Standard Charles Wells pub, not too big, corporate interior. Only two ales on - Bombardier and Red Robin. The red Robin was surprisingly drinkable. Has plenty of screens for watching sports - inc one over the urinals in the gents.

This is a blokes' pub, with little evidence of women except for the bar staff. It's also got a pronounced Irish element, so most of the drinkers were necking Guinness, lager or Magners. Lots of TVs showing sport, including a couple of screens in the urinals. The sound was too high and discouraged conversation. Of the 3 handpumps, the Bombardier was off, the Eagle IPA was horrible, and the Charles Wells Summer Golden ale was good. To her credit, the barmaid apologised for the vinegary stench of the Eagle and swapped it for the Summer Golden ale without demur. Not too bad, but I'd rather drink at one of the other 3 pubs within a stone's throw (Kitchener, Railway Bell and the delightful and quirky backstreet Builders Arms.

Was in here again last night The staff & other customers seemed friendly enough with good service I tried a few pints of Bombardier which was in good form. Looking around most customers were drinking Lager Cider or Guinness at the time but there was also Eagle on tap it seems to be a good sports type Pub with two large screens at front bar and a few others around the pub there is even screens complete with sound in the toilets above the urinals so you don't miss a goal whist having a wee. This is a large L shaped Pub at front with a large extension area at back where there were a group of customers eating. There is also a good menu of traditional Pub Grub if you peckish. All in all its a good traditional drinkers pub for a few pints playing darts or watching the football. Well worth popping in when passing. (The review below was posted by Akapub in error was meant for the spoons and I must say I agree with his comments its a dire place this is a much better drinkers pub.)

Apologies all my review here, was meant for the Railway Bell Not the Railway Tavern.

Go here at your peril. The new guvnor is a nutter. A face as long as a fiddle. She barrs people at the drop of a hat. Shes been heard to tell customers off for laughing too loud . I was in there Friday just gone and it was a nightmare, only 2 or 3 ales on out of the 8 pumps. Most of them seem to be brewed by the famous brewery' available soon,! It obvious since the refurb all they are interested in is folk sitting eating their microwave meals. Drinkers are definately second class citizens here. Why the guvnor works in the hospitality industry beggars belief. She obviously hates having to desl with the general public. Maybe she should reconsider her career options. Maybe mortuary attendant or tax inspector would be more fun for her!

Was in here recently staff & other customers seemed friendly enough service tried a few pints of Bombardier which was OK after the first pint which was a bit warm. Looking around most customers were drinking Lager or Guinness as it seems to be more of a sports type Pub than an Ale drinkers Pub judging by the number of large screen TVs. This is a large L shaped Pub at front with a large extension area at back where there were a group of customers eating. All in all its a good pub for a quick pint when passing.

very friendly pub, good real ale and guinness, carvery was very good, prices value for money ,plenty screens to watch football(inc loos),landlord and his wife and staff were very helpfull, would highly recommend.

3.40 for a pint of guinness is a bit pricey for out of town.Felt this pub is a bit clannish ie.not friendly with outsiders.Still, the guinness was good but I can't understand why bar staff cannot look at tables to see if anyone is ready to order another drink. There were only a dozen customers and 2 bar staff.I will not be returning.

I think that this is the best pub out of the five or six in New Barnet. The pub was busy, but I was served promptly in a friendly manner. Youngs Ordinary, Eagle IPA, and Bombardier were all available along with standard lagers. The crowd was mixed and seemed very nice and the pub has Sky and Setanta that is shown on numerous plasma screens, there are even a couple on the wall of the urinals so that you dont have to miss a kick when nature calls.
My Bombardier was very good making this place my pub of choice in the area.

I think mr monkfish may just be the tennant at the railway tavern!!! ha!

This is a well run pub, very efficient and friendly staff. The home cooked food is excellent especially the roast dinners. Great beer and atmosphere, well equipped for us smokers especially the outside screen. worth a visit

I am now officially in love with this pub. Sunday afternoon in here is a little slice of nirvana. A nice crowd of customers but not too busy, great friendly barstaff and landlord as ever was very hospitable and attentive. Beer (Eagle Smooth) was delicious and reasonably priced. High Quality TVs showing the football made it a good place to while away the afternoon, but best of all was the Sunday Carvery. Not sure where some previous reviewers ate, but it almost certainly wasn't in here! The roast dinner was absolutely delicious and came in portions that myself and my equally "rotund" mate struggled to finish, depite the fact that the girl serving us apologised that there wasn't much left. Can't begin to imagine how big the normal serving is! At 7.95 a pop, you really can't complain. It really is hard to see how this place could be improved for such occasions!

what a great pub watch to watch football in. good crowd..a lovely drop of Bombardier and wait for it....TV screens in the gents toilets. So, if you really need to have a lash but cant tear yourself away from the match this battle cruiser is a must

Can get rammed at the weekends. 'Live' music on last time I was there - but demonstrating everything that can be wrong with live music in pubs. Good if your gran wants a little dance though...

I must have gone by this pub a hundred or more times on the bus but never thought to venture in until Friday night just gone and I now regret my previous oversight. Friendly and spacious pub with a good range of drinks(including the always welcome draught Red Stripe. Seating is comfortable and there is a small beer garden. Bar staff are friendly and do their best to keep the beer flowing when the pub is busy but sometimes are less than 100% successful in their efforts. Food was lovely and came in generous portions and the price made for very good value for money. Nice bustling atmosphere without getting too boisterous and the falt screen TVs would make this an excellent venue for watching the football. Highly recommended and the fact that a couple of my friends are moving nearby over the coming months means that I'll have a good excuse to drop by more often in future.

Always found service friendly in here, often shows England etc 6N rugby even when there's some meaningless soccer game like Bolton v Sunderland on in every other pub. Well-kept Charles Wells real ales, always clean, doesn't get too smoky. Can seem 'locally' to outsiders. Avoid on Arsenal/Spurs matchdays unless you enjoy the company of white van man-types with double digit IQs.

Generally a good atmosphere and has a handy late licence but can get rammed full for football games. Probably better for a quiet pint when Arsenal or Spurs aren't on telly.
|
Nice pub, but not sure about the pictures of young men on the walls.

service is very very good and food is fantastic quality which is the reason the tavern won pub of the year, the staff dont look like they're enjoying the job and the atmosphere isnt very friendly, id go for lunch but avoid it at all costs in so far as going out for the night is concerned
|
