For reasons born in my misspent youth I have a personal rule to never pass by a pub with "Wellington" in the name, or allusions to the man such as 'Iron Duke", or his most famous battle. So I entered this place and bought a pint of something called Harvest Pale Ale (2.90, and quite nice). Nothing stood out as noteworthy, but I've ticked off another Wello.

Very friendly barmaid who served up a well-kept pint of Bass against a backdrop of pictures of women drinking massive glasses of beer. Tried to enjoy the eclectic mix of music (from the Small Faces to Arcade Fire) but struggled to hear it above the racket created by half a dozen Geordies talking shite about football. Stayed for a while but never found out who sits in in the very low chair.

The Duke has been recently refurbished and given a good clean. The beer is ok, but they need to make the supply more consistent. Sometimes there's four beers on othertimes none.
Had three different managers last year. It's not the manager, it's the pub. It stinks. Beer is very good as is the choice, but the place needs a little love. Close it for week; clean it; paint (then clean it again); make the toilet usable; clean the cellar.
The current barmaid, btw, is seriously hot.
Very friendly pub, beer maybe not the best but nothing to complain about either.
Still smells. Good choice of well-kept beers; good staff.
Traditional city pub, a short distance away from the main streets so not too crowded. A reasonable selection of real ales, including the renowned Workie Ticket from the Mordue Brewery at Wallsend. Not one of the city's 'must visit' pubs, but well worth a stop if you have the time.
Much better under new management, and beer quality and choice are improved. The smell seems to have gone, too.
Variety of well-served real ales with knowledgeable staff to serve. Toilets still stink though!!
a good pint and friendly staff but the toilets stink
Fairly standard traditional boozer in the T & J Bernard style. Sells several guest ales but most of these are from the large regionals or the national brewers. They give away free nibbles at the bar around 17.30 weekdays which is a nice touch. It's an OK place without ever really excelling in my opinion.
Late comment from August. Enjoyed a well served Brewsters beer from friendly staff here.
I quite like the place. Decent pint and staff are sound. Normally quite busy with a canny atmosphere.
This place stinks. Not the beer - there's still a decent range, despite what one correspondent thinks, not the staff, who have never been less than friendly and have to put up with the occasional lunatic; the place itself stinks. Is it the toilets? Is it dampness? Is it the sewage pipes underneath the street? If this place was a restaurant, it would've been closed by the health inspectors long ago. For God's sake do something about it before you get shut down.
Somehow felt a bit spartan when I popped in during a city centre crawl. Adequate, but plenty better.
Sadly the Duke has gone off the boil for real alers! Now concentrates on the main national brews with few guests. Still a good pub as the beer is kept well, but lack of choice marks it down for me.
An oasis in the middle of newcastle and the only real pub I have found in the city centre on several visits to the city. Six hand pulls on, all excellent, and whilst visiting two were changed over making 8 different but well kept ales all of which just had to be tried and al were enjoyed.
This used to be the only real ale haven in Newcastle and it still sells a good range. A decent little boozer.
Excellent pub, very quiet on Sunday afternoon, six real ales on, never been before but will go back again.
Nice Pint Of Deuchars IPA 2 be had, 7/10
There's definitely a leak in the gents. What a bloody disgrace. If it had been a restaurant, it would've been closed down - yet, alarmingly, they sell food!!

Great beers. Got to be the smelliest pub in town, however. Don't know whether there's a leak in the toilet or it's dampness but it hits you as soon as you go in the door. Great jukebox.

Now known as the Duke, it's not as good as it used to be, but it's still a good place to go.
Still a great pub. The food menu has been improved recently and still a good selection of well kept real ales. Well worth a visit.
Not quite as good as it was from a food point of view, but still a great selection of ales, good service, a real good cross section of customers keeps it up there as one of the best "traditional english pubs" in Newcastle.

The duke is a fine pub and serves good clean refreshing pints of ale unlike some of the other pubs mentioned in the pubs near by list. You may pay a few pence more than other pubs but you do know where that extra costis going to

I always seek this pub out of an evening as a place to break the day between work and hotel whenever I am in Newcastle

The Welly is solid and reliable. Good beers, solid grub, and an interesting line in 19C military prints on the walls. Lunchtimes see solicitors and Big Issue sellers rubbing shoulders - evening crowd tends to be transient.

The duke of wellington is a great pub. I went to newcastle with 4 other friends and we didn't find any pub we liked until we found the duke of wellington. You can find very friendly people out there, good beer, good music you can choose your own and very good and friendly bartenders. It was only a pitty of the early closinghour at 11 o'clock.
