user reviews of the Railway, Stockport

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Railway was the furthest east I ventured in Stockport. It looks very grotty from the outside. But inside is a fine drinkers' boozer with a great selection of ales and a real cider. The barmaid seemed to know her beers, which was encouraging. Ales were Acorn Barnsley Bitter, Phoenix Arizona, Dunham Massey Chocolate Cherry & Dunham Porter, Outstanding Blond & Ultra Pale, Salopian Oracle, Thornbridge Jaipur, Kelham Island Pale Rider & Pictish Brewer's Gold. The cider was Sheppy's Farmhouse. I would say it is worth the trek from the railway station, if you're in the town. One of several excellent pubs in the town.

A very decent pub this, from the outside it does not look like much but the inside reveals a traditional pub feel, it almost has a bit of a social club feel to it as well. It's one room of a pub with a bar which covers most areas of the room. A decent few ales on when I came in, went for a pint of the Pictish Brewers Gold at 2.40 a pint and was in good form. A very comfortable pub this is and they have a decent bottle selection as well if you fancy a Belgium beer.

Oh and I had no problems with the landlord or landlady both were very friendly.

A pub that's a good distance from the town but worth the trip,if I was doing a session around Stockport I'd make this my first port of call then onto the ardent arms. The beers from this pub seem to mostly be from pennine with a few other local ones thrown in. The bottle selection is very good with Belgium beers being most prominent. Well worth the walk.
Thelittleman - 31 May 2016 14:46
Great traditional style pub. Plenty of choice to suit all tastes. Friendly professional staff.

Strange landlady who is obsessed by her strange husband. The beer quality was very good but the stares from this women as I was talking to her husband were unnerving. A pub that's in a bit of a run down area of stockport. Plus side is it has a bar billiards table but apparently the husband is the best in the area at that.

Excellent range of beers both British and foreign, on my visit there were 12 real ales on hand pump, 9 lagers and 20-30 bottled beers. I went for the Amstel which was very well kept and traditionally served with glass at exactly the correct angle, very good. Unfortunately no draught Guinness so had to settle for the bottled.

Superb real ale pub, impossible to avoid going in if you've been shopping at the adjacent retail park. Good range of bottled beers and ciders. Only down side is they don't allow children. Pretty stupid when well behaved 12 year olds are often far morea greeable than 50 year old's.

A good pub to nip in during shopping trips, though very quiet on this Sunday lunchtime. An ambitious range of beer, and lots of bottles, made me wonder about turnover/quality, though the Penning (?) I had was pretty good. This is my ideas of what a pub should look like, reminding me of the Malt n Hops in Stoke and the Clarendon in Sunderlands. Friendly staff too.
mtaylor40 - 24 Sep 2012 21:06
For me this is my favourite Stockport pub, not as wide a range of real ale as the Crown but is well kept. Plenty of ciders and foreign stuff for those that prefer it.

Report from Stockport night out 31 March 2012: The Railway was our last port of call on the evenings beer tour and was very busy. Thonbridge Jaipur IPA was sampled, which was superb I understand this is now a regular beer at this pub. The pending redevelopment of the nearby shopping area will undoubtedly sweep away The Railway sometime in the future, so enjoy it while you can!
DoctorBarfly - 1 Apr 2012 21:08
went in one Sunday afternoon whilst the wife was shopping. In fact, I would expect a lot of this pub's trade coming in this way.

I've been in the Railway numerous times and can never quite make up my mind as to whether it's brilliant or a bit average.

One one hand, you've got 14 real ales on hand pump and very good value (2.40ish a pint). However, on the other hand, too many times I've had a pretty average pint in there.

Instead of going for quantity, I think they should concentrate on quality. Why not reduce the ales to something more manageable like 6 or 7?

On my last visit, the first pint was cloudy and average. However, the second (Blonde Witch) was superb. The best pint I've drank in many months.

Will the real Railway please stand up?!

