Thought it was quaint, typical country pub but somewhat marred by the aftermath.
My friend and I visited on the evening of 13th august 2014. We both had steak and ale pudding with roast potatoes and veg and shared bottle of wine.
I spent most of the night in the bathroom and text my friend at 6.30 in the morning to ask how she was and she'd been up vomiting during the night - never again!!!

nice and cosy and full or charm inside. fantastic beers on tap, a good and interesting selection. the garden was full on a sunny bank holiday afternoon

Being local we have visited this pub a fair few times and i used to wonder why this pub was so quiet except when the sun is shining. Now i know! Beautiful building, good ales, friendly bar staff. However, it must be said, the rudest landlord you have ever met, children are not welcome....but tolerated at times, far too much dog poo in the garden (and we love dogs!!). Thankfully we are spoilt for choice with fabulous pubs around here. If you have a choice the Rose and Crown, the Anglers Retreat, and the Grand Junction are all brilliant pubs with great food and ales, catering for adults, children and dogs. Pubs as pubs should be.

Lovely pub a long way down a quiet road. Despite the photo above there is a building with comfortable rooms and a good selection of esoteric beers. Quiet on a Saturday night, but Marsworth is hardly twinned with Gomorrah.

Still the best beer for miles - hence winning Mid - Chilterns CAMRA pub of the year 2013. Congratulations the landlord and his excellent team of bar staff. Very well deserved.

Boy were we grateful to finally reach this place after 7 long innless miles from the southern outskirts of Leighton Buzzard (we had been unable to find a pub called the Duke of Wellington supposedly about a mile upstream). The ale range is great and a couple of Brains bitters were on tap on our visit - a plate of fish and chips each was enjoyable and no pub with a bar billiards table can be bad. The village is toothsome too.

I must Agree with most of the reviews, lovely country pub, great beers and a very
good mix of customers,it is indeed dog friendly, but as mentioned before some owners do seem to let there dogs walk around off the lead,I also had a confrontation with an iresponsible owner with an Alsatian, when i commented on his lack off control he used some very colourfull language, some of which I managed to understand (he has a very strange dialect, part country part baffoon) but then confrontation with one Wuffian is a small price to pay for Great beer in a perfect pub.

Great country pub, offering a wide selection of cask ales, very welcoming atmosphere from both hosts and locals who frequent the pub. Very dog friendly, met the most adorable German Shepherd almost as adorable as his owner.

Nice looking pub inside and out beer quality was good with 4 different real ales to chioce from, the only downside was alastian dog that wonders around off the lead anoying me and my yorskshire terrier which was on the lead ,also got agressive when we left.

Been using this pub most weekends for a couple of years now and have to say what an excellent place it is. Good choice of real ales that are always in perfect condition. Friendly, very traditional a great place to go all year round. Shocked to hear it's been omitted from the good beer guide for 2012, this due to no one nominating it. Herts CAMRA members dont no how lucky they are !

Excellent pub tip top beer and a good range that changes regularly.
Good location on the canal and pleasant beer garden.
Food lets it down a bit and the staff are not always exactly enthusiastic but nevertheless the best pub in the village

Best of the three in Marsworth unless you want a wide selection of good home cooked food. Kitchen very limited and not promoted enough. If this could improve it might stear me away from the local competition altogether.

Great building & location, beers good overall a very welcoming pub.

Abteilung isn't joking about banging your head: you really do need to watch out for that low ceiling between the loo and the bar! Good reliable beer and undisturbed reverie from the Withnail like collection of mainly farmer locals (haven't seen that many pond life types there). Low key but courteous service from a very nice couple which is my preference (they're not dealing with the easiest clientele). Beer garden is in the premier division of the pub beer garden league.

It's all good at this pub. great selection of beers regularly updated, good food available, great garden and inside seating, perfect spot after a cycle ride in the chilterns!

finally a pleasant country pub in this fine village!! A delicious London Pride and a good although slightly unenthusiastic service. Lot of locals some of which were obviously of th boating fraternity judging by their attire and general hygiene conditions but friendly non the less. Food menu looked sparse which isnt necessarily a bad thing as they obviously focus on the drinks side of the business. Overall it is a lovely old beamed pub eith alot of character and a beautiful garden. Best pub in the village but not what i would call a super pub by any means

Easter sunshine, watching life from the table at the front of the pub.
Great lunch (local sausages, mash, peas and gravy) and several pints of perfectly conditioned Rebellion's 'Recession Blues'. A lovely place.

