Everards pub not far from the University. It seemed to be a locals pub with 2 small bars. Everards beers plus 1 guest (Great Yorkshire Lavender Blonde) and Old Rosie Cider were on. The Everards beers were Tiger, Original, Sunchaser, Beacon and the new Checker Cab. Pleasant enough little place.

This pub really is the diamond in the rough on Braunstone Gate. The pub has been my local for the past few years now having moved to the area and I fully endorse the last three reviews below which describe all the great things that this pub has to offer. Many of the regulars travel several miles to this pub which tells it’s own story.
The refurbishment carried out a few years ago still looks fantastic and the pub is always clean and welcoming. The pub has live music several nights a week and generally always on Friday and Saturday. The quiz on a Wednesday night is one of the best in Leicester having a good mix of questions for all ages and interests.
There is always the standard Everard’s offering on tap and always at least two guest ales to try. There is also a wide range of wines and spirits to cater for all tastes. Although no hot food, there are homemade cobs with generous fillings.
The Landlord is doing a tremendous job here and he is always approachable. His wit is always at the ready, too!

Over the last few years I have seen this pub go from a pretty ropey state to its current tastefully decorated and well stocked current situation. As a bit of a music fan I'll be down at the Black Horse on weekends and thursdays (if possible) for the folk music jam. On a strip of bars and loud booming music the Black Horse is a small oasis for people like me that enjoy being able to have a chat in a relaxed atmosphere. And just about every time I pop in I meet someone new to chew the fat and set the world to right with! The staff are just as sociable as the customers and the landlord encompasses the true spirit of traditional old boozer....at a range of vocal volumes it must be said! As far as drink choices there is an unusually large number of malt scotch's and other spirits. Most of the times I have been in there is the standard Everards selection (including original...why is that so hard to find?) as standard as well as two guest ales and some different lager choices for the football crowd hahaha! In summary I would advise this pub to any adult....if you like downing cheap shots and slurping on alcopops you may not find what you are looking for here

We have been coming here for over a year now since moving to Leicester the new landlord keeps it well stocked and a massive amount of unusual scotchs and good quality spirits as well as 7 or 8 cracking well kept real ales. He puts on a great quiz night with up to a £500 jackpot! Also he has a few music nights including open mic night where any one can come a long and join in. Keep an eye out for D K Alexander a really good singer we try and always go when hes on! Its always nice to see a proper British pub with good ales music and friendly staff you dont often get that these days! Fairplay to the landlord and his staff we will definately carry on coming back for more!

Since the new tenant took over nearly 2 years ago the pub has undergone a transformation. The interior has been sympathetically refurbished in a traditional style with wood & tile floors & paneling throughout. Live music events are hosted 4 evenings a week as well as a quiz on Wednesday nights. At the time of this review the jackpot was £500. Mind you I'm told its quite a tough quiz!!! The staff were polite & friendly and the atmosphere really welcoming with open fires on a bleak wintry day! This pub is a must for the weirdly beardy real ale enthusiast as there was 6 hand pulls in operation plus old Rosie Scrumpy on draught. This old school boozer is a heavenly oasis amongst the noisy alcopop infested bars that surround it. Only a shame no food available but I'm told that will change in the near future.

After my disappointing visit late last year I have been back a couple of times when back in Leicester, including this Sunday when I convinced the youth to take me for a Fathers Day pint and am happy to report that all six hand pumps in the back lounge bar have been operating and the beers tried have been in good condition. This Sunday there were Beacon, Tiger and Sunchaser from the Everards brewery, plus CW Waggledance, Anchor from the Titanic Brewery and a Scrumpy Cider.

I haven't bothered with this pub for ages. Hopeless, rude, uncaring staff or owners.

Having a business appointment nearby the following day, I took the opportunity to have an overnight in Leicester and take the first born around a few of the more traditional drinking places, rather than the shiny chromed student bars he usually frequents. After coming up with a list of four venues, he wasnt enamoured to find he hadnt previously visited any and the first port of call was to drag him across the River Sour to an Everards pub. Mmmh Everards pubs are usually rubbish round here , but I wasnt listening as I was determined to start the evening off with a decent pint of Tiger, so off we went to find The Black Horse. This proved to be a task made doubly difficult due to the Western Boulevard being blocked due to building work. But eventually we found it and I was pleased to find that The Black Horse is a traditional, two-bar back street drinking house with a front bar entered from the main street and then a further snug room at the back. What I wasnt pleased to find was four real ale hand pumps, all with their clips turned round. Now there probably was a good explanation why a pub in the GBG for its quality of ale manifests to have no ale on during a mid week evening. But after having it confirmed by the barman that there was no real ales on, I didnt bother to find out why and just turned round and headed for the door.. See, we dont bother with Everards pubs because theyre all crap !, and unfortunately on this particular evening, the Black Horse did not provide me with any ammunition to argue the generalisation put forward by the youth..

Called at this pub in March while visiting Leicester for the beer festival but although the Good Beer Guide said it opened at 3pm it didn't. We looked through the windows and the dogs barked at us but no-one came. An upstairs window was open but no-one heard us. Stood round for ages, but got thirsty and moved on.

cozy traditional pub, good atmosphere, live music, and quiz nights. fairly good selection of drinks, including guest ales.

Down to earth local pub with good selection of ales, front bar has tables of varying sizes and a certain feel that it is missing a dartboard (a couple of us said that, strange), carpetted rear bar has the feel of a snug but houses a huge plasma. Surprisingly large live music schedule for a relatively small place. Nice to hear the friendly barmaid admit to being unsure about one of the beers only because I havent tried that one yet. Old Rosie, Everards Tiger, Sunchaser, Beacon, Acorn Sovereign, Tring Jennys Yarn, Burton Bridge Sovereign Gold.

Excellent pint of Okells IPA. Has some character, one of those where you think what is this place on entry. modernisation would probably spoil it though.

Excellent pub with brilliant beer, fantastic staff, great entertainment and friendly customers. Well worth visiting!

Cosy two roomed boozer which has been consistantly good since I started drinking there some 15 years ago. In fact it has improved since the advent of more guest ales (I've never been a fan of Everards ales), the removal of the pool table, more seating, etc. Expect to pay a little more than some of the free house prices in Leicester, but worth it for a good pint. They often have guest ales by Brunswick, Bath Ales, and White Horse Brewery.

Made an out of the way detour to this pub to find a decent pint. BIG mistake. Was served a DREADFUL pint of Tiger which the surly barmaid was reluctant to change (the usual 'other people have been drinking it retort was the response). Well I was spitting feathers and this was my first pint so even a dodgy pint of lager would have been quaffed sharpish so this WAS a POOR pint. The eventual replacement of a pint Beacon wasn't really up to much either. How this pub is in the good beer guide is beyond me and the sarcastic remark on departure by the barmaid was noted. If you like good beer avoid this place like the plague as you're served dross and treated like an idiot. I'm sure locals will disagree but this is the comment of someone who just dropped by to have a reasonable pint of beer but was extremely disappointed by both beer and attitude.

An Everards pub but with a free house feel because up to seven cask ales are on offer. The landlord has long experience of how to serve a decent pint. Just two rooms but each one supports the community aspect with comfort to match and dont the locals know it. A fair walk from the city centre shouldnt be a bar to anyone who appreciates good beer in a good, honest pub.

The only real pub left in Braunstone Gate! Good range of ales, friendly staff, and decent music/live acts (sometimes!). Decent prices and comfortable surroundings - if you like your proper pubs, that is.
