Our final stop in Devon was the Royal Oak. It took us much longer to get here than normal, as the main road into the village was closed. Whilst it was already dark, we could appreciate that this was the archetypal village pub situated in the centre of the village overlooking the village green. There is a lounge bar which served food and a more basic and traditional public bar. Staff were friendly. 3 regular beers are Dartmoor Jail Ale & Meavy Oak Ale & St Austell Proper Job. The guest beer was Otter Amber. Ciders were Hunt's Wobbler & Barn Screecher & Sandford Orchards Old Kirton. They also had Black Rat Perry. Certainly a very nice pub. But I did have high expectations after reading reviews.

Everything has already been said about this pub has been said and it is true. World class setting and area, beautiful to sit outside on a summers day. My father and i just had two pints halfway through our walk, if we did'nt have the car we could easily have stayed for 4 or 5 and caught the bus home!
One of the best pubs and settings in the country
10/10

I have visited this pub several times in the last four years since first being taken there . No matter what the weather , time of year or anything else it has the feel of a proper country pub . Fine selection of ales , always in good condition , food looks good and the staff are always friendly . Locals and tourists seem to mix easily and overall a great place to go . I make a point of it every time I am in the area .

This is a great little pub in a great setting and even better allows dogs in the bar. They serve the a good range of ciders and ales not the normal draughts avaliable in most pubs. I think the food is the weakest point, its ok but in my opinion over priced when compared to other pubs which are within a few miles, also the menu does not seem to change very often. Steaks are of a high quality but the battered fish is not great. The batter is to heavy which detracts any flavour or taste from the fish which was very disappointing when costs are considered. In short, great venue, great ales and ciders but could do better food wise.

Last Thursday I popped in for a quick pint after a cycle ride. I selected the Dartmoor Jail Ale Bitter but while the barmaid was pulling the pint, the barrel ran out. She asked me if I would mind waiting and I said I wouldn't. She called the guvnor who went to change the barrel. he then pulled through a quantity of beer before sampling it and holding it up to the light to check the quality. he did this a couple of times. The barmaid then pulled me a completely fresh pint and when I proffered the money she declined to accept it, saying that I had had to wait while they changed the barrel. How refreshingly different from many other pubs I could mention when this happens, where there is no attempt to change the barrel (or it is changed but not pulled through properly)and an alternative is offered, often costing more, with no apology. The beer from the new barrel was excellent by the way. I wasn't there for a meal or to spend lots of money yet I was treated like a valued customer - I will be back on the strength of this ecellent customer service.

Amazing pub in an amazing setting. Full range of the Dartmoor Ales and food equally as grand.

Proper Devon pub with a great atmosphere, wonderful beer and friendly staff. Can get very busy but they always seem to find some room for you. Good selection of reasonably priced food (in bar and restaurant). The chips are to die for!

When you hear the phrase 'village pub', your ideal image is something akin to this reality.Unspoilt view, bicycle bell tolling in the background.... Dartmoor and St.Austell Brewery favourites on tap, as well kept as you would expect. Bar staff who take the time to know you as well.

Just got back from a week in Dartmoor and revisited this pub on the basis of the info that children are allowed. ITS TRUE!!! kids can go in one of the bars but not the other, but in fact it was such a lovely day we all sat outside and had a brilliant lunch with a great glass of Jail Ale. Warm welcome, what a pleasure. I'm upping my rating.

Children have been allowed in the pub lounge for the last two years, however the bar is still adult only. Stephen & Julie have made the pub very welcoming, its clean and the food is simply superb. Most impressed by the friendly service and the beer is excellent. We will definately be back soon.

I agree that the food and beer here were great last time I visited, however that hasn't been for about 6 years as that's how long it's been since we haven't been allowed in with children! Can't understand this very blinkered attitude, especially in a national park tourist area.

Had a lovely weekend in Yelverton at the beggining of Feb and this is by far the best pub for miles. Great local atmosphere, this pub is full of character, open log fire and I would agree with the last comment and go as far to say that I had possibly the best steak I have ever had here! A MUST to visit if you are ever in the area.

Made several visits during Dec '07/Jan 08, sometimes just for a pint or two and sometimes for a meal as well. A very friendly pub with excellent ales, both local and from afar, all kept in superb condition. Tried a steak one evening and was able to congratulate mine hosts on the best steak I'd eaten anywhere for a long time.

Haven't been for while, but only through lack of opportunity. This is a cracking little country pub, with plenty of genuine atmosphere and friendliness, in an all-too-rare 2-bar interior. The Jail & Dartmoor ales are always well-conditioned, and provide a worthy accompaniment, along with a well-balanced wine list, the range of home-cooked foods, which are equally excellent. A really cosy experience, especially on a cold and wet Autumn/Winter day, and well worth digging out.

The Ex master mariner from below has now gone and a local couple are now running this beautiful pub. The "Oak" has always been a good pub and is now beginning to have the feel of a great pub! Good real ale always on offer, one of my favourites is the "Jail Ale" fantastic pint, they always have a couple of real cider's on, Westons on Hand pump and then usually a rough cider behind the bar served from the cask. The food is good and has got better and the young couple are really trying hard to make a go of this pub. The building it's self is outstanding, in the summer you can sit outside or you can sit on the village green opposite under the very old Oak Tree an din the winter months you can join in with the locals in the bar and feel the warmth from the huge inglenook fire place. Sometimes they have live bands play here and Seth Lakeman sometimes drops by for a bit of a jam session, all adds to a fantastic atmosphere, the hub of the community i would say!

A genuine dartmoor village pub, with excellent local real ale (Princetown Brewery). And the landlord is an ex master mariner with plenty of tales to tell.

in a tiny village deep into the moors . this is the real deal country pub, this was what i had been looking for .
if you're cycling in the moors, find this .
has a separate dining-room, which doesn't affect the pubiness of the pub .
probably closed around at around 3p.m. to 6p.m.
