please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My last report on the Ship inn was back in Oct 2009. I was not overly impressed on that occasion. Since then like many pubs these days I gather it has been through a few different tenents.

As I remarked on before, this pub looks great from the outside. On a warm day after a bit of a hike from Shawford over the hills we were looking forward to a decent pint & a spot of lunch.

There was just one local in the pub eating lunch at the bar. We chatted whilst we waited to be served. After a few n minutes had passed My wife asked if there was a bell to summon the staff as we were gasping for a pint & the local pointed to a large bell at the end of the bar.

I gave it a clang, a mighty impressive ring it gave off as well, which duly summoned the buxom blonde landlady. She fixed me with a withering stare, stating I was speaking to my chef. Now personally if I was running the business I would have prefixed this with 'Sorry to have kept you'.

Still we ordered our beer, 'Morland & a guest ale' both quite decent plus lunch.

I must have riled her as one of my eggs arrived with a broken yolk & the lettuce had certainly seen better days. If I had been serving I would have apologised for the egg & asked if I wanted it changed.

We had definitely got off on the wrong foot. To be fair the rest of the food was good & fairly priced. Plus the beer was in good condition. But to be honest I did not feel at ease in the pub & was quite pleased when we left. I am sure the land lady is a delightful person but it will probably be another 6 years before I try the pub again.

Nice little country pub with a friendly barmaid. It's probably never going to 'set the world alight' but it has got character. It's a tenanted house owned by Greene King, so Suffolk Beers are the 'order of the day'. The menu looked good and reasonably priced. The IPA was in good condition. Situated in a nice village it's worth a 'run out', give it a try.

This pub has been in and out of the Good Pub Guide over the years and, like most pubs, almost everything depends upon the landlord. Situated in a pleasant village which has good views northwards towards Winchester. Large car park and when I called today there were a dozen cars there. Were all the drivers TT I wonder? Because, as I was going to drive after an 8 mile walk, I asked for a non-alcoholic beer. I might have been Oliver Twist because they don't sell any. Any Country pub with a large car park has a duty these days to stock non-alcoholic beer, I think. So I thanked the landlady and went without - and so did she of my custom. A pity because I should have liked to quaff a nice shandy in their sunny beer garden. Not therefore a place I shall rush back to.

Very pleasantly surprised after all the recent poor reviews! This pub has changed hands just in the last couple of months. The current owners are really friendly and served us tasty, fresh and reasonably priced sandwiches -good choice of fillings on crusty bread or baguettes. Being a Sunday, a roast was also on offer - looked really nice but we resisted as we might not have wanted to carry on with our walk! Lovely spot for lunch in brilliant walking country! Please ignore the comments relating to previous landlords and try this pub out! We'll be going back!

We had an interesting lunch here. Although the food was pleasant enough, with a eastern/Caribbean flavour, it just didn't feel right in a country pub in Hampshire. And it did take an age for it to arrive.
Could be an amazing pub with a little more attention to detail. Beer was very good but the coke was expensive and flat. Will return in the summer to try again because overall it was pleasant.

Friendly pub on a weekday lunchtime, basic village local style, Greeneking so usual boring ale selection of speckled hen and ipa, food was affordable 7 baguette but decent fillings and sides, plus interesting mains - suspect the Caribbean influence still on the menu with jerk chicken - less than 10 for a main in general. Huge garden and kiddies climbing/tube/slide arrangement. Looks rougher than it looks for the area, but anywhere else would be a decent rural local- darts and everything. Shame its GreeneKing styled the chain just bores me.

A group of us enjoyed bar snacks in the garden on a recent Thursday. No problems! Decent food, pleasantly and promptly served. The only surprise was how empty the place was, both inside and out. A few summers ago it would have been packed. We enjoyed it!

We were delighted by the position of this pub but horrified by the price of the non-alcoholic drinks. A ginger beer was 2 as was a small bottle of tonic - this made a gin and tonic cost 4.60. Food too was pricey. We won't be returning.

O.K, this pub is a bit like the curates egg, 'Good in Parts'. Our walking party had lunch there last Sunday. We were surprised that even though we had not booked tables were plentyful. To cut to the quick. There is a selection of real ales & they were well keep. The food is slightly overpriced but if it had all been perfect there would not have been a problem. I saw that the chef was West Indian and went for the Caribean Chicken. 'Which was perfect'. Cost 9.85. My wife had the beef which was like leather, I know I tried to chew a bit & I still have real teeth. Even though the pub was not unduely busy it still took 40 mins for the soup course to arrive. So to sum up. Not the pub I knew in the past. The heart has been ripped out as part of the refurbishment. No ambience left. And for goodness sakes don't order the coffee. What a shame as it still looks the business from the outside. My rating a generous 6.5

Had dinner last night and a chat with the manager - there have been a few staff changes but they are working hard to get back to previous standard. Food in restaurant was excellent, beer pretty good.

Used to be a great pub. Went today lunchtime with friends, real ale absolutely undrinkable. Grumpy landlady who argued that it was OK. Didn't stay went to the Brushmakers at Upham, what a contrast!. Real shame that a good pub is sinking fast.

Used to go to this pub a few years ago and it was great. Went back today and it was very different. From previous comments it appears that it is under new management. The food was poor standard pub grub (cold peas and chips with the scampi) and they got our order wrong. The gardens were nice and great for kids although on closer inspection a lot of it has not been well maintained (a wooden footbridge had several slats missing) and was generally in poor repair. Will not be coming back here again - a shame.

The Ship is now open for business again - the phone number has changed to 01962 777756 - open 7 days food available every day.

Well, it's open again now.

I had a pleasant pint there yesterday afternoon.

Went to this pub last night and it was closed up with a sign on the door saying the lease had been rescinded.

Do *NOT* confuse this with THE SHIP INN in winchester;
This pub (The Ship) is in contrast a lovely pub, clean tidy and good food.
Similar names, differant values...
avoid the city one, this is muh better.

Summer Sunday evening, slanting sunshine, lovely garden, fresh sardines on the barbie, friendly staff, happy children, good beer, bliss.

Attractive old style pub with a beer and outside bar. Some good ales available

Great food. Friendly landlord & landlady. Huge garden that does bbq's in summer. Allegedly you can see the Sea on a good day but I suspect you would need to stand on the roof to get sight of it even if you are probably one of the highest points in Hampshire.

The food in the restaurant is really very very good. Atmosphere in the pub is great. The new landlord & lady are very nice. The garden is massive & would be great for kids and there is even a pen for tying up your horse/pony if you chose to ride up there!!

Enormous beer garden which, I suspect, get packed with families in summer weekends.
Good beer & food. Definitely worth hunting down.
