This pub was fantastic when it was the Tickled Trout and Ian H ran the place (pity he didn't own it)...then it closed and after a while became Trawlers and all the old the pond life from when it was called the Bugle, all moved back in...you are back in a duelling-banjos pub now. I tried in once and agree with anonymous 28/6/06 above....its still exactly like that.

There was a 'fresh fish' van/stall outside 'Trawlers' yesterday, if thats your bag! And Karaoke appears popular here on Friday nights... mmmmmhhh!

Went passed 'Trawlers' today at 6.30pm... it still looks as if its 'closed', there were no cars at all at the front. Maybe the manager could hire some cars from somewhere and make it look like people go there!!

Now called "Trawlers" (as mentioned by eagle-eyed GP) my curiosity got the better of me, and in passing by yesterday I noticed a sign above the front/main entrance "Entrance to Restaurant", so presumably you can get a meal here now. But why you would want to.. is another matter!! Have the 5 bar-huggers been evicted now..!? In which case, it might be worth a visit.
The problem here is location. This pub is right in the middle of no-mans-land! You don't see it because the Upper Halliford Road is a fairly fast road, and nobody stops along there (unless residing or have business nearby) so only minimum passing trade. Unless recommended by word of mouth, regularly, this pub will never pull big crowds. And right now it ain't doing it!
Apparently there are 17 acres at the back of this pub, including an old large trout lake! And a small football pitch with pavillion. Surely a 'good' developer/landlord could make good use of such space??
Well, it hasn't happened yet... or will it..?? TJ

I have been in this pub twice. After going in once I was in no hurry to return, but I like to give things the benefit of the doubt so went back. What a mistake. I've been in some rubbish pubs in my time and have worked in a cliquey pub before, but you walk into this place and the 5 customers look at you as if you've just walked into their living room at home. Some of the chavviest people I've ever seen, look like they'll nick your car should you leave it in the car park. I'd rather stay in than risk this pub again.

I had some good visits in this pub when it was the Tickled Trout, and got 'pickled' on more than one occasion! In 2005 the food was excellent, particularly the fish dishes...but that was 2005 !!
Ian H. was a good bar manager.
Now the place looks 'closed down' from the road, but you can sneak in the left side entrance. If you want a cheap pint. I normally have a 4 minute rule.. if I don't get any eye contact from staff behind the bar, or get served within 4mins of standing at the bar, I usually walk straight out! And thats what I did last time I was in the TT ! And there were only 5 people in the pub at the time!! Serious staff problems. And 2/3 of the ground floor were not being utilised!!
Big Problemo !! (What went wrong Donna..?) TJ

this landlord must be desparate as he's offering free barbeques and 1 a pint most days and nights and on world cup days. This hopefully has attracted all the local cheapskate, lowlife chavs, which will have cleansed other reputable pubs in the area, who don't want those sort of people in their premises anyway

It's not a very welcoming place. Doesn't seem to have much idea if it's trying to be pub or a bar. And the blonde girl behind the bar really needs to lose that attitude.

Now open again and called "Trawlers"

Yep, another winner there methinks:)

Yes. this pub was called The Bugle, back in the day when it was a proper pub. Bit rough in those days, but far better than it is now.

Reopened Friday 7th April 2006 with a busy 1 a pint special.

Mates inform me some of the staff have been kept on.

Still yet to visit. Shall add food comments when I do.

Appears closed - Perhaps they are turning it back into a pub again rather than a faux-reataurant? We can only hope..

Currently Closed undergoing work. Have not been myself yet but work mates praised food.

Lee has now left the Pub. and the food has gone right down and is CRAP. The pub is now averaging 1 fight a month and you take your life in your hands going in their. Shame about the management.

STAFF praise does not COUNT - Let the PUNTERS speak for THEMSELVES.

Having the gents toilet opposite the bar is not a good thing - You can be standing having a drink and get a very unsavoury view/smell

Haven't eaten in here yet though, so will reserve judgement

Warm & welcoming a VERY friendly pub/restaurant that serves EXCELLENT Food, Cooked by LEE. A Good Choice of wines, making avery pleasent night out. However I would recommnd that you BOOK ahead, as you may not get a table.

Love the clean new look and no smoking policy, with excellant friendly service & food - Our company folk will miss this pub when we move to a new location

I agree, have eaten there twice. Good prices, great food and plenty of it.
Richard - 22 Oct 2004 09:39
Totally disagree - love it. Totally non-smoking, clean and friendly. Food is excellent. Only background music when we were in there and prices are average and in line with other local pubs. Would recommend it and have.

Formerly known as The Bugle, which was nothing special, but a perfectly reasonable local pub.

Now has been wrecked by a dodgy refit, now all wooden flooring, uncomfortable seating, radios blaring out white noise and high prices. Avoid like the plague.