Beer poor pub dirty and foul mouthed drinkers not for me

Another pub thats off the beaton track but well worth it. I believe its getting knocked down due to the new sainsburys which is a real shame. But ive heard they have another place in mind which is good news. A great range of real ales and bottle beers. A place that has loads of rail memoribilia due to the name of the pub and the landlord being a train driver. Its the only place ive seen a billiard table apart from a pub ive been to in Hebden Bridge. Lets make a save The Railway campaign.
Caskales - 19 May 2011 16:28
Dirty pub poorly kept beer. Saw a landlord of a local pub order a pint it was given to him cloudy and no it wasnt a wheat beer the landlady seeing the landlord of the nearby pub sat and talked to him and didnt even offer to change the bad pint. I did notice it wasnt drank apart from one mouthful

fallowfield - 14 Mar 2011 11:37
First visit for a couple of years. The ale was good, as usual. However, the pub had an unpleasant, pungent smell and that precluded staying for more than one. A shame.
wobblybob - 14 Mar 2011 09:32
grow up
theguv1 - 12 Mar 2011 16:08
I did find this pub dirty but the nasty comments about the landlady are totaly unnecessary.
caz101 - 12 Mar 2011 15:04
Just been reading some comments on here I too find this pub dirty haven`t been in the Crown but thanks I will now try it
fallowfield - 10 Mar 2011 18:19
The landlady of this pub smells we never go here because it is so dirty.
eveb - 10 Mar 2011 11:35
Dirty

Not having frequented the Railway for nearly three years, i was intrigued to see wether there had been many changes since my last visit, having heard rumours from other local imbibers.

My fears were imaginary though, the pub is exactly the same, a warm and comfortable alehouse with an impressive beer collection. Two Belgian beers were consumed and enjoyed, both at under 3 each. Very good value compared to the excessive prices charged in the centre of Manchester.

Did notice that they weren't stocking the full range of Porter ales. A temporary blip no doubt.
nokegthanks - 17 Feb 2011 16:11
Haven't had a bad pint in here for ages, but it desperately needs a refurb! There is a new sign outside, though, so hopefully a sign of things to come.
f1_mw - 29 Dec 2010 11:00
Rough clientel and very dirty
femalebeerdrinker - 15 Oct 2010 17:24
Called in here for my first time last night, after being reccomended by several people. Was impressed by the variety of the beer on offer. Oldie worldy feel to the place with wooden beams. Next time I visit the place I think I'll go in the afternoon to fully appreciate the place.
realalerules1983 - 9 Oct 2010 16:13

I read somewhere this building was close to being demolished . As a building it would be no great loss. Henceforth I shall comment on the beer.

Incredible choice of up to 16 beers all in good condition from as little as 1.80 a pint with most 2.00 or under. Lots of Pennine beer.

Vibrant interesting crowd- everything from Grandma, hairy bikers, young lads on the pull , visiting Chelsi (sic) fans, bimbos and 2 drunk stockbrokers.Very friendly crowd indeed.

nb for Model railway enthusiasts visiting hoping -to see the train run around the top of the bar - currently experiencing long delays "dust on the tracks"

Go ? Yes! before it is redeveloped

have been in twice in the last couple of months with some mates and we all agree that the ale was a little disappointing. I hope this isn't a trend but it seems that now they have 15 pumps, they have gone for quantity and not quality. Used to be the 2nd best pub in Stockport (behind Crown), now The Magnet has taken over and I fear people will go there and Crown instead.

Please prove me wrong!
juninhocrunch - 25 Feb 2010 18:25
Walked past last night and counted 16 hand pumps! Have they got a festival on or are these now permanent?
juninhocrunch - 20 Oct 2009 11:23
Excellent no-frills pub opposite the retail park. Former outlet for David Porter's excellent beers, now brewed by Rossendale. 10-12 handpumps with a great range of Rossendale beers complemented by imaginative guests. Beers are kept in excellent condition, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable and there's a nice relaxed atmosphere. Top range of continental beers, too.
EFC1878 - 4 Oct 2009 23:12
Excellent little pub. 12 hand pumps 8 on when visited including Pennine ales and pictish ales. Good atmosphere. Many bottled belgian and german beers. A proper free house.
doncaosdelanada - 30 Apr 2009 22:21
I love this pub, and it was probably my first introduction to real ale outside of Robinsons! Also responsible for my liking of Belgian and German beers, I suspect. I was in this weekend though and very disappointed, the atmosphere was nasty, the beer selection was uninspiring and the quality average. What's happened?
f1_mw - 22 Dec 2008 22:34
Best pub of the day and our 2nd on Saturday's Stockport visit. Another fantastic landlord as he opened up at least 10 minutes early for our group. A great selection of beer from the 10 hand pumps. 6 Pennine beers same as Trainman has listed below. The guest ales were Nailmakers Mild, Rudgate Viking, Phoenix Uncle Fester & Acorn Yorkshire Pride. The beers ranged from 1.70 to 2.10 depending on the strength. A bar-billiards table kept two of our group occupied whilst we were there. A bit of a shame that we could not stay longer as we fancied some food at the nearby Arden Arms.
Love_good_ale - 21 Oct 2008 00:28
Single bar pub opposite the Peel Shopping Centre and easily walkable from the town centre.

