Decent Hydes pub although I've been in better. Had one called the Retired which was alright. Also had a nice chat with another couple who were participating in this years Mild Magic.

Seen a banner advertising food coming soon. We called in on 11/7/12 for food Very cheap prices and food was actually good. Typical pub menu but good, cheap prices and good portions. Saw a number of cask ales on bar but Unfortunatly didn't try. Would recommend if in stalybridge.

Got to disagree with KitW and sorry you had a bad experience.
The pub has come a long way since its welcome refit and move back to a 'traditional' pub.... serving good (award winning) ale and not a 'shots' bar.
Always a great selection of beers to choose from..(when I have been in).
I don't visit that much, but always have a warm welcome and reception when I do!
I did read this review and was shocked...not the same place I have been in to!
Looking back.... I didn't venture out at all that day because of a football game that was taking place locally. (One pub in the area I believe, was closed down because of trouble...not usual in Stalybridge). The doors were 'open and shut' on a few venues on that day....most of that on 'police advice'.
I don't think you can really base a review on one 'unsual' event.... sorry you had a bad experience that day. I'm sure you would have enjoyed the beer!
I hope the landlord will have the right of reply on this... I do think it was out of his hands that day.
STILL a friendly place with top ale!! Still gets my ten

Very disappointing. Following decent reviews, went here on Friday night. The doors were locked, altough the pub appeared to have a few customers inside. A few smokers were outside a back door - they appeared to have drunk far too much. They were staggering about, and told us there was a "private function" (this was at 6pm on Good Friday)! The barmaid at the next (very hospitable) pub we visited told us that this happened quite regularly. How can pubs that act like this expect custom? They certainly won't be getting mine again in a hurry.

Much-improved by the sounds of things, this street corner boozer has a clean yet traditional feel, with leather seating and traditional wall-mounted furnishings occupying the partially opened-out rooms, which give it quite a bit of character. As noted, 6 handpumps dispense a variety of ales alongsidhe Hydes, I enjoyed a well-kept Ginger Marble. Definitely worth a visit alongside Q and the Buffet Bar.

Absolutely brilliant pub, recently refurbished, now offering 6 cask ales, (Hydes Original is a permanent fixture with 5 constantly changing guests), all kept superbly well. Very friendly staff, spotlessly clean, a great place to relax. This is how pubs in stalybridge should be, definitely a refreshing change to see a pub go back to it's roots, well worth seeking out if you are around, especially as it is less than a five minute walk from the renowned buffet bar.

friendly bar staff friendly locals and a nice pint of thwaites original 6/10

Now refurbished and offering up to six cask ales. The pints I tried yesterday were in tip-top condition. Friendly welcome and a very pleasant, proper pub in Stalybridge. Make the effort to visit when doing the Rail Ale Trail - it's only a couple of minutes from the station.

CORRECTION TO MY PREVIOUS POST!
The White Horse has not been demolished. Appeared to be viewed from the passing train, but it was the building next that has gone. Do not know if the White House is still open though. Was closed when I passed yesterday.
