Stopped on the way back from holiday - it's a convenient diversion off the A303. Can't comment on the beer as I was driving but the food was very good and the service friendly and efficient. I'd certainly come back and it's an ideal (and far superior) alternative to the the Little Chefs and McDonalds. If that sounds like 'damning with faint praise' it's not meant to be. It's a very decent pub.

With The Ship "gone" and the Butt aiming at the dog trade the George inherits the mantle of being the iconic village pub. But with yet more new leaseholders in there now do they want the challenge? Hall & Woodhouse is a matter of taste - but they should not sell very stale beer and short measures.

New landlords arrived at this pub in October 2009, and have been breathing new life into this lovely 16th century building, with traditional flagstone flooring and good views over the main square. Definitely worth a diversion from the A303. We stayed here overnight and the room was quite reasonable - the bed itself was very comfortable.

Had a pint of H & W Hopping Hare and a coffee for herself. 4-80! Beer was fine, and coffee was pronounced very good. Didn't stop to eat, as I can get ripped off more than ten quid for fish and chips at lots of places, and don't need it here.

A typical small town pub. Lovely looking and there is a good selection of ale but no atmosphere. I have seen more life in a morgue. There is also nothing to do. Tried playing one of the games left on a table but with some of the pieces were missing, it was fruitless. Left after one beer.

Stopped in for a break getting away from a traffic jam on the A303. This pub looked like the best in the centre. Very friendly welcome, with nothing too much trouble. As I was driving, I did not sample the beers, but most of the locals were drinking lager. A dish of "Catch of the Day" (Plaice) was well cooked and presented. I will try to visit when I am not driving.

I visited this pub on 18 July 2007. It is good to read the positive comments here but my experience was not good. I like H & W beer but the lady at the bar was miserable and the short measures were miserable. I do not know if it is normal but the gents toilets were terrible. All the urinals were blocked as was the basin waste. The smell was dreadful, so they could have saved on signage as it was easy to smell where the toilets are. I went to this pub to have lunch, but if the toilets are bad it makes you wonder what the kitchen is like. So, we left and went elsewhere for lunch. I would not recommend a visit until it is well managed and clean.

Stayed 2 nights had a great time. Rob and Jenny were the perfect hosts despite the inn being very busy. Food excellent. An added bonus (for some people)was the apperance of the resident ghost to my wife early on the morning of 6th April 2005 in room 2. (my wife is quite sane and has never experienced anything like this before)
