Everards pub not far from the University. It seemed to be a locals pub with 2 small bars. Everards beers plus 1 guest (Great Yorkshire Lavender Blonde) and Old Rosie Cider were on. The Everards beers were Tiger, Original, Sunchaser, Beacon and the new Checker Cab. Pleasant enough little place. blue_scrumpy - 17 Aug 2014 16:09 |
This pub really is the diamond in the rough on Braunstone Gate. The pub has been my local for the past few years now having moved to the area and I fully endorse the last three reviews below which describe all the great things that this pub has to offer. Many of the regulars travel several miles to this pub which tells it’s own story. The refurbishment carried out a few years ago still looks fantastic and the pub is always clean and welcoming. The pub has live music several nights a week and generally always on Friday and Saturday. The quiz on a Wednesday night is one of the best in Leicester having a good mix of questions for all ages and interests. There is always the standard Everard’s offering on tap and always at least two guest ales to try. There is also a wide range of wines and spirits to cater for all tastes. Although no hot food, there are homemade cobs with generous fillings. The Landlord is doing a tremendous job here and he is always approachable. His wit is always at the ready, too! Over the last few years I have seen this pub go from a pretty ropey state to its current tastefully decorated and well stocked current situation. As a bit of a music fan I'll be down at the Black Horse on weekends and thursdays (if possible) for the folk music jam. On a strip of bars and loud booming music the Black Horse is a small oasis for people like me that enjoy being able to have a chat in a relaxed atmosphere. And just about every time I pop in I meet someone new to chew the fat and set the world to right with! The staff are just as sociable as the customers and the landlord encompasses the true spirit of traditional old boozer....at a range of vocal volumes it must be said! As far as drink choices there is an unusually large number of malt scotch's and other spirits. Most of the times I have been in there is the standard Everards selection (including original...why is that so hard to find?) as standard as well as two guest ales and some different lager choices for the football crowd hahaha! In summary I would advise this pub to any adult....if you like downing cheap shots and slurping on alcopops you may not find what you are looking for here TigerCity - 25 Apr 2013 13:29 |
We have been coming here for over a year now since moving to Leicester the new landlord keeps it well stocked and a massive amount of unusual scotchs and good quality spirits as well as 7 or 8 cracking well kept real ales. He puts on a great quiz night with up to a £500 jackpot! Also he has a few music nights including open mic night where any one can come a long and join in. Keep an eye out for D K Alexander a really good singer we try and always go when hes on! Its always nice to see a proper British pub with good ales music and friendly staff you dont often get that these days! Fairplay to the landlord and his staff we will definately carry on coming back for more! lynchie694 - 8 Apr 2013 20:26 |
Since the new tenant took over nearly 2 years ago the pub has undergone a transformation. The interior has been sympathetically refurbished in a traditional style with wood & tile floors & paneling throughout. Live music events are hosted 4 evenings a week as well as a quiz on Wednesday nights. At the time of this review the jackpot was £500. Mind you I'm told its quite a tough quiz!!! The staff were polite & friendly and the atmosphere really welcoming with open fires on a bleak wintry day! This pub is a must for the weirdly beardy real ale enthusiast as there was 6 hand pulls in operation plus old Rosie Scrumpy on draught. This old school boozer is a heavenly oasis amongst the noisy alcopop infested bars that surround it. Only a shame no food available but I'm told that will change in the near future. chipsteadgirl - 30 Mar 2013 17:24 |
