Lovely food with a wide choice on the menu. The menu was very good for meat eaters. I'm not so sure about the choice for vegetarians who do not eat cheese or fish. The food was not over cooked so we knew what we were eating. Really tasty lamb and the other dish was calves liver. Equally good! The vegetables could have been cooked for a few minutes longer so they were not quite so al dente. The staff were friendly and gave good service. We have been twice now and look forward to visiting again before the New Year.

What a cracker of a pub, the out side is beautifully cared for, much like the village of Chilmark. As a regular user of the A303, I travel to Cornwall many times a year, the Black Dog is a perfect stop off for me as I live in London, its a great half way point. The new landlord and landlady are very welcoming the interior is fresh clean and cosy. I have eaten here many times for lunch, dinner and sunday roast. I can honesly say that I have not been to a pub where the food has been so plentiful and of such good quality. The menu holds plenty of options for all tastes and the produce is sourced locally at a high quality but at very reasonable prices. As a "foodie" living in london I eating in some of the worlds highest awarded restaurants and pubs, this pub tucked away in Chilmark really holds its own. The beer is kept to an exceptional quality I'm sure Wadworth would like to have all their beers sold at this standard.I would thoroughly recommend the pub and the food, go there, you won't be disappointed.

A lovely looking pub from the outside sat in a lovely village , weve been twice now and oh dear, maybe we should have left it at the once , we went a couple of weeks ago for a sunday lunch and were dissapointed very mediocre, meat was cold and very fatty veg probably hadnt seen boiling water for more than 10 seconds not a good sunday obviously. We then went again last week during the week and again was left totally uninspired to return again. The Beer is wadworths and nothing special Its a real shame as its a quaint little pub
Given it a rating of 2 for location

When entering the Black Dog from the carpark one is immediately prepared for what might lurk within as you are forced to navigate a narrow corridor containing 3 choices: The Ladies, The Gents, or the bar. All three smell the same.

The barman is young and friendly, much younger and more friendly than the beef I found on my plate a short time later. My girlfriend and I ordered a "meat" lasagne (they don't like to be specific) and a roast beef and meandered our way to the dining room, conveniently kept very dark, presumably to help obscure what might arrive on your plate. The lasagne was an oily mass of, well, oil, nondescript meat and 3 layers of pasta one directly on top of the other. The coldslaw garnish was admittedly a classy touch, however. We both agreed on this. My beef looked dug up rather than cooked up, and was accompanied by some greyish matter that after some examination turned out to be a roast potato. Nudging up against this was a generous spoonful of peas, probably harvested some time in the late 1980s before being tinned. They too had turned grey.

We bravely tried to eat what was placed before us, but could not get far. The food would have raised a few disapproving eyebrows in any pub, or even in prison. We managed to get a small discount for our troubles, probably enough for me to go out and buy a few tinned vegetables.

Have wanted to visit this pub for years having passed it approximately every two weeks. Unfortunately we were bitterly disapointed not only was the service surly, but the food was well overpriced and the Jacket Potato cold in the middle (obviously pre-cooked reheated) very little salad and despite having asked for onion not was given. My husbands Baguette was plain, tastless and again very little salad despite being advertised as coming with it. The beer was very expensive compared to other pubs in the area. Another small annoying point was the chap kept my change albeit 10p but its rude to assume it should constitute a tip !! Its a shame but we wont stop here again.

A 15th century coaching Inn on the not too busy B3089 where it is still pleasant to sit out roadside in lovely front garden. Good parking & large beer garden at rear. Small bar plus 2 eating areas, one having an impressive medieval atmosphere. Food is good but Lasagne bar snack a bit pricey at 10-50. 3 real ales, well kept, but tied to Wadworth.

Lovely atmosphere, Enthusiastic new couple; excellent food and restaurant areas. Rather pricy though.

We visited there over Easter. A nice local pub. Food very nice. Enjoyed the table quiz in the pub eventhough we didn't do so well. Many thanks to Alan (Quiz master from Cary Castle) for being so pleasant. We really enjoyed his company.

Feels like a very local crowd but we've always been made welcome on a visit through the region. Convenient to the A303. Great Sunday roast.
