sac, and is still going strong, has to be a recommendation in itself.
On my most recent visits all 9 hand pumps were in use and the beers that I drank were all tip-tip. I cant remember all of them but there was Pedigree and Old Empire from Marstons, a selection of Jennings brews including Cumberland and Cock-a-hoop, plus guests.
The food, which is perhaps a tad on the expensive side, is freshly cooked and I have no complaints about the portion sizes. The homemade chips are excellent.
The pub has an interesting dcor. Old signs, mirrors and posters decorate the walls and there must be at least 300 water jugs hanging from the ceiling beams.
An 8/10 from me

Cracking little pub with about 8 ales on at any one time. Unlike the Malt Shovel, the character in the place remains and has a dog and a cat often wondering around.
Usually very busy or very quiet but a must if you are in the area. The food is quite good if limited on choice.

Excellent traditional pub with superb range of well kept beers. We sampled the Marstons 150 Not Out, Brakespeare Oxford Gold and Jennings Mild all of which were spot on. Lovely old interior with toby jugs and stuff hanging from the ceiling. Seemed like a nice bunch of locals and a good cozy spot in a cold winter evening. For my money better than any of the pubs in Shardlow. Told the food is good too, although we did not eat there.
