please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Peli is now re-opened. Very little change to its architectural features but some changes to paintwork, ornaments etc and it has maybe lost a little bit of character as a result. Some extra brassware and pottery etc would make a big difference. The restaurant tables /chairs have been replaced with ones that are a bit more rustic and IMHO an improvement. Now serving of up to 6 pints of draught ales that constantly change (with Doom Bar and Wye valley HPA as the consistent regular ales.

Used to love this place. It had the earthy and rugged feel of the castle it overlooks. The setting its in is fantastic and that will always remain, but gone is the down to earth service, the good beer and the passionate management of the place and what we have now is the feel of a pub run by a bunch of hipsters who think they're in Shoreditch. Extortionate prices, badly kept beer and no atmosphere.

furnishings unimpressive , sells it wares on its location with great views outside and the clip clop of horses , but it is expensive , for the prices I would prefer to go to pier 64 in Penarth .

We had a decent enough, rather pricey pint of HPA, and the food others were eating looked pretty good, though those prices too were rather higher than usual pub fare's. As we didn't try it on this occasion I can't say whether that amounted to value for money or not. On a previous occasion however, we had the mussels, and they were very good. The coffee was freshly made for each order (by the usual slightly complex machine).

I found the open log fire fascinating: the fireplace is quite large, and the burning happens atop a considerable pile of ashes which looks like it is only removed once further fires become impossible. You find yourself thinking "yes: why not?".

The relatively few non-dining locals seemed rather quiet, but perhaps they've been led to understand that's expected of them. The place seemed kid-friendly enough, and it was a pleasant change to see quite a few, all happily well-behaved.

Can only assume the management reads its reviews & acts accordingly. Had one of the best-ever Sunday Lunches today. Food delivered promptly & hot, generous portions, good range of vegetables, really tasty, beautifully cooked and staff friendly and keen to help. Would definitely recommend to anyone considering a visit.

Total Disappointment!! Have today visited The Pelican with my family for Sunday Lunch. We thought the service was poor,as we waited nearly an hour for our meal. We thought the meals were totally overpriced @ 13.45 each for just a standard Sunday Lunch,(desserts would have been an extra 5.50 each)but to add insult to injury the beef was tough and over cooked, and the veg was pretty tasteless. We complained to our waitress when she came to clear our table and she apologised and finished clearing. We had no offer of any sort of recompence ie Coffee,Desserts or money off our bill which we were totally disgusted with.We did challenge the waitress and were told they wouldnt be offering us any discount as we ate most of our meals !!! I have worked in various pubs in my younger days and good customer care policy means complaints are taken seriously as a bad experience is often heard about by more people than a good experience. This pub is overcharging for poor quality service, poor quality food and even worse staff who dont take any notice of customers. This pub sounds likes its living on a reputation earned years ago so my advice is dont bother wasting your money here to be dissapointed as we have been. If you are looking for a FANTASTIC SUNDAY LUNCH TRY THE GLOBE INN IN GLAIS,SWANSEA. Well worth every penny.
Sounds like its about time management woke up and smelt the coffee in this establishment.

All Pubs are blessed with their "Regulars" who will see / hear no bad reviews about "Their Local". The Pelican is no exception. All Publicans know this.
It is also their duty to provide a level of service which ensures visitors may return, or at least reccommend the service to others.
The Pelican is blessed with both it's history and geographical position, truly amazing!
Unfortunately, these last two things are the only two on offer.
In my proffessional capacity I have visited the Pelican and left unimpressed.
The Ale is poorly kept, and was tepid and flat on at least two occasions.
The food was indeed "Normal Pub Fare", but was very slow in coming, warm but not hot, soggy salads.
The Ambiance was ZERO. No one looked happy.
One expects to pay a little over the odds, and tip the staff well in such a "Captive Tourist" spot. But the prices were extortionate, the service awfull.
Pub, surroundings, history 10/10
What you pay for 2/10
I would hope this review will encourage the Pelican Management to do something. It may be that you do not care " They are only Tourists"?
Read this and weep / think..............................I would.
End.

Even accepting the price of ale these days, the drinks are a tad expensive. Similarly the food is fairly pricey; however it has to be said it was of extremely good quality. The view of Ogmore castle from the garden as the sun sets is lovely. Children are welcome.

Not sure about some of the more recent comments concerning this pub. Been many times over the years and never had a bad pint or a bad meal.

Prices may appear to be on the high side for "pub fare" particularly when compared to some of the bargain basement "meal deals" being offered elsewhere, but this is justified by the food quality and portion sizes. Meals can be taken in the bar area or the quieter and more formal restaurant, both of which have been recently refurbished.

Another important factor is that staff are always friendly and efficient, even when very busy.

Excellent location opposite Ogmore Castle and the Stepping Stones to Merthyr Mawr, with one of the region's poshest smoking shelters. As an added bonus, the Pelican is easily accessed thanks to the bus route between Bridgend and Llantwit Major.

