9 ales on, most priced at £2-10 a pint, the Lancaster Brewery 'Goal-Den' & Grey Hawk 'Golden Aye' were both nice. Staff were efficient and the locals friendly, well worth a visit if in Southport.

An old style 'pub lounge' that is nominally a hotel bar. A bit worn round the edges but does a decent pint (and at £2.10 on this occasion). Worth dropping in to if in town.

Went to Southport for the day, and since Wetherspoons was closed for renovation, carried onto here. Set in the hotel, they charge around £2.30, and had about 6 real ales on. Only a small bar, but very friendly staff, and for me a must visit next time. And the butchers in the not-too distant market does black pudding sausage rolls to die for!

Victoriana style of bar at the side of this town centre hotel which is not far from both the seafront and the station. Good range of beers and I went for the Moorhouses but also tried their "house beer" - Flag & Turret. When I asked the young barmaid who brewed it she looked at the pump clip and replied "Flag & Turret" Oh well never mind it wasn't that good anyway. TV was on showing Scottish football and they serve food. Not a bad place and probably worth a second visit some time. Certainly the best range of ales in town.

Decent choice of cask ales at reasonable prices. Quite dark inside but plenty of seating.
|
A good range of beers at a good price but why do they assume everything has to go through the inevitable sparkler. Northern beers that are designed for this, yes, but not southern beers - it knocks all the flavour and body out of them - its sacrilegous to get a good souythern beer put in front of you like it needs a flake in it. Shame on you CAMRA for supporting any pub that does this

Great pub with a outstanding choice of real ale. i visit as much as i can and enjoy the Southport beers, The staff are always on the ball for me and i have never had a bad pint. The beers on all the time are Moorhouses Pride of Pendle, Flag & Turret, and Tetley Cask. I always look for the local beers, the likes of Southport, Liverpool organic, Bank top, etc... but the ones that come from afar are just as good. Defiantly worth a visit if your going to Southport.

Didn't enjoy my visit, barman blanked me, so went round the corner, but did feel a bit invisible.

Popped in whilst attending CAMRA Southport's Beer Festival at the weekend. Apparently the bar now has new people running it and are only selling national brands (with the exception of Flag & Turret) as apparently they make more money on these. The range included Tetley's, Bombardier and Black Sheep. I think this may be a move which will lose them custom - especially if they leave up all the old pump clips as there is such a contrast. Oh well, there's always the Guest House.

This is one of 2 bars in the hotel and is more geared towards real ale drinkers. The other bar behind it is much larger and has a more American feel. I described Baron's Bar as 'quasi-medieval', with various features such as chandeliers and antlers. My drinking colleague described it as 'God's waiting room' by virtue of the age of its clientele. In fact, much of the seating and layout of the furniture is in keeping with an old peoples' home. Ales on offer during our Saturday morning visit were the house beer Flag & Turret (brewed by Tetleys), Tetleys Cask, Youngs Bitter, Adnams Bitter, Caledonian Deuchars IPA & Shepherd Neame Bishops Finger. We were expecting a more inspiring range than this, given the multitude of old pumpclips on the walls and ceiling. Old Rosie was the cider. I'm prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt. But on this occasion, we left feeling disappointed.

In the other night always excellent beer and bar

Wanted to enjoy a visit to this very pleasant bar having had it recommended to us. Unfortunately, four of us chose four different ales and they were really not to our taste. Just bad luck, I suppose. Maybe next time.

Agree with Paul_ove_walldner's post
Was in here on 07/08/10 and its always a good atmosphere and has an excellent choice of ales and friendly service.
|
Excellent beer range (Moorhouse Black Cat and umpteen guests), bizarre Baronial Hall decor, elderly and genteel customers. Full but tables available in evenings, entrance through front of Scarisbrick Hotel. A must try pub, but do not bother with the other bars in the hotel.

