Visited this pub on a quiet Thursday evening and was very pleasantly surprised. The whole place appeared to have been very carefully renovated in a sympathetic way - there were two fires burning (one open and one enclosed). The staff were friendly and helpful and we enjoyed a couple of pints of Hawkshead Windermere Pale (excellent) and a bar meal. Reasonably priced bar food.
We will visit this place again after a day on the Lakeland Fells.

The King's Head re-opened on July 11th 2011 after being closed for nearly three years and following a complete refurbishment that involved a complete gutting of the interior.
The pub now has a Facebook page on which customers are beginning to register their comments.
Postings include:
"had a meal at the head last night great food recommend the chocolate creme brulee with shortbread fingers !!!!!"
"Vision, creativity, imagination, dogged determination and good old-fashioned hard graft have resulted in the opening of an establishment that would enhance any county in the UK - so very, very pleased for all concerned. Let's hope the 'word on the street' goes viral and you're soon turning folk away!"

The refurbishment of the Kings Head is now nearing completion and the pub will re-open in July 2011 although the precise opening date has not yet been decided. A new management team is currently being appointed to give the pub a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere. This new team has no association with the previous tenant who attracted the poor reviews peviously repoted on this web site.

We went here Friday and Saturday nights, we were a bit scruffy as we were camping.
The beer was good, a couple of locals from Dent and a few others from Lancashire, plus some Green King.
The staff were fine with us, but we just went in and ordered beer, which is what you do in a pub. There was food available in one room, and a pool room with a TV and/or loud music in another. We sat in the middle, which was OK.
Saturday night seemed to be a bit smarter, locals having a cheeky one before going out on the town, but no-one seemed to mind us in the corner.
(by the way Brisk, it's not unusual do leave your card behind the bar when you run up a tab in a pub, I've done it several times. It's not a restaurant, it's a pub).

Attempted to visit this pub for Sunday lunch over the recent bank holiday. Pub looked nice enough from the outside so we parked up and went inside. Not being familiar with the establishment we attempted to have a little look round to see if there was a table available in the adjoining rooms.
A large man in a tight fitting nylon football shirt sitting at the bar then shouted at us in an agressive manner "Can I help you?", indicating that this was anything but his intention. We now undersood this to be the landlord and he followed this statement up with " You can't just go walking in there you know, there might not be a table set up".
He then thrust some menus at us and indicated that we should sit down opposite the bar. Somewhat stunned by his approach to paying customers we did so and discovered that the area smelt strongly of dogs and looked none too clean.
Two of our family members are deaf so we took a moment to explain to them that we weren't staying and then got up again. On seeing us leave he gave us a look of amazement that we should fail to want to take advantage of his stunning lack of hospitality he shouted after us "Suit youself then". We did. We went to the nearby Black Swan and it was lovely.

Visited the pub August Bank Holiday weekend and was empty on the monday evening. Gone with the intention of having a meal. We let the barman know we intended to pay on our card, this resulted in him asking for the card and keeping it behind the bar! This has never happened to me before and thought it highly irregular, to be honest I should have asked for it back straight away. However we drunk our drinks (Dent Aviator- very good) and perused the dirty menu after peeling it off the sticky table. The menu looked good but we didnt want to eat there with my card behind the bar, so promptly supped up and took our custom elsewhere.

We visited this pub on a wet day last October. Unfortunately the main menu was only operative in the evening, however the alld ay breakfast fitted the bill, and the dent ales weree worth searching out. The landlord keennly told us about the local red squirrels, one of which we managed to see, despite the rain.

We are a group of 26 walkers who have visited this pub twice as we have found a local centre which we love to stay at (Tarn Barn - it's fantastic) We will be visiting Tarn again in the very near future but we will never ever return here. In both instances we have been treated like nuisances despite the fact that we spend over 40 each on food and drink. Do not visit this pub unless you are a local as you just will not be welcome. They have a good selection of beers but when sampling them during their 'beer festival' one of our members was unlucky enough to get the first pint from one barrel. It was flat and tasted stale. You could see it wasn't right compared to the later pulled pints but when he tried to take it back after just one moutful as it was off he was told in an extremely nasty manner 'that pint is fine'. eventually they exchanged it but then looked at how much of the pint he had had and gave him a new pint with a few mouthfuls out of it. The food has to be the worst meal most of us have had. In the end we had 2 meals taken off the bill as one lady's sirloin steak was rancid. You could tell by the smell the meat was off but there was no apology or anything, it was just removed from the bill. The lady concerned had to go home early as she was violently ill as she had eaten some of it before realising it wasn't right. Despite the fact that this was a return visit you would have thought they could have extended some sort of welcome to the group but both the landlord and landlady were extremely unfriendly bordering on hostile. Unless you are a local venture here at your peril!

This is a really great pub with a great, CAMRA supportive, landlord named Gary. CAMRA members in the Westmoreland branch really should spread the news more widely about just how good this pub is. The range of beers from local micros is second to none. Usually 5 beers, constantly changing. When I was there last weekend as well as Dent Aviator there was the totally delicious Ice Maiden from the Hart Brewery, Cartford Hotel and similarly fantastic Well Blathered from the Rudgate brewery, York. All well kept and tasting their very best. The landlord takes as much trouble with his beers as his menu and dining room. There is no density of local population to "put this pub on the map" it seems. Its a great pub for walkers too, as either the landlord or his wife regularly offer to taxi people to/from the station which is about 10 mins drive away. So get visiting and give this excellent pub the support it deserves.
