Has just been taken over by Joules which is rather worrying as most of my real ale pals do not like their beers which are seldom seen in Wellington. We have been told that there would only be two Joules ales on and the rest would be guest ales but there were four on last week and the Hobsons Mild has disappeared. The Slumbering Monk was on too long and was dire. It is a bit of a walk out of the town centre and at the moment I'm not convinced it is worth it. A full refurbishment is promised and necessary but I have no doubt Joules will fill this pub with their unsightly tin plate tat all over the walls and destroy the ambience forever.

The Cock is situated on a busy junction. It''s a great old pub with lots of character. The main bar has hops on the ceiling. There is another quieter room that presumably acts as the lounge and a more formal restaurant at the rear. The barmaid or landlady was friendly and greeted us by at least informing us that the Kelham Island Pale Rider. It''s nice to have such professionalism when you can go to many places, try ordering a beer and find that it''s not actually on. Ales remaining were Hobson''s Best & Dark Mild, Wood''s Purple Haze, Skinner''s Betty Stogs, Joule''s Blonde & Burton Bridge Porter. The cider was Old Rosie. Best pub in Wellington.

Great pub, great beer; what a proper pub should be. They even had a proper pub dog. I look forward to returning and staying longer.
|
Solid interior, great ale selection, relaxed atmosphere.
It's a place I stumbled upon whenever Telford did well in the cup, and I got dragged here unavoidably, but very much a silver lining to all that.

Fab, went yesterday, great selection of beers, particularly the continential ones. Thoguht the prices were ok
|
went in the pub for the first time in a while although the beer is still good i could not believe the prices charged for it a good 30-40p a pint higher than the local pubs in the area i think it will be a while before i go there again

Excellent pub with 8 real ales and two comfortable rooms. There is also a good selection of bottles Belgium beers. CAMRA pub of the year 2009 for the West Midlands.

OK I now understand what all the fuss is about with this pub. CAMRA Pub of the year etc. Visited for the first time last night and sampled the award winning cask ales. The Rudgate Battle Axe 4.2%, The Ludlow Black Knight 4.5%, The Holdens Special 5.1% and the Holdens Mild were all in great form! The place itself is a proper pub with wooden tables, chairs and benches a nice homely feel with friendly staff and regulars. I will have to make the effort soon to complete my tastings!

Great Beer...Superb service from staff who know their beer! Don't miss the loca pork pie, best for miles around! Perfect Pub!

Despite initial appearances (from the road outside - it looks very ordinary) this pub is truly an excellent place. Always has 7-8 real ales on, most from the county. The staff are very friendly. Newspapers dotted about the place and generally a comfortable and welcoming feel. Reasonable prices for the beer too.
Located on the Holyhead Road (the old A5) near Wellington town centre. Also known as the Old Wrekin Tap. Very, very sound. Worthy of its CAMRA accolades and worth a 10/10 from me here.

7 ales on plus one real cider , had a beer from Ludlow Brewery , very nice , best pub in Wellington by a mile.
|
Six ales on, all reasonably priced. I had Ironbridge Gold and Wye Valley HPA, both superbly kept. An excellent real ale pub well worth making the effort to find.

Thank God for this place. A shining beacon in a town full or dire pubs. Beers on were Hobson's Mild & Bitter of course, plus Sharps Special, Titanic Chocolate & Vanilla stout, Vale Bernwode Forest, Ludlow Gold and Black Rat. Had a Vale, a Mild and a Titanic. All well kept. The mild is 1.96 and the Hobsons Bitter 2.20, compare that with 2.50 for GK IPA at The Wickets along the road. Keep it going guys, you're the only saving grace for occasionally having to stay in Wellington.

Called in last night for the first time. 8 handpumps. one serving real cider(Black Rat). Hobsons Mild & Bitter, 3 from Wylam, 1 from Titanic and 1 from Weetwood. Had a pint of the Wylam Haugh Porter. Very tasty and very smooth. I sat at the bar and was soon engaged in conversation with the chatty barstaff. I then decided to walk into Wellington centre to see what was there. This was a mistake. I should have stayed here. It's by far the best pub in Wellington. I'll be back the next time I'm staying at the Whitehouse, which will be soon.

Just a thought seems that every body who has a problem with this pub seems to want to remain Anonymous is that because they have not developed there social skills or are standing agaist the wall trying to hide the yellow streak running the lengh of there back if you want to critsize something at least make your self known. or maybe you do. One pint and run off home to moan about a pub you don't drink in. see you in the wethersoons cheap beer, tvs, fruit machines, one sad old man sitting at a table for six covered in tomato ketchup and salt and pepper

Top selection of beer and very friendly. Two distinct rooms, each with their own atmosphere. Am not a local, but have been in about five times and have never been disappointed. Have always wanted to stop for "just one more".

Well Where do i start the pub is always busy simply because it is a traditional good old English real Ale pub but now with and added twist. The far end of the pub has been turned into a Belgian beer bar that is an over night success from what i have seen. I use the tradional end of the pub and find the locals a great bunch those that didn't might try talking to them they don't bite. Bar staff very friendly. No tv screens machines or other conversation killers. Just decent people talking to each other from all walks of life in what i feel is a very safe enviroment. No i don't work for the Cock hotel or have anything to do with it other than the fact that i am lucky enough to live within walking distance of it. good beer nice people no trouble and great pork pies what more do you need

Totally disagree! I've always found this pub welcoming and friendly and would reccommend it to anyone.

Used to be the best real ale pub in the area. Now they know they are 'good' so do not bother to try.
Sometimes a bit like: "The League of Gentlemen Arms."
As in: You get stared at by the locals: "This is a local pub for local people" attitude. Oddly enough by 'outsiders' who drink there!
A sad decline of a once great pub.

Don't sit in the wrong seat or you will be turfed out of it by a grumpy local.

Worth a visit. Hobsons best always served along with a good selection of other ales. The pork pies are some of the best in the region.
|
best real ale pub around in telford. no music, no t.v. only noise you hear is that of people talking. long may it continue.
|
Good selection of beers, all good quality. Has a no smoking room. Located close to AFC Telford but the landlord got very upset when a bit of singing started - called the police even though there was absolutely no trouble!
|
Interesting that the person that actually owns the freehold on this pub is the only person to make a comment on the place. Boring selection of safe beers is usually to be found. Pub has failed to gain "cask mark" accreditation

Multi award winning cask ale pub. CAMRA beer guide, Local, county and West Midlands Pub of the Year. 8 handpulls, mild, stout, cider alwayson sale. Standard bitter plus 4 guest beers. Rolls/pork pies the only food.