Numerous visits here over the New Year. Good choice of well kept ales.
Service a bit sketchy but not helped by regulars sitting at the bar even when folk are obviously trying to get served, The worst offender was who we think was the Landlord.
Didn't spoil it though and will certainly return.

Great bar and beer that is always in very fine condition, Great place to relax after a day in the office

De jure hotel bar but really it's a pub, and quite a pub at that. Lots of dark wood panelling, old bric-a-brac and leather armchairs mean the place oozes character, and it sports one of the best ranges of real ale in Southport, certainly only rivalled by the Guest House. They do their own house brew, quite palatable, and- ridiculously- this is one of only 2 pubs in Southport where you can currently get the award-winning local Southport Brewery Golden Sands, thanks to the current pubco model. It's worth it as it's a great pint. Other beers come from around the UK, Lancashire beers a speciality but others such as Youngs which is rare in the area. Usually a mild on sale too. Always packed with a mixed clientele for good reason. A must for the real ale fan in Southport.

Great bar - feels like a pub and not a hotel bar. Good beer choice including local ales I hadn't seen elsewhere. A good place for people watching - full of interesting regulars. I'm sure I spotted Elvis.
|
Fantastic choice of beer. Hand pulled cider on too! Love the big chair by the side entrance. I enjoyed the jukebox on my last visit during their recent beer fest.
|
This has long had the best real ale choice in Southport and continues to offer an ever-changing range of excellent local beers and comfortable seating for the somewhat elderly clientele- there are plenty of youth-oriented places hereabouts so what's the prob? Agree with previous poster about the difficulty of getting to the bar when the pub is any more than half-full: this seems to be the only pub in Southport where large, hostile people are actually blocking the bar rather than the front door.
|
Love this place! It is part of the Scarisbrick Arms Hotel. Just go through the main doors & turn left. Once inside it is very gothic. Like being in an old church. Dark with very high ceilings & some throne like chairs. They subscribe to the CAMRA LocAle scheme which means that the real ales are sourced locally reducing the number of 'beer miles'. I actually lost count of the number of beers I tried but I think there were at least 10 real ales plus Erdinger on draught - I didn't manage to sample them all!. They also serve Scampi Fries - a great drinking accompaniment. The only downside are the tossers who insist on drinking their beer at the bar therefore blocking people who want to have a look at the choice of drinks. I really hate those kind of idiots!

Best Real Ale Selection In Southport I reckon it must be,friendly too, just like sitting in a nursing home sitting room though...7/10

Visited this bar several times in our week in Southport. We found many unusual beers, changing every couple of days and generally in good condition. Very popular and sometimes it was hard to get a seat, but we found that sitting with the locals always got them in to chatting mood. The outside seating was ok too, not much, but they can't block the pavement, pity they cannot put tables out on Lord Street like the other pubs. The staff were a bit temperamental though, particularly the East European girls, normally we find them to be pleasant, but not here. Overall though, the second best boozer in Southport, so a good mark from me.
|
Nice selection of real ales in good condition. I visited on Friday evening, and this was a good pub ruined by a noisy jukebox (on freeplay controlled by the bar manager).
|
it was yuk, decided to sit outside in the narrow alleyway, had to "sup up" because the bar man was wanting to tidy the chairs and tables away, it was very early in the evening and still daylight.
|
The bar, part of the Scarisbrick Hotel is in the style of a baronial hall and the decorative woodwork above the bar is from an old church. Decent range of well-kept ales to be enjoyed in some of the most comfortable pub seating in Southport. Beware though, there is a disco in the adjoining bar room at weekends and the noise can be somewhat obtrusive.

The best 'Pride of Pendle' I've tasted !

Must be Southport's premier real ale bar. Excellent selection of beers and superbly kept. never had a bad pint once. Staff are friendly, efficient and very knowledgable about their beers. They have a really good beerfest in May. Allways worth popping in if you are in Southport.
|
Been a real ale mainstay in southport for many years. Still good. Gets a little too busy at the weekends though.
