Iv been going in this pub for bout 5yrs now but unfortunately I won't be darkening their doors again due to rarely having anything on the food menu, it used to be a good place to go to catch up with friends but how things have changed over the past few months, the man behind the shower is Dave who was shouting from the rooftops when he aquired the place with promises and talk of his own expertise in public house management, well all I can say (and I'm not the only person who thinks like myself) is what a mess you have made, I think iv seen him 4times in past month and that's wen he appears like hes just rolled out of bed and dosent interact with people unless you play darts. Get a grip on your pub mr Dave and sto holding nites for undisarables. The only good thing about that place is a couple called Laura and Christian who will entertain anyone who walks through the door especially Laura as she is as mad as a box of frogs..well done you two but it's a sinking ship

Nice experience here yesterday stopping in for lunch while my wife and I had our dogs out for a Saturday walk. London Pride was very well kept, and Theaksons Best was also on offer. My ham on granary was nicely presented on a sandwich board with slaw, salad, and chips in accopmaniment. My wife had an absolutely huge fish & chips plate that I was more than happy to assist with. Very nice governor and bar man. Nice quiet beer garden and patio!

Sir Douglas Haig was better known as Earl Haig, the "Butcher of the Somme" and the very epitome of the pantheon of class based incompetent generals of the First World War, responsible for the deaths of so many ill prepared men, despite what modern day apologists might say. However, The Sir Douglas Haig pub at Effingham easily exceeds the pathetic standards of its namesake.
It wasn't busy last Friday lunchtime and the pub is a pretty sizeable place so we rattled around in it a bit, but the staff were very attentive and explained the menu in great detail. "There's the lunch menu" explained our guide, " or you can choose from the pie menu. We also have an a la carte menu, which I have to say that if you don't choose something from you'll be missing a treat".
The lunch menu was standard fare ( fish and chips, etc,) and we didn't like to say that we couldn't even spell a la carte, let alone eat it. But pies...now you're talking ! One Steak and Stilton, one Pork and Something and two Minted Lamb with assortments of potatoes and veg hit the spot nicely. Good pies too, not your usual stew in a bowl with puff pastry on the top.
Beer - London Pride, Adnams Broadside and Lighthouse. All fine and sliped down sufficiently well to give us enough energy to get back to Effingham Junction station.
In addition we were served by an attractive buxom barmaid with much bosom on show and had the additional bonus of seeing on the TV (normally a minus point but on this occasion...) the wretched Andy "I support Anyone But England" Murray lose yet again in the Australian Open tennis.
So, an enjoyable lunchtime was had by all.

Definitely improved since a couple of years ago. The current management have tried hard in doing the place up but due to the structure of the place, it's never going to be easy to make cosy or intimate, but they have done a good job of making it bright and open. . The food menu is not extensive, but a good selection. I've only had a sandwich there recently but it gives you an idea of the place that it came on a breadboard with tortilla chips and a little pot of coleslaw. . The beer's above average price but I've not had a bad pint there in the last couple of years. Staff are friendly and considerate, taking things to my table once when I'd done my knee in and was using a crutch.

We went in here a week ago. We were charged 3.55 for a pint of TEA! Yet at the Windsor Castle (Little Bookham) about five minute's drive away, TEA was 3.15 a pint. Both pints were in tip-top condition but there's nothing special about the Douglas Haig so why is it so expensive? We won't be going there again!!!!

This pub was always a bit dingy has recently been spruced up and is now quite nice. Food was "interesting", fahitas and pies were good but the ploughmans had some strange combination of ingredients. Menu is quite varied and reasonably priced. Beer was good (London Pride + Adnams lighthouse) but pricey, 3.30. Lots of room and seats outside both front and back.

The Sir Douglas Haig - what a difference!!! Went here a couple of years ago and thought "what a dump". Returned again for a group night out ( not my suggestoin) and was pleasantly surprised. Staff were friendly, beer and wine choice was good and the new management who have been there about a year were really friendly and a lovely couple. Food we had was good and the music night was great. Will definately return on a more regular basis.

After many changes in management it is now run by the very competent Sarah and Monty. It's cleaner, tidier, friendlier with good food. Worth a try if you haven't been for a while.

Oh, dear! What has happened? The pub has changed hands, and you can no longer get a pint of good Gale's HSB, the one redeeming feature of the place. The HSB was kept on whilst it was a Fuller's house, but alas, no longer! Went on a Sat evening to watch an England World Cup Qualifier game and the place was like a nursey, with little kids climbing all over the furniture or trying to get darts onto the dart board. Meal was very mediocre, and vegetables stone cold. Never again! We've invested in Setanta Sports now!

I have visited "The Haig" several times over the last few months and need to say , What an improvement. The new landlord took over in April and the place is transformed. as other users have said the new regime has made this pub a true Family establishment. I stayed for just 3 days on my 1st visit in April and was so taken with the convivial atmosphere that I returned with my wife for a week in May. the accomodation is clean and comfortable (ask for Room 3), the beer is kept very well (I would suggest trying the Fullers Honeydew - an organic beer perfect for a summers evening quoff) and the food is extremely good value and well presented. I am informed that a refit of the bar and restaurant is due (perhaps overdue!)but I shall certainly return again soon !

Coming from Reading found the beer really cheap for the South-East. Good family pub, with friendly, well behaved locals. The landlords don't tolerate swearing, which has got to be a bonus. Stayed there a couple of nights. Room was adequate, of a large size and an en-suite bathroom, was comfortable and clean, but don't expect posh hotel style. excellent breakfast.

Really grim lunchtime visit on 9 Feb.2007. After 45 mins wait food had not arrived and I was calmly told it would be another 20 minutes. No apology or explanations. Having a meeting to get to I got my money back (after two minutes fumbling) and left hungry and dejected. Geoff Brandwood

First class, food OK (wife complained about the cheese in the baked spud, but she complains about everything) beer good but dear, being from Yorkshire and used to paying a pound a pint less, if I was in the area again would book them, enjoyed the stay....and the passing out parade at Pirbright..