The pub serves beers from the Porter Brewing Co, a microbrewery from nearby Rossendale.

A splendid bank of handpumps in the L-shaped lounge bar offered a range of 8-9 different Porter Brewery beers when I dropped in last week. My pint of Hameldon Bitter - 1.60p - was a pleasant darkish beer with a slightly bittery taste.

Seemingly unusual for Stockport pubs, there is a wide range of foreign bottled beer offered as well

There are the inevitable railway-themed pictures and photos to admire while you sup your pint.

Well worth seeking out, especially if you fancy something other than Robinsons
JohnBonser - 30 Jul 2008 12:41
Used to be a great pub. Spent many hours and pounds there whilst Paul & Bev, Fleming, Alex then Martin ran it under the Porters name. On my last visit was short changed by 10. The rude and unhelpful landlady and staff refused to check the till and denied till was up the next day. Will not be returning! Use the Crown instead!
LittleFamilyFish - 23 Jul 2008 11:40
What a brilliant pub. My first visit and it was great to get the full range of the Pennine beers on, and all very enjoyable too. I had only ever had one of the old Porter range before so had a great time. Was told it is now safe for 5 years at least.
gillhalfpint - 3 Jul 2008 12:11
Oh Yes!! still the business.Superbly maintained beer, great selection-the lack of attention to non regulars at the bar could do with a tweak-but well worth the visit.
EdgarBriggsMI5 - 2 Aug 2007 01:58
Pub's life has been prolonged another few years, again, which is great news. Astounding choice of ales, and an all-round belting pub.
Carlurmston - 5 Jun 2007 14:23
Great Porter's ales and great value prices. Superb choice of Irish whiskeys - much more than the usual Jameson and Bushmills. Excellent.
wobblybob - 30 Dec 2006 11:48
One of the best pubs in the country. The beer range is astonishing and is always in great condition.
EFC1878 - 3 Dec 2006 11:50
One of the best range of beers in Greater Manchester (they even brew their own Porter's range). The food is reasonably priced. The only draw back that springs to mind is that there are no children allowed, not even in the beer garden.
brewJew - 11 Oct 2006 15:13
Excellent pub serving tasty Porters beers, all at reasonable prices. The pub itself is basic but comfortable, the ideal place for a pint. Food served during the day. Good range of foreign beers, too. All this and bar billiards as well!! This pub is highly recommended - its a shame it will be demolished in the New Year (Feb 2007 or thereabouts) - so try it while you can.
DoctorBarfly - 9 Oct 2006 21:33
Get in this pub before it goes! You will not be sorry.
conductor - 24 Sep 2006 11:09
Excellent pub.It was in doubt that the high standards could be maintained, when the previous incumbent (Alex)left a couple of years ago. However, the beer is still brilliant & the choice of foreign beers, legendary. The Porters own beers are great-the regulars tend to have their own preferences-although the Sunshine is very popular. The prospect of this pub being demolished -for yet another massive soulless supermarket-is still a possibilty......Drink here while you can!
EdgarBriggsMI5 - 6 Aug 2006 12:17
A fantastic selection of ale, foreign beer, irish whiskeys and all at a price YOU can afford. Brilliant beer... One of the best pubs i've had the pleasure of visiting!

This is probably one of the best pubs in Stockport . A traditional pub with a very friendly atmosphere and serving a wide range of real ales brewed by Porters.
windymiller - 20 Jan 2005 09:17
Quiet pub on Portwood opposite the Peel Shopping Centre. Excellent range of beer from Porters of Rossendale, and dozens of interesting foreign bottled beers. Great food too ! A real gem.
