Took a detour to this pub on a cycle ride from London. Well worth the visit. Interesting selection of ales and the Stilton Ploughmans I ordered was both generous and tasty.

We'd been meaning to visit this pub for ages and finally when we did we found a real gem. The beer was good, but it's the excellent and great value food that made it for us. a 12 oz rump steak with a massive plate of tasty chips, peas, mushrooms and tomatoes just 14.95....nowhere else I know of does it that cheaply even for an 8oz steak! Will definitely go back again to sample more.

Oh my goodness!!! What a find!! This is a great pub, with fantastic food and lovely staff. The menu has something for every one and is very reasonable in price. We were made to feel very welcome, even though they squeezed us in. The garden is great for the kids, and the mixture of locals and people like us, just there for the food was wonderful. We will definatley visit again, and so close to tea pot island, this will be a great day out in the summer!

As I said two years ago: "Every village should have a pub like this - as close to a '10' as I have ever found." Still a great village pub, even if they had run out of guest ales at this weekend's beer festival!

Went here for Sunday lunch. The food and service were very good and there was a really good atmosphere - obviously a locals pub but one in which others were made to feel really welcome. The real fire was a lovely touch and the beams and old china are really pretty.

Top Pub. friendly, relaxed, and there always seems to be someone trying to buy you a beer. What more could you ask for?

The perfect pub, all year round.

Living in Barming it means a drive, well in my case a lift, haha! The garden is superb in the summer, loads to keep the kids entertained, excellent food, good choice of beers and always a very warm welcome. Food is pretty good value, plentiful and tasty. Warm and cosy in the winter.

I really can't see what's special about this pub.The beer wasn't specially good, the food was indifferent, the loos are none too clean, and the prices are high. There was a very nice barmaid, though.

been a enterprise pub for a long time now!, good beer festivals!!

I can understand what earlydrinker is saying. I have just got back from a couple of pints at The Chequers. It was OK. Very disappointing to see it is now an Enterprise Inn, meaning the cask ale selection is very dull. Adnams, London Pride, Harveys Sussex Best and Black Sheep were the usual suspects on my visit. They were alright, although I would hasten to say the Harveys was no-where near as good as it usually is. The garden is lovely though I must say, the pub itself nothing that special though. Incredibly expensive though, I couldn't believe that 2 pints of Best and 1 medium white wine cost nearly 9 quid! Startling. Wouldn't go out of your way.

6 postings in nearly 2 years up till the end of April'07 - then 13 in a single month, all glowing.
What is it that makes me suspect that the 'community' this pub is (rightly) so famous for serving have got together over this one? Could it be that none of the contributors from brianhogg to janpan (inclusive) have posted anything before or since?
Don't get me wrong; it's a good pub, and I've no reason to take issue with any of the foregoing comments - but I couldn't help wondering....

Great pub, quality food and superb beer. And the staff aren't half bad either :)

Terrific pub, would rate 10 if it served Larkins! Good grub, good range of beers, excellent landlord/lady staff & clientele, great ambiance. Also has an interesting range of events throughout the year including a top beer festival. Oh and its pretty!

Fantastic country pub that serves excellent food and beer, service very good and staff very friendly.

A variety of theme nights, quizes and other pub challenges take place throughout the year.

The pub is very pretty and a lot of effort goes into the planting of flowers at the front, which look excellent. Very cosy in the winter with open log fires.

Well worth a visit.

I confess to not having visited this establishment for some time now. However, the foregoing reviwes clearly indicate it hasn't changed since, and I feel it deserves an endorsement from me anyway.
The service was friendly, and the ales, whilst nothing unusual was being served that day, were undoubtedly in excellent nick. Its interior is of the traditional country pub horse-brass school, but from what I could ascertain this appeared to be fairly genuine and does tally with the overall tone of the place.
Yet another corker nestling in the Kentish countryside that needs visiting. I suggest you all take a week off your respective day-jobs and spend it trawling through the county's innumerable licensed gems; you won't regret it (assuming someone else is driving!).

