Unbeliveable pub, went in there with me old mate barry hatrick to pull a few binting milfs, but Jeremy the landlord caught barry giving a big dolly bird a dirty fish hook round the back of the bins, and I was asked to leave as I cheered at spurs winning on the tv, nice pub if you like getting a reach around.

In an area (Sheen/Mortlake) where there are no remarkable pubs - just snooty or plain ones, this pub remains a magnet for those seeking sport. It's diffcult to describe this pub diplomatically, but it's safe to say people who go to The Victoria wouldn't come here. I'm neither, as I prefer pubs elsewhere to Sheen.

If I were to recommend any pub in Sheen/Mortlake, however, I'd probably go for The Plough (the best of a disappointing bunch). The Pig & Whistle would be 'the one to avoid'. It looks slightly better than the dire pub it was , but it's still not a pub I'd recommend to anyone. If you're a student, you like bland mainstream lager while watching sky sports (mostly football) with expletives thrown in then you won't mind the place; but if you're after something more (cosy? relaxed? refined?) then forget it - head into Richmond instead.

One more thing, it says 'est. 1924' on the sign outside - this is incorrect. It's only been in existence since 1987 - before this there was a larger, grander pub known as The Bull.

A novel marketing opportunity for The Pig & Whistle.

A pub for swearing in Sheen.

An alternative for those who would rather watch the sport....

The Ship is 10 minutes walk away by the river via Sheen Lane. The have Sky and there is no swearing.
beer_dreamer - 29 Oct 2012 00:02
Agree with previous comment, only worth a visit these days to watch the footy as its the only pub in the area that has Sky. The clientele in here have gone back to how they were previously, a bit rough and ready! Personally i dont care what you look or sound like but i do object to the foul language. I popped in briefly the other day for a quick pint to catch up on the Olympics and every other word coming from the group of lads underneath the TV was F**k this and F**k that. Shamefully the bar lady was too busy joining in and laughing. Will be giving this place a miss next time.

Disappointing place. Only go there if you want somewhere to watch Sky Sports and have a swear rather than doing so in your front room. Had two drinks and both times given wrong change (Got charged 8 for one pint and the barmaid blamed the till - er...) Will go back but only to watch football with other fans rather than for the service or beer as there is no other pub that does so in the area.

We visited early on Bank Holiday evening. The pub had a reasonable number of customers, some clustered round the cricket on TV, others drinking sociably - quite what a pub should be. It was clean and comfortable. Slightly let down by a member of staff wearing clothes that she appeared to have slept in.

Agree with recent postings. Now much improved and friendly welcoming atmosphere. Tribute, Pride, Youngs Ordinary and Deuchers on draught. Must now be considered one of the better pubs in Sheen - although many would argue that would not be much of an accolade!

Largish single bar pub on Sheen Lane, quite close to the junction with the Upper Richmond Road.

It's carpeted and comfortable, yet rather featureless and bland, with little if anything of particular note, apart from rather striking purple wallpaper which prevents the pub from otherwise feeling too bright.

My recent evening visit ( having made a speedy exit from The Hare and Hounds ) quickly revealed that this pub has willingly taken up the trade from thos customers who, not surprisingly, no longer feel wanted at the H&H.

In contrast to its previous dubious reputation, the Pig and Whistle now appears to have a much better atmosphere and a good humoured mixed crowd were watching either Hull v Man Utd or Harlequins v Wasps on the TV screens at either end of the pub when I called in.

4 real ales were on - Youngs Ordinary, Special, London Pride and Deuchars IPA. As might be expected, the Youngs beers were selling well and, although I appeared to be the only customer drinking it, the IPA was rather good.

In all honesty, this is a rather unremarkable pub, but now that the Hare and Hounds has conceded the traditional pub territory, this appears to be the best bet in the immediate vicinity and I'll happily pop in again if passing through.

The pub is dead. Long live the pub !

Nice and busy Sunday lunchtime. Good beer and great atmosphere. Despite the purple dralon I still wish it were my local.....

Visited the pub on Wed last 23rd Sept Service fantastic, atmosphere great!!!
Landlord had a chat with me and a Half lager (at my request) Great Guy!!
Next time I'm in Sheen I will make it my business to visit the Pig and Whistle.
In actual fact, if I resided in Sheen it would be my local!!
Keep up the good work, My faith in UK pubs is restored.

