Good honest old school town local with public ad lounge bars. Bit rough round the edges but serves a decent Rossendale brew.

Always worth a visit. 10/10.

Not sure if this place has had a recent refit since the last poster visited but I found the pub to be in really good nick. Great range of Rossendale beers on - I had glen top bitter and pitch porter which were both in excellent condition. Very convenient for Hyde FC.

I think Sat 23rd March wasn't the best evening for a couple of old blokes to visit this pub in search of good beer. There was a very loud disco going on. mostly youngsters and a few shell shocked oldsters trying to enjoy the beer. i was surprised at the general tattiness of the place. Beer ok though.

Great pub, lovely building and a perfect pint of Rossendale Pitch Porter, 7/10

Called into The Sportsman last night for a pint. Tried the Pennine Brewery Rossendale Ale and Hambleton Bitter along with Thwaites Wainwright. All were superb and in great condition. This is one of the two best pubs in Hyde, the other being The Cheshire Ring.
Traditional pub, stocking ales by the Pennine brewery, two of which were drank. The Porter was spot on, the Pale Ale acceptable, at fairish prices.
Although the interior is old fashioned and quite interesting (check out the beer posters), the atmosphere was a bit flat, wrong time of day perhaps?

I really like this pub which serves belting beer and has a gorgeous smelling restaurant upstairs. Things to go for Pitch Porter (House beer) dark and lovely Black Cat Mild made by Moorhouses Or even better a pint of both mixed together as 'Pitch Black'

I love this pub, its wacky characters, excitable cuban staff, there's always something going on, the beers are usually fine-try the recent new beer, HALO, named after the modern illuminated monument high above the brewery in Haslingden. If you can catch Geoff the landlord, introduce yourself as he is something of a character himself.

I was only in this pub briefly but its clearly a top-notch place. loads of hand pumps and a great range of ales. i tried the 'railway sleeper' which was excellent and under 2 quid! wetherspoons prices. very helpful bar staff, everything you could want in a pub i reckon.

The Sportsman Is the best Pub In Hyde, The Beers and Drinks are really cheap and very good quality too! The food is delicious, bar staff very friendly and welcoming....you must visit this Pub!
Good selection of well kept ales from the Pennine (formerly Porters) brewery range and up to two guests. Real Cider also available. Good prices, clean & friendly taditional boozer. Free wi-fi and interesting bar snack menu (Cuban tapas).

Just visited this pub for the first time since its reopening. Very impressive, its been refurbished which has improved the surroundings, the staff are very friendly, a good variety of real ales, all the ones i tried were bang in form. Theres cuban cusine served there now by way of bar food and an upstairs restauraunt, i didnt try the food but it looked really good, am planning to go back and try it. A superb pub highlighted by the amount of people present, also the ales are really well priced from 1.70 to 2.20. Get down there and support it a gem.

The Sportsman has been recently refurbished but without loosing any of its character or innate charm. Now serves virtually the full range of Pennine ales - which are very good and well worth trying. Also, still serves Black Cat mild one of my personal favourites!!
Great quality ale and good choice. The Moorhouse's Black Cat is superb and excellent value - and served in 24 fl oz oversize glasses. Cannot fault this place.
Good quality real ales I usually have the Plassey,s which is well priced.Well worth a visit.
A long-standing real ale bastion in Hyde. Top quality beer in a unique pub, with some memorable decor! Regular Plassey ales and Moorhouses Black Cat, plus excellent guest ales as well. Smashing!!
Has Sky sports, a pool table and great beers. What more could I ask?
Old fashioned two-bar locals' pub on a main road. a rather spartan public bar to the right and a larger more comfortable bar, slightly shabby but with a certain charm, to the left. Good selection of 5 or 6 ales, my pint of Landlord was perfect.
fave pub, better than cheshire ring 4 atmosphere, equally good beer. If they did a nearby Bike 'n' Hound style thurs night promo, it'd be even better, just the best and that's WITH the current bar staff I mean. Have I swore here, don't think so.
They keep a good pint and the pub is how you'd imagine a pub looked 30 years ago. You have to wonder if thats a good thing or not, seems a wasted oppurtunity...
Well kept range of around six real ales including Plassey Bitter and Pictish Brewers Gold. Well worth a visit.
