Visited last night after work. Greene King pub selling the usual range plus a beer from a local brewery 'Red Cat', the beer was 'Scratcher'. This pub appears to be 'cricket themed'. All in all a pleasant enough place, service was painfully slow, but hey ho. I guess it's worth a visit.

this pub has undergone a huge transformation recently...from being a sticky floored hole to a wonderful place to enjoy and lunch or evening meal. The food is amazing. Really well cooked pub grub with fantastic service. I always feel welcome at the bell. Not a beer drinker but they seemed to have a nice selection i had wine with my most recent meal....not a great choice but had a nice malbec with my burger..! and oh my what a burger!!!
looking forward to the quiz night!

I am amazed at some of the comments about this lovely pub. Three of us had lunch yesterday after a lovely walk in the area surrounding. The food was absolutely excellent and the portions were hearty. Despite the low amount of staff the young barman coped extremely well and provided service in a polite and proffesional manner, and was extremely helpful when asked about directions. The decor was very pleasant as were the locals. The feel of the place overall was very welcoming and i would recommend this area and pub to anyone... great day out.

owner keeps tips to pay staff apparently

I wish i had found this web-site before my wife and i embarked on a visit to The Bell Inn. Looks a lovely pub from the road and surrounded by beautiful countryside. If this pub had some decent staff & food that was half decent it would make a killing. We had a very below average lunch that was luke warm but then hot in other places, microwave i think was the cause and the waitress agreed!! Great location

Lovely pub - clean, well cared for, interesting meorabilia, very nice pint of St.Austells beer. Have to agree with previous comments that the bar service was rather amateurish.

Very poor indeed, visited two summers ago and was very pleasant. Had to send food back as smelt off and they didn't care a bit. We left very quickly when we got off beer, no ice available, tainted wine & no apology. Really Bad and a real shame as it is close to some lovely walks. Stan (Guildford).

Beer range great; Pub Food okay; Bar Staff were none existent and took their time to appear; it also seems that there is a turn-over of Bar Staff indicating that something is going wrong with the Bell that should be looked at before we start to go elsewhere.

Visited on a recommendation and was slightly disappointed. Decor is very nice and love the "cricket themed" touches - staff very pleasant - wine ok, have had better. My overall disappointment was the food. I understand for a small location to have a limited menu but the chef could have made more with the specials board... curry on the main menu and on the specials board???? Something to share other than 4 varieties of Nachos would be advantageous - more meat in your homemade chilli - the salsa sauce tasted like it has been bulked out with ketchup and the "one slice" of chopped up toasted bread and oils for 3.00 was abit over priced, no cream or icecream offered with the warm chocolate brownie and a microwaved sponge pudding with custard didnt float my boat . However - the presentation and overall taste of the food was good and it was nice to see a pub chef take pride in his presentation. Top marks for the chutney that accompanies the pate - and your toasted brie muffin is lovely and well worth paying you another visit!

Oh dear - it was so good too. Bad barman. Bad language. Bad food. BAD, BAD Beer. No apology. perhaps it was a one off but I'll think twyce before returning to this pub.

Sister pub to the Fullflood Arms which we had visited earlier. This one had a similar community feel, but a far more comfortable atmosphere. Westgate Flanker's Tackle, Holdens Golden Glow and Greene King IPA were all available. But there was no real cider. Had a good mixture of people, both young and old. The beer and cider was better in the Fullflood. But this one had a nicer feel. So my scores for both will be similar.

Update to previous relatively negative review of 12 June 2008. Selection of beers has improved. Pub now has a much cosier, friendly feel with better food selection. Great fire too. I'll be back!

If you want somewhere to go for a fantastic, home cooked lunch - The Bell Inn is the place.
The sarnies are to die for and the specials board it well worth an explore.
The real open fire in the public bar is lovely for these chilly evenings.

I have to say a very nice pub to visit - ( i am a competing landlord) but definitely can't complain if people visited this pub. The staff and owners are friendly and the food served if a very high standard. One to visit.

Improved drastically since the new landlord took over in July. Food is hearty and good value. New range of hand pulled beers which seem to change regularly (three were on at time of visit - Green King IPA, Everards Tiger, and Everards Sunchaser). Look out for the old Cricket Scoring Pavillion in the Garden - it even has the scoring mechanism intact!

1st visit today and I can understand the previous comment about pine furniture. However, I quite liked the pub. OK it was greedy king but there was a guest on and the cricketing memorabilia was nice to see.
Not sure if it's worth a trip outside of central Winch but if you're prepared to go the distance I'd say it was worth the stroll.

Recent refurbishment has diminished the character of this pub considerably, particularly the lounge. The old-time locals from nearby St Cross Hospital must be devastated by loss of their cosy, comfy retreat - replaced by nondescript pine furniture. Smoke still gets in your eyes from the (much improved) garden area. Beer is expensive and largely limited to Greene King standards.

If your not a local, you will be asked to leave!
|
I'll go along with Blackcat's comments, the girl who works there has a face like a slapped arse most of the time and the bloke who I assume is the landlord is all over the place. Food's gone way downhill and place is pretty grubby shame it used to be a good Winch pub
|
After the Wykeham, this is probably one of the best pubs in Winchester. Well worth a visit.
|
very unfriendly pub, not willing to accommodate for vegeterians etc, however the garden is lovely and the decor etc is smart and clean.
|
Good locals pub in pleasant residential south of the centre; unexceptional except for quality of Greene King beer - best IPA tasted outside of Essex !

Viited Bell with disbled friend on 3 day break. Good unspoiled pub, friendy staff, friendly customers, real ale, value for money food. So good that we vitisted two lunch times and three evenings. Thanks for hospitality. Recommended.