We ate in this pub the other night and were treated appallingly by the landlady who shouted at us for asking why our food took 40 minutes to arrive. We were subjected to a Jeremy Kyle style rant as she told us "you've just got to understand sometimes that's just the way it is" Finally the money we paid for our meal with was thrown down on the table and we were told that "she's not going to be giving us any free drinks" It was a shame as we enjoyed our food and the other staff were perfectly pleasant. It just seems astonishing that someone running a business would choose to treat customers in this way. We felt very embarassed for her.
harperstein - 17 Sep 2009 11:33
I always used to be a little weary of coming in here as the clientele often seemed intimidating on first glance. How wrong I could have been, this is now my favourite place to come for a drink in sheen now the hare and hound has decided to become a poncy gastro pub.
I have often stopped in to the pig and whistle after work to catch the last few overs whilst the ashes have been on and have felt comfortable grabbing a seat by myself and having a few cold beers.
The only criticism I could give is that the bar area can often be slightly overcrowded with fellow punters supping their ales at the bar which can make ordering a bit of a hassle. Other than that keep up the good work guys!!

Actually don't know what the actual management is talking about past bad reputation.
The old staff being there in 2000, that is: Dave&Lisa, Leesa, Gemma, Simon, and Irene and me too (who were there just 2 months), was really appreciated, the pub was always full with ppl and events of course, beverages were OK and no bad reputation at all. Still have great memories of my beloved favourite customers, such as Brendon, Thomas, Barry, Cheesey, Mark, Gus, Troy and all the others I always keep in my heart.
Still don't know how "our" pub ended up yet comments are too explicit and I'm really scared to come back and find the Pig+Whistle completely changed. One day I'll come back and that day hope to find the same good old feelings and awesome reputation, too, the pub used to have when I was there!
Sin - 23 Jul 2009 00:18
Miserable staff particularly the Manager. She's horribly rude, spends her time complaining and shuffling people off furniture. Don't waste your money here, the staff behave like they could do without your custom. Won't ever be returning.
Jeff123 - 24 Jun 2009 21:16
the comments about the pig and whistle having no real ale are untrue it sells bombadier youngs and london pride it is also a member of finest cask ales and occasionally has a guest beer. the pub has been transformed from an ugly unapealing place to a warm welcoming enviroment and the food has gone from being frozen. to fresh at a very reasonable price
antick - 6 May 2009 10:44
Smells terrible did not stay!!!!
jonah2009 - 30 Apr 2009 20:48
I dont know if I suddenly lost the power of sight, but I had a good look and I didnt spot any real ale, only generic lagers and plates of food being dished out. The staff seemed nice enough and there are three plasma screens and although no sport was advertised Id imagine they have Sky etc.

It looks very smart but something is missing and thats not just the bog roll. I felt like I was sitting in a hotel lounge waiting to settle the bill and check out.

I dont think Ill be rushing back here.

this photo is quite old yi na ,a na this because i completley re/decorated it inside and out.Debbs and gerry, all the hard working staff (esp the short pinky who cannot c over the bar,but makes great punched eggs.)made it feel like i was working at home.i gained 5 stone while Debbs lost it.This pub had a bad reputation before the new management took over if you were or are aware of this reputation please pop in and see how much hard work has been spent over the last few months to make this into a friendly clean and socialible pub. I live in Northumberland but i felt like a local and was treated like a son GOD BLESS THE PIG AND WHISTLE AND ALL WHO EAT AND DRINK IN HER !! Not forgetting James and Angus ALREET !!
geordiepete - 26 Jan 2009 22:44
My first visit was two months ago. The food was excellent - ham hock - the Harvestoun 'Bitter and Twisted' was superb. The next two visits I had to send the ale back - it was oxidised i.e vinegar! I was not impressed when after this the very pleasant barmaid did not turn the lable around as this pint was way over its sell by...
Today it was fine. They are trying hard and its around the corner from work so i'll go back. Alot of people go in at lunch time for a chat or to read a paper so please turn the music off!! I don't need Crap FM on in everyspeaker in every corner. I just wish they would understand their market. A few more tweeks and it could be better.
realrealaleman - 15 Jul 2008 20:03
It is truly amazing to have seen the change in this pub. Once a frightening, graffiti ridden hell-hole, it is now a charming and cosy establishment with kronenbourg which could flow from the gods themselves. I hear that some of the old regulars from the dark-ages of this pub's history had somewhat damaged the pool table, so it has been removed (also in order to fit the brand new carpet as part of their huge refurbishment) although rumour has it that a new one is on its way- in the mean time there are three new plasma tvs strategically placed around the interior so as to maximise the sport watching possibilities. Now a friendly and charming drinking hole- thank god the old pig and the majority of their customers are long gone. We can feel free to drink in safety and comfort!
barwench - 13 May 2008 16:07
What have you done?! Shouldn't have got rid of the pool table, this pub never has been or never will be as good as any other pub in Sheen. Keep it simple. It's all well and good trying to appeal to new customers, but don't forget about your existing ones. It pains me to say that this pub is worse than it was before the new management.
Sheenboy - 22 Apr 2008 08:45
I agree with Sheenboy, ignore any comments pre July 2007. Since the arrival of the new management the beer is well maintained, the food, good wholesome pub grub and many of the prats have either found somewhere else or have been told to behave and are now doing so.
Give it another try.
Montrachet - 28 Nov 2007 15:36
These comments are fair enough for last year and before that, but as of July new management came into place. At first it was a struggle to get rid of some the prats that used to mess around in there, but now as the months have progressed so has the pub. It is my local and although there may be a few idiots trying to cause a bit of trouble overall it has come on leaps and bounds. I just want to thank Debbie the new manageress, the new owner and all of the bar staff for helping this pub claw back some respect. Hopefully soon it will be right up there with The Plough and the Hare and Hounds. So please... give it another chance.
Sheenboy - 31 Oct 2007 14:44
Not a good pub and has a bad reputation. rough, loud, lots of swearing, lou music.
anonymous - 23 Sep 2007 15:13
Went in here last night whilst waiting for a train back to Windsor. The barmaid was quite pleasant but the beer was a bit expensive. Also had the misfortune to sit near a couple of bald headed 50 year old would-be gangsters (what in Mortlake you ask?), who were
constantly swearing and talking of 'doing someone over'. Drank up and left, never to return. Avoid like
the plague.
WindsorLad - 3 Sep 2007 16:43
Full of chavs. Avoid.
theswerve01 - 20 Aug 2007 15:54
Absolute dump. Manager is completely useless. Used this place once and will never go back. The best thing that could happen to this place is to knock it down, preferably with the manager in it. If I could rate this in minus figures I would, 0 is being kind.
wombat - 31 Oct 2006 20:38
I knew this pub when it was 'The Bull' at Sheen (in another life-time obviously!) How you can now have such an obnoxious pub now, in such a salubrious area is beyond reason!! How do they do that? How dare they do that..!! I'm gonna have to side with 'ted' and 'chazzles' and all the others here, I went in the 'Pig' some weeks ago in the afternoon, service was almost non-existent, staff manners were non-existent! Locals in the bar looked & sounded ill-mannered. I will not waste time going here again. Harsh words from an ex-Sheenite, but life's too short to put up with dumps when there's palaces not too far away!! The 'Hare & Hounds' is much, much better. TJ
TeeJay - 1 Aug 2006 23:58
On a nostalgia trip with a friend from U.S. who was brought up in the area recently,as I was. Didn't know this place from old........bloody glad we didn't

