Entered here one weekday lunchtime and it was rather quiet except for what appeared to be a couple of regulars propping up the bar.
This pub has quite a traditional interior with two separate rooms as you enter the main door. There were three pumps, all with something out of the ordinary to offer, and although I cannot recall the name of the ale I sampled I do recall it was pleasant and in good condition.
The pint glass, however, did have some markings on the inside as if it had not been washed properly.
I'd also suggest the pub was uncomfortably quiet during my lunch time visit. Presumably there is a bit more atmosphere of an evening.
Not sure if food is served - no sign of any menus but there was a table with bottles of ketchup etc.
Worth calling in if you're passing, to try the place out.

A real find. Island bar, with three drinking areas, but stlll felt small & intimate. Good range of six varied ales. Recommended

A terribly ordinary and therefore extremely boring establishment, in fact so dull your humble narrator dozed peacefully for half an hour before catching his bus home.
Ales were mostly of the pale variety, i opted for a half of Tiger from Everards and was charged 1-45, OUCH!
Steer clear!!

This is the only place where you can drink greenalls bitter and be pleasantly surprised at how well it can taste if kept well by the bar staff! I'm not a regular but occasionally call in if I miss my bus for a quick half. The food menu always looks enticing but upto now haven't sampled any.

Beer in here is rediculously expensive. My grand parents used to love this place for codgers meals on a Friday dinner time, now I know where my inheritance went!
|
called in last week good pint of 6x. seem a bit pricey by greater manchester pub prices or is it wigan and leigh beer prices are cheap.

Decent boozer this, my Titanic beer was lovely. We were looking for another pub and the landlord was kind enough to help us out. Nice tradtional interior. Solid.

I've transfered my affections from the sadly declining Howcroft to here. I've always found the beer to be first class, the staff friendly and attentive and the atmosphere pleasant, always important in a town center pub.

this is the best pub in the world and i will be seeing them all at Christmas dave from the netherlands

Beer is ridiculously cold, measues are poor & staff are surly. Range of beers in this once fine pub is now nothing special. The Sweet Green is now the best Real Ale pub in Bolton.
|
I cannot believe some of the comments posted about what is probably the best Real Ale pub in Bolton. We visit most Saturday lunchtimes and we have never been greeted with anything but a friendly welcome, superb choice of real ales and brilliant food.

This is not really a pub at all at lunchtimes turning instead to a restaurant with a bar. Drinkers are made to feel most unwelcome at most of the tables because they are occupying space intended for diners. The beers are served far too cold & the range of real ales is not as good as in the past - the Cains mild appears to be no longer available. The food seems to have a good reputation locally but is very ordinary.

On a recent visit the guest ales seemed to be too cold. The pumps had colourful plastic things through which the ale was poured. When the monumental head subsided I had just over 2 thirds of a pint in the glass. Food still excellent.
|
Great pub with ales kept in superb condition - and Cain's Mild always available.
|
Impressive for food and ale. Very smoky, though, and the fact that the Magistrates' Court seems to be next door probably accounted for the presence when I was there of one of those large families of scrotes where great granny was about 40 years older than the youngest brat. The smoking ban, when England & Wales get it, will cure one problem at least.

A proper pub, good beer and food, can be a bit too smokey.
