Much as I remember it from my last visit 30 yrs ago - bit of an 80s time warp but cosy enough. Beer limited to Spitfire and good value food. OK

Fairly uninspiring little boozer, tucked away down a side street at the bottom of town. I tried the 'Spitfire' and must admit it was in great condition. As for the pub.....well, it's dark and a bit bland. Reminds me of a London drinking hole!!!

It has been a few years since i've been in Winchester. The Bakers has been always a good place to go for a drink, especially this year for the RGJ reunion, where i caught up with a few friends from years going back. I have to say the two young lads who were both working both friday and saturday nights, plus the older gent (who i persumed to be the landlord) were the Dogs Balls! Very Efficient and courteous, do recommended for any future customer. Will definetly be going back the next time im in town.

An interesting place, stopped for a pint, ale was in good condition. Great experiance and June is a great lass whom i felt welcomed by, will visit agin.

Those that can't get served in the "Gaol House" (Wetherspoons) will be most welcome in the Bakers Arms. Need I say anymore ?

I haven't been to this pub since my student days and quite liked it then as it was out of the way.
We came on karaoke night and had to put up with children and sad middle aged people singing.
After one horrid pint, got out of there quickly.
A good pub if you are very, very drunk to start with.

Had an entertaining afternoon here, watching locals scuffling on the road outside while drinking Stella from their own supplies. If tattooed women with doberman dogs are your thing, come for a pint here.
|
interesting place (?) you could proberly buy ANYTHING from the 'locals' at the bar, as long as you pay in Cash and dont ask ny questions.. Not clean, but not dirty, just OK.
The place to hang out if your under age (outside) or barred from the rising sun it seems... Dodgey Sky too - just dont ask, thy hit first!

An interesting experience - locals are a "lively" bunch.

Local and we still get stared at when we go in for lunch. Probably bcos we look like we own a bath. Lunches are good at 5 or maybe even less. They do one homemade thing a day. They're stingey with the ketchup sachets though so check there's enough before you order chips!
|
Certainly quite local, but certainly didn't find the quality of punter on a par with the Rising Sun!
Old skool interior, quite lively with good music. Could see how this would be a good warm-up pub on a night out.
Fairly limited selection of ales, my Spitfire was alright though but my fellow crawlees Youngs Ordinary was poor in my opinion.
I wasn't too bothered by this place, but Degu was pretty happy so I guess we'll be back...

Have to disagree with some of the comments below as we were made very welcome here on a recent crawl. Full of characters but no sign or hint of trouble on our visit.

First went to this pub as a student 10 years or so ago and my friend and I had lasers trained on us. The atmosphere was borderline menacing. We didn't go back for a decade.
Until...
Decided to re-visit it for only the second time during a pub crawl (sheer desperation at that stage as we trying to get around 30 pubs for a friend's 30th birthday). Place is still weird and the locals not exactly forthcoming but no direct threats of violence, which is progress of sorts I suppose.

Fantastic place. One of the few proper pubs in and around Winchester.
|
Low quality air; some real ales; very much a locals pub for locals in the heart of Winchester (and fear ye who enter who isn't a local!); food is above average; on a par with the Rising Sun further out of Town.

Flying ashtrays, stuffed fish exploding, fat bloke with baseball cap ringing the bell like the start of round two, country and western singing vagrants, hysterical laughter, birds tougher than blokes, cheesy eighties disco, thai brides and lots and lots of lager... what a great night. Not one for the faint hearted but cetainly an experience, if you do well as an apprentice they may let you join the Rising Sun.

Looks nice from the outside but tends to attract an unfavourable crowd. Avoid like the plague friday and saturday nights.
