The photo, is surely pre hall and woehouse takeover, when it was a lovely pub; since and now, a horrible dump, badly run by the numerous managers who have passed through, under the appauling rule of h and w.
had a drink there, with a pal, to see any improvement, as bad as ever, awful atmosphere, manager busy viewng a inappropriate video on a laptop on the bar. once llovely beer garden a muddy mess, debris piled in corners

Visited this potentially beautiful pub on a Saturday lunchtime. What a shame that Hall & Woodhouse have acquired this pub too. Sadly the same old list beers on offer.
Badgers, Firkin Fox...urgggh!!!

The 2 of us went here about 2 weeks ago, and although it was nearly as cold in the pub as outside(the log fire hadn't been going long), the landlord and landlady came and spoke to us for about half an hour, they're very friendly. Plentiful food and cooked very well. Good old Badgers beer (I love it!)

This charming family village pub is now re-opened to landord Tim Brooker and landlady Mini Brooker. The food is by far the best in the especially their homemade lasagne and grandma's venison casserole, they also stock a fine collection of Hall & Woodhouse beers. Pay Min and Tim a visit they will make you most welcome and I know you will enjoy the experience

A quaint, small pub. Friendly staff. Well-kept Hall & Woodhouse beer. Nice log fires in both rooms and not averse to muddy boots. A lovely little local.

Good News for The Dragon, we have heard that there has been a new tenant appointed.

there may yet be hope. No change of use planning application as yet.

I was disappointed to see this pub had closed, it may not have been the best pub in the world but it made a good stop off after walking on St Leonards Forest, and its certainly a shame to see any local close down. The reality is Colgate is not a big enough village to support a pub, so it needed to attract outsiders in, which obviously it didnt do well enough. Does anyone know if it has a future under another owner ??

Quafferman you make a very strong statement about the pub don't you. In your terms a dump! Would it surprise you to know that I drank in the pub off & on over the last couple of years and I've drunk in a lot worse than The Dragon.
I wonder when was the last time you actually went in because a lot of us regulars quite liked the old place. Fullbelly may have got the village name wrong but his sentiment is spot-on, I think in all the times I went there I only ever saw two or three people who actually came from Colgate, the rest from elsewhere just came for some good beer and company. In the main I think that you're right about Hall & Woodhouse but they do have some good tenated pubs like The Gate which is a great place for beer and a meal

fullbelly; the pub is in colgate, not faygate.it closed, because it went downhill and was a dump.it was a great pub, in the pre-hall and wwodhouse days; when they take over, it is a death warrant
quafferman - 16 May 2010 14:12
Now closed....people of Faygate hang your heads in shame!!!
If you dont drink in your local pub you cant complain when it shuts down.....

Went here last week with the family for lunch in the beer garden on a sunny Saturday. There were about 8 other customers apart from us, so it was disappointing that a simple food order took 45mins to arrive. And more disappointing that the chicken in the burger was burnt on one side and the bap stale.

kids meals ok, but it's just very average - ok if you're starving, but not where I'd take friends. The Black Swan at Pease Pottage is a much more consistent pub for good food and service - would recommend that over this any day

Popped in today for a pint and a sandwich at lunchtime - my first visit. There were couple of friendly coves in the snug who were more than happy for me to join their conversation, despite my being some 20 years or so their junior.
I then sat out in the garden enjoying the sunshine.
The pub interior is old fashoned but in a "good" way.My H&W "Sussex" bitter was in good nick and the sandwich was okay but I thought for the money that the bread might have been a cut above the supermarket own brand brown sliced that was offered. The person behind the bar was friendly.
I think I'd like to go back and try the cooked food as the menu looked to have some interesting things on it.

enjoyed a great pint of Sussex and a generously sized korma and tikka masala this afternoon, all very good

nice polite staff who gave us a realistic expectation of kitchen waiting time as we'd just arrived at sunday lunchtime peak - met that timescale on the button.

great going considering the fussy beard-wearing sherry drinkers inside that were messing them about

very well kept, enormous gardens, pub standard benches all well spaced apart so you get your own space - got our own corner of the gardens to enjoy the sun

nice secluded Sussex spot for sunny arvo's in the sun, highly reccomended - plenty of room for parking, plenty of room to let kids run around relatively unattended in the gardens

also very tidy and clean smelling loos

I have made another visit to this pub in April 07; the manager at the time has since been given his marching orders, so this is not enttirely up-to date, howver, the place was the worst I have ever seen it, with drunken cronies of the landlord, who seemed to happily tolerate/condone these types, bothering me and fighting among themselves - one went out to vandalise the others motorbike - horrendous experience - I won't be going back, as I'm sure ince these types infest a previously OK pub, they are very hard to eradicate!

Nice enough pub and fantastic locations.

Usual K & B beers - Sussex, Tanglefoot and Badger. My pint of Sussex was excellent and washed down my sizeable portion of chips very nicely.

Strange layout - snug bar on one side (seats about 5 people before you start invading other people's personal space) and the main bar/restaurant on the other side.

Still - probably better in the summer when everyone can spill out into the garden. I will be back to try the food soon.

I used to regularly visit this pub, when it was owned by King & Barnes, when it was a splendid pub.
The takeover by Hall & Woodhouse, has resulted in a succession of landlords; on my last visit, in August 2005, my lager was OK, but my friend's "Tanglefoot", was off.The beer garden is not as tidy or attractive as it used to be.

Love it for long sunday, lazy afternoons..
Grat food, and ales..

Delightful old style country pub under new management. Michael & Justine are wonderful hosts helping the weary traveller to a good selection of beers and spirits. The food menu is extensive and the portions more than generous (no kids' menu). Choose to sit in the Snug Bar or Lounge leading to the large garden at the back...nice. Huge car park to rear a bonus. Increasingly busy, especially on sunny days.
