Stopping at the hotel over the road. If you are ever in the area, don't bother with the hotel.
Two pubs right next to each other - this was the best to eat in with a good menu and specials board. I dont think I have ever seen a more effecient landlord either - he was running a very tight ship.
Food was good. Beer was Peroni (soz ale fans, thirsty). The anchor next door was the better drinking pub, but as its not detailed, I cannot add a review :-)

No pun intended, but don't have the fish and chips, unless you want to re-sole your shoes.

Absolutely agree with Colin64. Whilst I empathise with Monkdawallydahonk's comments about kids in pubs, I've never seen any badly behaved ones in the White Horse and in these days of pubs closing down weekly surely it's a good thing that they're brought up to understand and take advantage of what a ( good ) pub represents to a community so that as many as possible remain open for the next generation of ale drinkers ?

We live in Hemel and visit this pub fairly regularly. The barstaff are friendly and the pub is well run by Grenville and Pauline. We always dine here when we visit and that has been mostly Saturday night and Sunday lunchtime and the food is always superb and, in my opinion, better than some up market restaurants. There's always a good fish menu as well. The AK is the best cask ale and a nice smooth well kept pint. Would certainly recommend - one of the best pubs for in eating in the area.

A fairly bog standard family pub with 2 real ales from McMullen (AK & Country Bitter) and little or no character. The place was fairly busy late on a Sunday lunchtime with production line food being delivered to eager diners. But this is not a place I would recommend. Even a few pictures on the walls might add a bit of atmosphere.

First visit to this pub despite living within about a mile for the last 9 and a half years. Firstly the beer - haven't had a pint of McMullen's for donkeys years and so I tried the Country and the AK, both were good though with my bore's hat on I thought the Country too cold. The AK was superb, lovely bitter taste and only 3.7%ABV. The decor is a bit anodyne and tired and the pub lacks atmosphere, the lighting was too bright and it felt like a new pub tacked onto a new estate (Rover's Tye in Colchester - yuk). Didn't eat but the food menu looked interesting with a lot of specials and a fish menu. Visited at around 5.30 on Saturday having had the news of Colchester's last minute defeat at Millwall plus leaving for a 3 week tour of Laos and Vietnam so needed a pint and this was a good one. First comment I made was oh no there's children in the pub, sorry but I'm old fashioned I don't like kids in pubs. Not everything should be family friendly especially pubs and football grounds! 6/10 overall but 9/10 for the beer.

Typical chain pub with standard chain pub food. Nothing wrong with it, but really better suited to a family with children. Very popular for Sunday lunch - get in early!

I am beginning to wonder if I qualify to write for Beer in the Evening, as all my reviews so far relate to midday visits! Anyway, my assessment is along the lines of the other recent contributors; pleasant atmosphere, the AK well worth drinking and at the correct temperature, and a wide selection of food on the menu appropriately priced, efficiently and speedily served, and pleasant to eat. We went in sharp on midday, which I assume would help with the latter. The place was full by 1.15pm on Sunday with families, and the car park overflowing.
Id definitely go back if in the area. Happily I didn't see the McDonald's to which Greshon referred (10 Feb 2008)- perhaps it has got indigestion and gone?

Nice enough building but real ales of any quality note were not in evidence. A good enough selection of other drinks and the staff were friendly and efficient. The place had a bit of a "hotel lobby" type atmosphere but it was fairly quiet so might be better when busier. I amagine the garden in Summer is pretty good too - it's massive, pretty and seems well looked-after.
I don't give ratings by food (beer website an' all) but I ate here too and wasn't that impressed. Standard stodge really.

Well the place could not have been too bad, we went back. The AK is still at the right temperature, and is still kept very well. The food and service is also still very good, in spite of all the tables being occupied. Also with a couple of large Office Christmas groups. A pub well worth taking a look at. Being relatively local, we will probably be back again.

The place has just re-opened after a refurbishment, and jolly nice it looks, too. The ceilings have been painted white, which, with the lighting, has made it a bit too bright for my liking. It is still a McMullens pub serving good food. The AK is kept well and served at about the right temperature. They give "small portion" options for most of the menu, which is good. But after seeing the full sized piece of soggy battered fish, I can only imagine that the small portion is a glorified fish finger.

Michael Brown has long gone, but this is still a nice pub in a nice quiet village. Right near a McDonald's drive-in.

Mcmullens pub serving good food including specials which usually include at least one fish dish. Staff very friendly. Big garden area at the back as well as a patio with covered tables.

Off the beaten track, but worth a visit for the food and some local ales. Herts Beer Guide has it down as a youngsters' pub, but that's not the case (not now, anyway). Well worth checking out