The comments below don't sound like the same Peli I have patronised for a number of years. This is a pub that thrives on its food sales and the food is consistently good and prepared by a dedicated team in the kitchen. The Sunday Roasts in particular have very generous portions, and beautifully cooked veggies. The number of people eating out here says more than any comments on this website. Look at the photo I posted above a few years ago. The car park is still that full every weekend.
Pubs have to try to be all things to all people these days. The Peli welcomes regulars and visitors alike. It is child, dog , walking boot and riding boot friendly. If you want to eat posh there is a dedicated restaurant area. Some great artists play on Friday and Saturday nights and give it a unique atmosphere. There is some lovely walking (or riding ) country on its doorstep. Give it a go.

I was there when the previous commenter was there. What an obnoxious couple. They had a row between them and took it out on the food. They were rude to the staff too. They were truly awful.

HAVING JUST VISITED THIS PUB WITH MY WIFE WE WERE BOTH DISGUSTED.
lONDON PRIDE WARM ,CLOUDY AND VINEGARY.
ORDERED FRESH GOWER MUSSELS WITH CHIPS AND HOME MADE CRUSTY BREAD AT 13-95
MUSSELS WERE MOSTLY BROKEN UP SHELLS.
CHIPS WERE COLD AND THE HOME MADE CRUSTY BREAD WAS A SOGGY BROWN BREAD ROLL FROM SOME SUPERMARKET.
MY WIFE HAD HOMEMADE BUBBLE AND SQUEAK WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE FROM A MASS CATERER [WHO WAS DELIVERING THERE AT THE TIME]
IT WAS DRENCHED IN BALSAMIC VINEGAR AND INEDIBLE.
i AM IN THE PUB TRADE MYSELF AND i RECOGNISED THAT WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SELL AS HOMEMADE IS IN FACT MICROWAVE STUFF FROM A LOCAL SUPPLIER WHICH NORMALLY SELLS AT ABOUT 6
THIS PLACE IS A TOURIST RIP OFF AND HAS GONE DOWNHILL OVER THE YEARS
GIVE IT A MISS

Went to the Pelican for a drink and Sunday lunch yesterday. Could go into massive detail but will just give you the potted version. Hancocks HB which is normally spot on if kept correctly was poor. Barman struggled to find a clean glass from the shelf. The place hadn't been cleaned properly in months. Have a look in the middle bar area at the firepalce. Covered in months worth of of dust and grime. Sunday raost was ok. Nothing special but at 13.95 each and 4.95 was overpriced by at least 100%. Fairly typical of a seasonal pub that needs to make a killing whaen the sun shines to survive the winter. We won't be going back.

We did not enjoy our visit to this pub due to the poor service. We went with another couple who ordered food at the bar at the same time we did, and all of us gave the same name for the table so it was clear we were eating together. Our friends' meals arrived and were eaten. Our meals arrived approximately half an hour later. When I asked what the reason was for the delay the waitress was extremely rude and told me it was my fault for ordering separately to my friends (even though she knew we were at the same table). A simple apology would have sufficed, instead of an argument about why we were wrong.

The meal sizes were very generous but quite expensive (12 for the Sunday roast I think?). The outside seating is a plus, although the adjacent road has a lot of traffic.

The non-alcoholic drink one of us ordered (pint glass of lemonade) was surprisingly expensive.

Nice food to be had in a nice location, with something on the menu to suit everyone. The bar prices are high enough to stop the place cluttering up with locals ,regulars ,casual drinkers and country walkers. So what you have ,effectively ,is a nice family restaurant themed as a pub. Enjoy your meal.

At first the decor seems andalucian restaurant rather than traditional British country pub!!!. But it works well with the solid wood tables , wooden bar, stone floor and fireplace to give a nice rustic feel to the place.
A well presented, cared for and well run country pub with a good selection of well kept ales, hard working and friendly bar staff and friendly locals. I haven't tried the food but it looks good and I have heared it is good. Quality live music on Friday nights/weekends (provided your musical tastes are eclectic.)A top drawer country pub.

The perfect place to de-stress! Nothing beats a stressful week than a walk along the beach at Ogmore, but rather than drive straight back home, why not call at the Pelican on your way through Ogmore and experience first hand the welcoming atmosphere, excellent food and fantastic selection of beers and wines. If you're there on a Friday evening, chances are you'll be entertained by some of the most talented musicians in the area. I'd definitely recommend it, but if you want to go for Sunday lunch, pick up the phone first to make sure you get a table!

Very old pub which has a nice bunch of regulars. Beer and food wins awards which seems to be a bit of secret, shame. On the coast, and beside 2 rivers, golf course, horse riding across the road and a real fire. All I need is to be snowed in. Perfect.
