Iffley is a village-like setting on the outskirts of Oxford. The Prince of Wales has very much the feel of an upmarket village pub. Plenty of families were enjoying Sunday lunches. It's a Wadworth house and 4 of the real ales were their own - 6X, IPA, Swordfish & Bishop's Tipple. Greene King London Glory was a guest. Couldn't have a beer here as I was driving. I opted for a juice, which was an eye-watering £3.35. Maybe the food is cheap and they get you with the drinks. Either way, I'm not sure I could afford to drink here regularly.

My boyfriend and I went out for a lovely walk in the sunshine and on the spot, decided to have a drink in the garden of this pub. I went to order one glass of wine and one orange and lemonade. Before ordering, I thought I better just check that I could pay by card and asked politely. The bar tender said yes if its over £10 and he said if I bought two drinks, that would take it to £10. I wasn’t sure if he was joking because that sounded a little steep for a village pub which, being completely honest, did not appear to be anything special. He then started saying strange things like ‘What do you expect, this is The Prince of Wales Ma’ Darlin. Two drinks here will cost you £10. I swear, I thought he was pulling my leg. So I asked him how much a glass of wine would cost and he told me £6.70. Again, I thought he was joking. £6.70 in a run of the mill village pub in the outskirts of Oxford – I just couldn’t see the justification for this price. I would at least expect the service to live up to the price tag anyway! When he saw I was taken a-back, he suggested I go to Wetherspoons and that it was people like me who were responsible for 26 pubs a week closing. I truly do not know what I did to deserve this. The issue of local pubs closing is something close to my heart so I took offence to this and do not agree with his conclusion. Again he reminded me that ‘This was the Prince of Wales’ and that it was a ‘Five star pub’. Bravely, I said that I didn’t care what type of pub it was and said I would rather leave. To that he told me to ‘go to wetherspoons’.
I don’t know if he was just having a very bad day but I feel strongly that it is totally unacceptable for anyone to speak so badly to a customer, particularly where it’s uncalled for. I will never return to this pub and I would be worried about anyone I know or anyone on here going which is the sole reason for taking the effort to register and post this comment.

Another winner in Iffley after the Isis Farm House and the range of Wadworth's beers was exemplary. The atmosphere was local and friendly and the pub quiz is apparently a good 'un. It's within suburban Oxford but retains the feel of the village pub it once was.

Busy with diners when I visited this Friday lunchtime, but struck me as a pub that serves food rather than a 'food pub'. Nice pint of Elgood's Golden Newt and good selection of bar snacks. Friendly barman and nice ambience all round. Would definitely make an effort to visit one summer weekend.

Particularly friendly suburban local, with notably engaging 3 and 5 year-olds for company ! (Children often make better company than adults). Wadworths 6X was OK; never good in halves.

This is a great pub - my only problem is the Wadworth beer which I am not a fan of. However, the wine and the food and the good old-fashioned hospitality are all excellent. If more pubs showed the imagination that this one does the world would be a happier place. Makes you weep for all the pubs that have suffered pubco makeovers... 10/10

It has been over a year since my previous review, and I have to say that there has been a considerable increase in the amount of clientele, more importantly this increase has been maintained and constantly growing. No mean feat in our current economic climate and rapid pub closures. Without doubt, this is due to the Herculean efforts of the landlady Lona and the brilliant support of her fantastic staff at all levels and positions. Another factor of the success could be, as one delighted female customer informed Lona and a couple of regulars, "is down to the type of clientele you've cultivated". The Prince continues to organise regular charity FUNdraising events, this coming week for instance, Children in Need, as well as the regular nominated charities. Looking forward to seeing a few regular faces down there, and new faces becoming regular faces!!

We were at the Prince of Wales on my birthday this year - we had gone along to the Isis, but it was a bit dark and gloomy inside, and they only had two items on the menu! I am so glad we went back along to the Prince of Wales. We had had a brilliant day walking in the beautiful Autumnal sunshine into Oxford and back along the river and it continued into the evening courtesy of Lona and her crew of enthusiastic helpers. Thanks everyone, especially for the fireworks!Hilary and Steve Draper.

The Prince of Wales is excellent pub which I frequent whenever I am in Oxford. The staff are friendly, the food excellent and at really good prices, it has a late license, the people are great, and it pulls people far and wide with it's warm welcome. Highly recommended! Lona and Cara have done a great job!

Good portions, plenty of room outside. A very nice wee Scottish lass called Becky worked there. The Landlords niece i think? I will go again for sure.

If you only visit 1 pub in Oxford make sure it's The Prince. I've been using this pub since 1973 on and off, and I have to say that at the present time this is the best it has ever been. All the credit must go to Lona the landlady[who does a 30hr day!] and her current team. Mother and toddler groups Friday mornings, mature persons menu on Thursdays, cribbage/Aunt Sally Wednesday evenings plus darts league. As of 18th Jan 2010 you will even be able to order your favourite newspaper and collect it from the Prince! The pub is always busy but the staff will be able to accomodate requests orders for the excellent, well priced, high quality food, even limited take-aways are available! I cannot praise The Prince and its staff high enough, young and old, rich or poor, single or otherwise, male or female, every-one is made very welcome by all the staff and the freindliest customers you could wish to meet. I value The Prince so highly that I pass upto 6 watering holes on a 3 mile walk, just to get there!
GET YOURSELVES THERE!!

Popped in twice over the last couple of days. Once for a quick pint and to check the place out for a family get together. The pint was great and the way they handled the 12 of us, some pretty hard to please, the next night was excellent. The beer - four Wadworths and a Adnams guest seasonal were all excellent. The food was just what they said it would be good honest pub grub - well above par, well served and very good quality. The Landlady and staff were very helpful and freindly and the locals very freindly.
All in all a really, really good pub - If I lived closer I'd be more than happy to make it my local.

I visited this pub for Sunday lunch and had a chat with the new landlord, a Scottish gentleman who used to run the Bookbinders in Jericho. He said his aim was NOT to be a gastropub, but to serve good beer and good home cooked pub food. I can safely say he succeeded on both counts and look forward to visiting again when I am next in Oxford.

I've drank in the Prince on and off since the 70's, and it's still a great cosy wee pub, full of character, and friendly people. I highly recommend it. 10/10.

Excellent, well kept wadworth beers, and a cosy atmosphere. Rarely so crowded that there's no seats, even on a Saturday night. Much the best pub in the village, with a great appeal to locals and visitors alike.

Great little old-fashioned pub. The 6X was excellent and the food well cooked. Friendly barman too!

GREAT VILLAGE PUB
|
Another Iffley pub that entices me whatever the weather. If I lived close enough it would be one of my locals. Great pub - food's good, beer's great and the staff are friendly.
|
A small welcoming pub in a pretty village with a good value, enticing bar menu and friendly bar staff. Some quality real ales - a much needed resting post when touring the Oxfordhsire countryside. In the winter there are coal fires and mulled wine to warm up those cold fingers and toes.
