Quality little local.. Good food and staff..
Changed hands recently a while back.. Don't think the posh Gastro pub idea worked out. A bit off the beaten track.

One of the best in the area

I visited The Well after some friends were given some good reviews on The Well. The food was nothing special, and a little pricey for what was served up. Two of our party had the same thing from the menu and only one meal was served with unfeasably large onion rings, and the turkey did not come with cranberry sauce, yorkshire puddings and for 20 could have put out some crackers. The waitreses were the best thing about this place, polite, friendly, looked great and deserved the tip we left.

Paul, Andy and Tony are really making a go of this. This pub is in an awkward location and needs to keep reinventing itself to stay popular. There is much competition around but fortunately the food will win people over. Keep up the good work.

Excellent for breakfast....varied menu with friendly service. The Ascot breakfast was lovely with generous helping of smoked salmon...yum yum!! Jan of Hitchin

This is an incredible place.
We came here on the recommendation of some family members who live locally. I'm quite envious of them being able to visit The Well all the time!
Both the decor and the food were stunning, and we were so pleased to find that the staff genuinely seem to care about the customers. Our waitress and the lady in charge particularly stood out for their charm and friendliness.
Since we didn't have to drive my husband was only too happy to sample every one of the four or five real ales on offer, and I made a similar attempt at the wine list.
We are in the area again for a family event in a few weeks, and we will most certainly make time to visit The Well again. This time I shall make every effort to leave room for a pudding.
Marvellous.

Wonderful place. good food, good service, good beer and pleasant atmosphere.

As somebody who regularly entertains clients in London, Milan, Paris and Amsterdam I can say that the dining experience at The Well is right up there in terms of quality and value for money. There are obviously 'fancier' establishments around but if you want a great meal at a good price - with just the right balance of service - you would be hard pressed to beat The Well.

I am a regular visitor to the Well. I ate in there last night with my husband and a couple of our friends. The night was faultless. I was surprised to see the previous comment, the staff are so nice and helpful and Helen (the Proprietor) would move the earth to make sure people have a good time. It sounds like 17comesunday had a very unfortunate and rare experience at the Well

We visited on 23rd April hoping for Great British fayre for St George's Day only to find that they had cancelled the special evening. However, we stayed for a meal; starters were lovely, but everything fell apart after that. My other half opted for fillet steak without the mash, but the meal came as per the menu. The Head Waiter, instead of taking the plate into the kitchen for re-dressing, gave my partner a plate to transfer the food over!!!! Pudding was no better; we specifically requested a dessert without custard, to be presented with pudding and custard and was asked if this was OK.
On the bill when paying, we noticed that other drinks had been charged to our account, and had to request twice that they be taken off.
The Proprietor came over to ask for our feedback and was truely disappointed with our experience, and reimbursed us accordingly. However, the restaurant does not train its staff effectively in customer service skills. Very disappointing.

The rating does not do this place justice, it's abosolutely wonderful, we come here often and would recommend to all.

Came here on advice. Must admit I was pretty impressed. Thought it was a bit expensive looking at the menu but it was worth it. I had the lamb noisettes, lovely sauce, never tasted anything like it! Felt like pinching the cuttlery, not your normal run of the mill pub, attention to detail is the name of this place. A+

This has to be one of the trendiest pubs around. The decor is really cocktail bar like, really good atmosphere, had a great meal and some nice wine. It turns out that the Cook is the landlady, a really nice person as well, seems to know what people want and really cares about what people think.

Absolutely wonderful. Best food in Hitchin.

Visited here a couple of weeks ago for first time after finding their web site on the internet. We went along coz the menu and pictures looked good. We were not dissapointed. The place is amazing, food was out of this world, lovely friendly staff and a great atmosphere. The crockery and cutlery is not what you would find in the poshest of restaurants, they have really gone all out to make your visit pleasant. The balance between pub and restaurant is also quite unique, I guess you make it what you want.

The transformation from what it used to be is pretty impressive. It looks as if someone has put a lot of thought into the decor and the service they want to provide. More of a Gastro pub but that's not a bad thing in any way. Freshly prepaired food and a good menu all of which will make you feel your money has been well spent. This is a must if you are looking for somewhere to go on a first date.

Nice wine, fabulous food and excellent service.

Agree with all these comments. The Well is a classy place. Me and a few of my mates just popped in for a drink and ended up staying to eat after seeing what was being served up. Pretty cool web site as well, the bubbly bar lady gave us all a business card before we left and told us to check it out. Take your missus here, she'll love it.

What a nice place. More of a restaurant than a pub. Food was lovely, staff are really friendly. Looking forward to going back.

Visited the pub for the first time just a couple of days ago, found the surroundings very pleasant and the staff very friendly. The food was excellent and would recommend to all.

After hearing good comments and reading reviews on this site we decided to have our Christmas dinner here (which was last night). We all had a great time, service was excellent as was the food. My husband was most impressed with the Adnams bitter.

Best Gasto style pub outside of London. Live close by, new it had been done up recently, didn't expect to find what I found. Looks like it's been plucked out of Farringdon. Excellent!

Have visited recently and it is lovely. Obviously aiming at the London market of people who have moved up there to avoid London property prices but expect to pay London beer and wine prices. That said though it is stylish, the staff are pleasant and the food is lovely - and definitely worth going to. Looking forward to a return visit

What a fantastic place! I have been here a few times now. The way they have done it out is really trendy. The staff are really nice and the food is out of this world.

Having seen this pub slowly decline over the last ten years I noticed it had been refurbished recently (June 04). I'm glad I made the effort to drop by and will be doing so regularly from now on. They have totally gutted the inside of the pub and a lot of thought has clearly gone into the decor. Inside it is very contemporary with a good selection of beers, wines and ales. They have also put a lot of effort into food and I would just as soon go there for a meal than any other other local restaurant. If you're bored with much of the same-old same-old in the Hitchin area then I would recommend you give it a go, you won't be disappointed.