Stick to the gardeners, charlie b or white heart at a push
mysteryposter - 23 Jun 2006 10:42
my nearest pub and typically it is an absolute dump. Full of thugs and never worth a visit despite the budget priced drinks. Cheap prices and cheap people, best avoided.
chazzles - 31 May 2006 15:22
Used to come here when I was a student at sixth form and it really was a decent pub, with a lovely female landlord. Unfortunately she left and it then got taken over by another woman who installed pool tables which ultimately led to it's demise. Loads of arse holes who want to fight all and sundry. The pub now has quite a few NF's going to it and causing rubbish. Not a nice place at all.
leopard_lady - 28 Mar 2006 20:37
Dark and nasty. OK if you enjoy watching fat middle-aged skinheads shouting at each other. Everyone else should steer clear.
cargiant - 27 Oct 2005 21:05
Avoid like the plague! Only go there if you want a fight. How this pub survives in this area totally escapes me.
Castor66 - 22 Sep 2005 14:27
Possibly the worst pub I have ever been into locally. Dark, dingy, hot and the food isn't up to much. Traditional naff pub microwave specials!
I_Love_Rugby - 21 Jun 2005 12:18
I'd pin this one down as East Sheen's few meatheads' watering hole of choice. Only been the once, and found it pleasant enough if largely empty at the time. There was a table of six or so lads yelling and behaving like, well, young lads in a pub, but they were good natured.
Found the staff friendly and the beer standard. Nothing special though, apart from their having an alcohol license.
Ruby - 20 Apr 2005 10:51
Thankfully, my experience of this pub on my recent visit was nothing like as bad as that of the three previous contributors.
Didnt particularly feel threatened or unwelcome
However it is an uninspiring pub and a watering hole in a place like East Sheen should simply be much better than this.
There are pubs readily close at hand which are much preferable to this one
John - 9 Nov 2004 16:31
never felt so unwelcome in a pub before as i did here, think staff should go on a charm course or just learn some politeness probably a bit far fetched. would never return again and would strongly recommend that if you enjoy a nice pint and like to relax, go somewhere else
ted - 2 Oct 2004 13:13
After a quite intimidating experience whilst watching a football match with my boyfriend have vowed never to go back. Full of obnoxious regulars who are looking for trouble!
Ruth - 30 Sep 2004 17:22
Not going back here! It's dingy, smelly, the clientele are all rather suspect, the food is naff and the beer tastes like someone's already drunk it before it's been passed to you