Beautiful old building in an attractive corner of the village close to the church, to the right a traditional public bar with a real fire,an area behind that where families can eat and to the left a small snug leading to a comfortable lounge at a higher level . London Pride is always on together with (on our visit) three brews from the Vale Brewery,in Brill.Immediately went on the King Lud,a good golden ale.So good infact that any diversification onto the other ales didnt seem warranted. The public bar is well used by locals, and on sunny days sit outside the pub to the front or in the rear garden.A classic county pub.

A fine pub, low beams with the obligatory 'Duck or Grouse' sign which I didn't read as it was just above (my) head height, taller, I'd have seen it, shorter, I'd have passed under it. Apart from the pain of whacking my head everything else was great, the real ales were fine, location great. We sat outside on a fine sunny day glad that pubs like these exist.

Stopped by with a friend for a couple of lunchtime pints - several beers on offer incl Everards Tiger, Vale VPA.
Generally the place was quiet and beer was in very good condition - no complaints on either count.
Definately worth a visit

Excellent pub by the Grand Union Canal, the beer range was very impressive and all looked in good condition myself and a friend had the Rebellion Mutiny, what a superb pint! dark, rich and satisfying! was a pleasant experience, was great for a couple of well earned pints and a good chat, definitely worth a visit, very traditional inside with wood flooring and a huge double sided fire place in the middle of the bar. great place
Trouty - 16 Jun 2009 12:50
Popped in recently for lunch, but didn't bother to eat as have seen better menus at a road-side cafe, although excellent selection of real ales. Will be returning again for a beer, but unfortunately won't be taking anyone to eat.
Jesus124 - 13 Jun 2009 11:40
Excellent real ales, sometimes as many as 7 on at a weekend, often including lovely local beers from Vale and Rebellion. Normal pub grub, not too dear and good portions - try the home made soups or the ploughmans with home cooked ham. 3 bars and a lovely back garden with the best smoking shelter for miles. Nearly forgot - open fires in the public bar
thewanderer - 16 May 2009 18:09
A perfect village pub. Don't bother with the pubs on the main road in Marsworth, walk 5 mins up the canal and go to the Red Lion. I always stop off here when cycling up and down the canal, and i cannot fault it. Picturesque road, lovely pub, highly recommended

This has been one of my favourite pubs since I first visited it in the 70s. Coming out from London then I thought I was in heaven! Not only is it in an idylic, peaceful setting but it is also a wonderful building. I have visited both from the canal and as someone who is now lucky enough to live locally. I have always found it a very friendly place and have spent many happy hours either sitting outside in the summer or warming myself in front of the fire in the winter. The beer has always been excellent but cannot comment on the food as I have never eaten there. Altogether a real treat!

Superb beer condition and choice.
Brilliant party nights, well promoted.
Fabulous old pub with flag flooring.
Dog friendly, Bonios for sale behind the bar.
Great food too.
Best Bloody Marys in the whole world, excellent for Sunday Lunch!
MelanieStark - 19 Feb 2009 13:38
lovely looking pub in great location. Good ales albeit food has a lot to be desired. When we visited for lunch the place was very quiet with a handful of locals. Give the suet pudding a miss unless you want to give your teeth a workout! The food in general was plain and speaks for itself when no member of staff enquires with you about your meal. Went to the bar a couple of times to comment, but barman was elsewhere.
smithmalloo - 19 Sep 2008 08:01
Ihave always had a pleasant welcome here. The beer is local and always in perfect condition. The multi-award winning Gravitas from Vale Brewery is frequently on offer. Cannot comment about food.

Very nice building, beer good, food average. Great location and the perfect place to stop off on your travels. One word of warning, the pub may be children friendly but the landlord certainly isn't. He is an over-egotistical fool and full of his own self importance!! This used to be a really friendly, welcoming pub, all I can say is my feet will do the talking......"Don't live in a pub if you don't like the sound of people enjoying themselves in it."

Excellent 17th Century Inn just off the canal. Serves lunches and evening meals with excellent, good portion food (evening meals Tues-Sat 6:00pm-9:00pm) with excellent range of ale and a good cider (headache stuff!). Highly recommend it.

Magical pub. A great favourite with the canal community, who know a thing or two about pubs.
Well kept beer, good food, welcoming to people with dogs.

twm_sion_cati - 21 Jul 2006 14:51
Great quality ales, always a local one on offer. Light lunch in peaceful garden with pint made for a idylic English moment.
mally - 26 Mar 2005 00:13
I've always liked this place for a pint or two of first rate ales. There's also the minute saloon bar downstairs with the huge public one next to it, and the very large upstairs eating area. I ate there only once, many years ago, so any report would be irrelevant.
