user reviews of the Davenport Arms, Woodford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited the Davenport Arms last night to meet two friends who had cycled there, first sat out in the garden and then moved inside. When we got up to leave at 11.35pm (and we weren't the last to leave) the door to the toilets had been locked and the barman refused to allow access. I couldn't believe it in this day and age. Would be very reluctant to visit this pub again and will not recommend.

I am pleased kevin ward and his family had a pleasant experience with polite staff. It just shows how staff vary from one day to the next. I hope though that when he definitely returns , he doesn't get the same staff that C Moore and family , and my family and I got on our visit, because it will leave a very taste in his mouth if he does.

I found the last 2 reviews amazing !!! Went today with my wife and in-laws and all of us had a lovely meal. The steak and kidney in gravy, with mash and veg was to die for,and my wifes fish and chips were also superb, and the portions were very generous indeed. The young girl who served us was very polite, and the bar staff also polite and helpful, despite it being busy. All in all a very pleasant visit, and we shall return in the near future

I must admit I have to agree with ccmoore in his review regarding the manners and attitude of the staff .

I took my husband and son for there for sunday lunch ONCE for my husband 's birthday and was astonished at the rudeness of the waiting on staff .

I asked what was the soup of the day only to be told ''how do you expect me to know .'' !!!!!!!!! I don;t think my question was unreasonable when faced the general term ''soup of the day'' . I asked what meat was on the sunday roast only to be snapped at . ''Questions questions ..I suppose you want me to find that out too .''

Well yes basically ..I do .

My only consolation in being faced with paying for such rudeness , is that I have NEVER been back and have told people about the level of rudeness here , which is obviously losing it a significant amount of takings . Their own fault .

As a group of 6 people who have visited this pub on Christmas Eve and other occasions over the last 20 years for lunches and to enjoy the atmosphere, we have decided today this will be our last visit.
Due to poor service and inedible food (raw meat and I dont mean rare)
when returning the food and asking for it to be cooked further, the attitude of the staff was one of couldn't be bothered. When reminding the staff that the food still had not come back from the kitchen we were accused of already eating it. At this point two of the party still had not received their meals and I asked for a refund for my meal. mine was not the only meal to be returned
The land lady needs to look hard at the attitude of staff and the customer service, their job is to cook food to the requirements of the customer and not pass comments like "we dont cremate food here" when asked for well done. Maybe an apology would have been appropriate rather than a refund but unfortunately was not received.

I can see why some people find it a bit up-market but it is genuinely welcoming to all-comers - try sitting in the tap room to the left of the main entrance.

An excellent all-round pub of great character with good beer and food.

You get the best pint of Robinsons in the area from here. I don't frequent it very often but always enjoy it when I do.

I met friends here the other night on an overnight visit (I've met them here a couple of times before, too) and my experience is of a completely different pub to the one described here. I'm surprised the comments here aren't more positive. It's very picturesque, nice, cosy interior, clientele and bar staff pleasant enough; certainly no hint of snobbery or cliquiness, and a good selection of Robinsons beers (including both dark and light milds) in excellent condition. Live Irish music going on in the other bar. What's the problem?

I had heard a lot about this pub but was bitterly disappointed. I would not say it is a pub, as much as a private members' club. Seems to be rather cliquey and largely frequented by the local 'old guys in-crowd'. No place to sit, and some odd stares. Those who like it, think it's the best thing ever - they're wearing their beer goggles.

bit of a la-di-dah joint, where if you go to the bar with a fiver in hand, the person next to you will have a tenner in hand just to be better.
(But you get a decent pint though)

I haven't stayed at this pub myself, but my Father did in the early 1960s. He recently told me about his experience. It was rather spooky to say the least! He booked into a room for the night and at first everything seemed fine, however after undressing and putting his suit up to hang in a cupboard and then getting into bed, he was aware of a distinct feeling of uneasiness! He couldn't understand it but knew it had something to do with the cupboard. Eventually he read a book for twenty minutes, simply to relax, then turned the light out. He tried to get to sleep but was now much more aware of the feeling of uneasiness and that the cupboard wasn't right! He turned the light on and went to see if there was anything inside, but all he found were his clothes. He felt very reticent about turning the light off again, but couldn't explain why. He failed to get any sleep at all, and became quite obsessed with the cupboard. In the breakfast room the next morning the landlord came over and specifically asked my Father, out of several guests, if he had had a good night's sleep? My Father then recounted what he had experienced, saying he felt a bit silly admitting such a thing. The landlord's response sent a chill down my Father's spine! He said he had thought of warning my Father about the room and in particular the cupboard, when he had booked in, saying three people out of four experience exactly the same thing! He went on to explain that in an earlier century a maid had been murdered and her body placed in the cupboard by the perpertrator. Apparently it had remained their for some considerable time!

it is a family run pub with excellent food, a great atmosphere, and brilliant garden to rear, looking onto the beautiful countryside! a warm welcome awaits!

Family run pub locally known as the 'Thief's Neck'. Brilliant outside drinking area for the occasional sunny day. Well kept Robinsons beers and lunchtime food.
