user reviews of the Rising Sun, Nutbourne

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

We had to double back to the Rising Sun, as it is still one of the local pubs that closes in the afternoon. But, it was well worth the effort. Parking is on the lane next to the pub. The front of the pub is ivy-clad. Once inside, the wonder of the place emerges. With its bare boards in the main bar, the pub has maintained all of its traditional features, with no hint of modernisation. Passageways lead to smaller rooms, some for dining. There are some intriguing knick knacks, as you wander around. We eventually found the garden at the rear. It's another gorgeous area, with some parts undercover. A jeep can be seen in one corner. The owners were very friendly and keen to chat. The ale range was not the most inventive - Fuller's London Pride, Young's Bitter, Harvey's Sussex Best Bitter and I think the 4th was St Austell Tribute. But, my attention was drawn towards the Addlestones cider at the end of the bar. Despite my extensive travelling around pubs, I hadn't seen any Addlestones for a few years and assumed it was no longer made. But, apparently they keep it for a local female regular who drinks the stuff. Easily my favourite pub of the day. Not quite a 10/10. But, a firm 9/10 from me. A lovely discovery.

The only thing wrong with this pub is the lack of car parking. Not that it is a problem. Good beer food and wine. Friendly bar staff. Whats not to like about this place. Decent sized garden when the weather permits. Definitely should be sought out and tried.

Charming village freehouse in the beautiful Sussex countryside. Big rambling garden at the back, and a rustic-looking rather bohemian interior. Seemed popular with locals of all ages, but friendly to visitors. It's a free house with 3 or 4 interesting ales on offer. Beer quality seemed good to me.
(Note: check the opening times if planning an afternoon visit. I think it opens for lunchtimes but then shuts until the evenings.)

I worked at The Rising Sun over 20 years ago now and it was fantastic then.
Seems like it hasn't changed and the standards still as good as then.
What a great place after all this time and your reviews reflect this.
Cheers guys have goods memories of those days with Regan, Janice, the boys and of course the dogs.

An update to my 2009 entry. This pub still retains all that was stated in 2009. A friendly local with the ale in top form. Cottage Vulcan from Somerset, Andwell's Spring Twist from Hampshire and Langham Hip Hop from West Sussex were in excellent condition (all sampled in a lunchtime session). Fuller's London Pride was also on tap. Well worth the visit that did not disappoint.

For some reason the beer quality and selection has taken a nose-dive recently. A real shame as the beer here used to be the best for miles around.

Just how a lovely old rustic village pub should be. Long may it continue, trapped in a time-warp.

Brilliant english ale house, good food, lively when events and bands are on. Friendly staff and the favourite with villagers. Perfect.

Word of warning, the coppers sit outside some nights waiting for people to leave as it is out of the way it appears some people are tempted to drive the short trip home. No parking as far as I can see anyway, on the road never seems to be a problem

Top quality traditional pub. Beer and food superb + Addlestones cider make this probably the best pub around. Traditional snacks such as jars of cockles, pickled eggs, and a dish of nuts from the sweet jars behind the bar add to the homely atmosphere sadly lacking in most other inns in the area.

What a cracking, traditional English pub. Creeper clad this inviting pub is clean and welcoming with a friendly atmosphere and well kept ales. Scrubbed wood flooring with furniture to match is enhanced by an open fire - nice to have when walking on a classic but chilly autumn day.

Ales on tap were Fullers London Pride, Adnams Southwold Bitter, Skinners Betty Stogs Bitter and Hammerpot Madgwick Gold. Both the Betty Stogs and Madgwick were on good form (and this was soon after Sunday lunchtime opening).

A new entry for the 2010 GBG and well deserved. We will return asap.

An attractive and popular creeper clad pub in a quiet Sussex village street.Bare boards and rustic tables, with an open fire at one end.A room at the back was laid up for dining, and theres a garden, which we didnt frequent.
We were first in on a Saturday evening-the pub rapidly filled up .The usual suspect-Adnams Bitter and Fuller Smith and Turners London Pride served by Beer Engine together with a varying selection of beers from micros. I spotted pump clips from amongst others WJ King. Last night featured HPA form Hammerpott and Pompey Royal, currently brewed by Oakleaf. Unfortunately this ran out before I could try it, and was replaced by Youngs Special, which no longer does much for me. The Hammerpott was one of those understudy Golden Ales-rather one dimensional; a bit earthy. Perfectly good, but earlier wed been to the Amberley Beer Fest, where Id had glasses of Roosters Hedgehog and Dark Star Limeburners :these are first division, and not real ale for lager drinkers.
The food was good , but not exceptional, service cheerful and efficient. An amiable terrier wandered round the bar, but our dogs were tired out after the beer fest, and elected to stay in the comfort of the car.
Wed come back if in the area. 7/10

What a brilliant pub. Lovely village setting, old board floor, I bet nothing has changed in decades.
Had a couple of pints of Harveys with my dog, who was made very welcome by staff, customers and the two resident terriers.

Will definitely pop in next time I'm in the area and suggest that all country pub lovers do the same.

Great stuff.

Many of the local pubs in the Pulborough and West Chiltington areas could learn a lesson or two from the Rising Sun .It seems to do a good trade and many of the others dont and are dreary by comp .

Lovely pub, pretty remote, although the last three times I've visited the atmosphere has been good but not brilliant - difficult to put a finger on what wasn't quite there.

Anyway, worth a visit.

Can wholeheartedly endorse the previous comments.

I used to go there regularly with my old cycling club in the 80's and 90's and it has hardly changed since then upon revisiting while working back in the area. Beer and food consistently good and a very relaxed pub to have a pint in.

Harveys pops up now and again - which is more than welcome particularly since the 'demise' of King & Barnes.

This is what every pub should aspire to be like.

Great food, great beer (London Pride & Youngs are the permanent ales with normally 2 or 3 guest beers alongside them - Betty Stogs puts in a regular appearance and is my personal favourite).

Lovely beer garden / patio and at the other end of the calendar a couple of roaring open fires in the winter.

Not a "locals pub" unlike some country pubs - you will get the same excellent service that the locals get!

I've been to a lot of pubs in Sussex and I've yet to find one as excellent as The Rising Sun in Nutbourne.

Lovely place. Has a touch of magic about it. Atmospheric. How does a village with about 6 houses get so busy

Great chilled atmosphere. Back garden, kids room with table football and the best homemade burgers!
