This place need putting out of it's misery. Grays should be ashamed that this once fine place has been run down to its current state. Go somewhere else.

We have visited this establishment on a number of occasions, each with different reviews. BUT this time was the worse. We were invited to attend a Buffet dinner and disco from 7pm until 12.am. 35 of us. Arriving at 7pm the place was freezing they had not turned the raddiators on. All guest were hanging off the raddiators trying to get warm. 7.30 pm they produced the worst every Buffet I have ever seen. Wet pastery quiche, pasta in tomato sauce, the cheapest Cheese and Ham sandwiches, crisps. a Plate of salad and chicken legs with a congealed barbeque sauce over them, and the cheapest coleslaw they could find. Because we meet each year at this time and have always had a decent meal none of us had eaten. When we left half the food was still there. The drinks were not that match better a soda with ice was £2.50 now because I am the driver most serve that free or for a nominal 50pence. NEVER AGAIN 1 out of 5

Busy on the Saturday afternoon when i visited, not a great pub and does obviously need an injection of something to make it worth visiting.
Really makes the Blue Boar and The Queens stand out as the High St are pretty dire.

Recently taken over by new management, this place will need a lot of work to turn it round. Usually full of chav kids slamming shots, and some old duffers at the end of the bar that don't know what year it is. Redeeming feature is the dance hall behind the main bar, which hosts R & R nights every other Wednesday. Maldon Gold is always good, and probably the cheapest in town bar the Con club.

I was looking for a place to celebrate my 50th birthday, the first weekend of May 2008. Requirements: A pub with accommodation facilities, a decent meal for a party of app. 20, a place with some selection of real ale, situated in a not too big and not too small town, not too far from Stansted, since most of the party of ale lovers from Norway, would arrive there. I ended up booking at The Swan in Maldon which all in all matched fairly well with my requirements. Then I came across the comments about The Swan here in BITE, and I really started to become worried: Dirty dingy hotel, a horrible pub, rude staff - dont go in. Uoh. Was my birthday weekend going to be a sorry experience?
I am very pleased to say that all my worries were ill founded (as Rune has commented below). The party in the Tudor room was a very nice time; the food very nice, the staff did a tremendous job serving us, and the ale was OK. The hotel rooms were nice and clean, and the full English breakfast was perfect. And Maldon was a really nice town. I thank the hostess Claire and her staff for a very nice weekend. I have no problem recommending The Swan Hotel in Maldon.

To celebrate our friend 50 years old birthday 15 Norwegians stayed at The Swan Hotel for three nights. The food for birthday dinner and breakfast was great and the service excellent. Comfortable accommodation. Moderate choice of real ales in the pub, but there were always a London Pride and the summer spirit of Mighty Oaks Maldon Gold to enjoy. They also had a few bottled beers from the local Farmers Ales. Overall a friendly, welcoming and recommendable place right in the centre of the Maldon.

Lively house, decent beer, worth dropping in.

Decent old high street pub. Was very crowded when we arrived on a Saturday lunchtime with a Liverpool/Everton match showing on the television, but we managed to find a quiet corner in the side room with a pool table and dartboard. Three real ales; The Maldon Gold was drinkable if slightly past its best.

What a dirty, dingy hotel. I shouldn't think the hotel room had had a lick of paint for 30yrs and the curtains were held together with dirty! It would have been quieter for us if we'd pitched a tent on the M25 - the road noise was deafening. Chef didn't turn in for breakfast so had to go without! Friendly bar staff, wasted on a dump like that.

hmmmmmm, all the entries below look suspiciously similar and it appears a post I put on here earlier has been removed. Anyway, I've been drinking in Maldon for 15 years and I always avoided this pub. I had the misfortune last year to pop in when my friend was staying in the hotel. This is a truly horrible pub, very DHSS clientele, rubbish pool table, and rude staff. Don't go in.

A very busy pub with a good selection of 'real ales' with Maldon Gold as my favourite. Worth a visit.