This pub looks stunning in the summer months especially, you can tell alot of time and effort goes into planting all the front up with flowers. If you want a pub that gives good sized food portions and gorgeous home cooked meals- The Chequers IS the place to visit. Kids are welcome, which means you get a rest whilst they play in the garden at the rear of the pub.
janpan - 21 May 2007 22:05
Having visited The Chequers a few times, the home cooked food is excellent! lovely location. We have always been made to feel very welcome, children too.
Garden facilities are great, especially with the childrens play area. Not forgetting-GREAT BEER!

peterputter100 - 21 May 2007 16:48
Fantastic village pub with excellent food and even better beer. Dog friendly and child friendly - large garden with play area, pets corner. Social events organised throughout the year by Charles & Tracey and a number of themed evenings. A really super place to go with (or without) friends for a really enjoyable time.
rosered100 - 15 May 2007 16:37
I have been to the chequers on several occasions with and without the family and have always found the staff to be extremly friendly, The food is always excellent (thanks Charles) the gardens and flowers are wonderful in the spring and everyone there is always very nice. We look forward to visiting many more times its well worth the drive from the coast!
dannyr42 - 13 May 2007 20:07
the food here is great with 'proper portions' coupled with great real ales this is a wonderful local, the best part though is the garden where the kids get knackered !!!
matt999 - 13 May 2007 14:14
The Chequers is probably the best local we've ever had - great beer, food, atmosphere and events. As we now live in France we don't get there as often as we used to, but it's our first port of call when we're back and we get a great welcome from Charles, Tracey and the staff!!
MikeandSusie - 11 May 2007 13:50
Unfortunately, I do not get the chance to visit The Chequers as often as I would like and only wish it was close enough to be my local! Whenever I have visited I have always found a terrific atmosphere, excellent food and service by all staff and you couldn't wish to meet a more hospitable Landlord and Landlady (Charles and Tracey) Just a shame that they support the wrong football team but can't have everything I suppose!!!
SuperLions - 11 May 2007 12:25
Lovely Country Pub serving up all you favourite meals, tried most - cooked to perfection. But more importantly, the beer, 4 reals ales to die for, always in tip top condition. Oh, they sell lager aswell (x2).
Tiger_lad - 11 May 2007 09:15
Being the "only pub in the village" it lives up to all expectations and more.... Great beer, food, staff, and locals a business to be proud of. Will definately be going back again and again and again....
TillySas - 10 May 2007 17:55
The Chequers is a class act. It looks good, Charles and Tracey and all the staff are friendly and welcoming. The beer is well kept with plenty of choice, the food is excellent and plentiful. There are regular events. Worth moving to Laddingford just for the pub and the people.
FridayAndy - 10 May 2007 17:02
I have seen landlords come and go from the chequers ,but c&t have been the best yet.chas keeps probaly the best ale in kent, while tracy keeps it looking pretty.food is never a dissapointment good portions and local produce always served.staff are gorgeous mostly .nice garden to fall over in and plenty of things for the little ones to have adventures on.This is a 11 out 10 life experiance dont die befor sampling it.
tossa - 29 Apr 2007 14:05
It is just a shame this pub is not within walking or should I say staggering distance for me. Good real ale and very friendly satff make this a very pleasant pub.
brianhogg - 27 Apr 2007 14:32
..splendid village pub, pretty, welcoming, great choice of proper, casque-mark beers, great food, esp. the steaks! ..seems to be popular with locals and visitors alike. Judging by the "What's On" board, it keeps the village entertained most weekends!
..as a non-smoker, this pub will be perfect come 1 July!!
deswahriff - 27 Apr 2007 13:30
Every village should have a pub like this - as close to a '10' as I have ever found.
rpadam - 22 Apr 2007 16:05
Really great pub, excellent selection of well kept beer, large beer garden out the back superb food, I'm glad its not my local or I'd be in every night !
chrismm - 19 Mar 2007 08:31
Fantastic community pub which is also very welcoming to everyone else. No jukebox, no pool table, no fruit machine but plenty of good beer (lager also sold) and good food. Plenty of fun events all year round. Well worth a visit
sparklerhater - 9 Jul 2006 23:01
Nice pub, good beer, good food, and very much the heart of the community. Maybe that's the reason I've sometimes found it a bit 'cliquy' ;but the staff are nice, and there are far more positives than negatives about this pub.
earlydrinker - 24 Apr 2006 22:17
Excellent beer festival puton at this pub. Fell upon it when en route to local garden festival at the Hop Farm. Good food, and it is quite a community pub with themed food on certain evenings each week.
