Popped in the 'White Orse' the other evening. Pleasantly surprised (newly decor8ed..?) & staff friendly. Will pop in again. Word to 'Pubspy69' - I always try &avoid GP's if I can...! :o) TJ

Open under new management and transformed
Best pub in LS
TheGP - 11 Nov 2013 22:04 |
sounds more like a personal issue than a review of the pub..
|
GP no need to be personal we all have a view. The management have let their loyal clients down by expecting them to tolerate poorly washed glasses, pipes cleaned once a month if you are lucky. The reason his punters are in every pub but his is not a co-incidence. His oldest customer in his 90s drinking there since his teens had to leave and find another pub.

pubspy69 you are an idiot
the only truth in your rant is about george falling out with some of the locals - a fair point, but the rest of it is just fiction
the pint of Guinness in here is far far better than elsewhere in Sunbury - where on earth do you think it is better?
it's a proper pub - who gives a shit about the toilets - you shit in them.
if you want a fancy dan superficial rubbish pub serving crap drink then go to the Magpie or especially the Phoenix - leave the White Horse to people who actually like proper pubs

This place has gone to the dogs. The place is falling down and has pigeons nesting above the windows making a mess of the people passing by as well as the walls etc. The staff are not interested, the beer is rank and sold in dirty glasses which renders it flat within seconds. The toilets are beyond filthy and normally flood when more than 10 people are drinking there. The owner George has fallen out with all his customers, the pubs golf society still exists but drinks in the Flowerpot. Not a place for a man with a weak stomach. Its a shame as it has the potential to be the best but blinkered management too stupid to admit they are wrong has it ruined. The Guinness is now the worst pint in Sunbury and no doubt further a field. AVOID Hoe the council allow it to remain open is a mystery.

A fine pub, it stands out amongst the others in Sunbury for it's sheer old fashioned ness. Not to everyones tastes I understand. Old men, proper drinkers, Irish and sports fans welcome. Braying Henrys and wine drinkers not..

I like this pub. I'm not a frequent visitor but when ever I have been in I've received a very warm welcome from the staff and the regulars. It's a spacious, comfortable, traditional English pub - no frills - honest.
Recently spent a very pleasant evening there with my friends and my son's friends (they're only 18 yrs old) and were made very at home by everybody.
Will visit here more often.

Hard to say anything good or bad about this place - it just is what it is. Recently decorated - new carpets, curtains, tables & chairs - but somehow looks the same as when Jimmy & Mary-Jo were here (15+ years ago) - even the same punters sitting in the same places! I'd definitely describe it as a blokes' pub, but I know plenty of women who love it - mainly for the characters who frequent it.

For the sake of clarity Canadason (who was visiting from Canada!) was referring to the Grey Horse, not the White Horse - although there is nothing wrong with the White Horse

The Perfect Pub experience. Cheers to Niall, the family, and all the lads, (even you Tony). What can I say about the Grey Horse, great beer and great company, isn't that what it's all about?? Quaint and quiet (at times!!) but the perfect place to kick back and meet the locals. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and can't wait to go back. Take care of the place and I hope to see ya soon!!
|
Different horses for different courses. This isn't a young and lively venue, but it is what it is. Niall is a legend, he'll do anything for a half of cider! The place is nice inside, with a pool table, and a popular place to watch great sports games. There is nothing wrong with The White Horse, it's a great pub to have a quiet drink. Keep up the good work.

An acquired taste as some of the reviews state you probably either love or hate this pub - It's allright though.

the landlord looks scarily like Andy Pipkin from Little Britain
Don't let that put you off the pub though - it's a good old traditional one.

A good friendly pub. Niall was very welcoming to us Canadians. Not a man's pub at all! Hi to Sammy!
|
Rubbish anonymous - The White Horse is a very welcoming pub. I would say however, that it is a mans pub - There will literally be no women in here apart from the Landlady on many nights, hence it might not be ideal for your crappy bar/Magpie type of crowd.
This is a perfect example of a proper pub though - And it always has the unexpected - Last night a Jazz quartet were playing! A bit rough round the edges, but a refreshing change from the sterile, chain type of pub which outnumber this place by millions..

as the others all say. This is a pub that will be there forever with the same people in it. Not very welcoming though I found. They don't seem keen on new trade

Fantastic pub. I was sick in my trousers in this pub which makes it good.
|
Glad to report that although the outside of the pub looks shiny and new, the inside has been left untouched!

Now benefited from a smart paint job, looks revamped - Haven't seen if they have redone the interior yet though..
|
This is an old man's pub to the extreme. Friendly enough place and some exceptionally strange jukebox choices are available e.g. Mike Oldfield's Moonlight Shadow. It is a little run-down but it is a good pub to go to for a reality check. It has a pool table that is usually availble.
|
Pub has been on the site since 1729 and possibly some of the clientele as well.
I like this pub although many wouldn't - If you like a traditional tatty old mans pub, full of people with red faces and that serves brown ale this is your one. Also has a pool room and a jukebox with some very old songs on. A breath of fresh air compared to the manufactured fare you get elsewhere (although fresh air is a premium actually in the pub itself...)

On the corner of The Avenue and Thames Street, this pub has been on the site since before 1729.
