New landlord, Paul ,at The Anchor. Looks like Doombar and Harvey's Sussex Bitter will be the regular ales for the time being. Timothy Taylor's Landlord was the guest on Sat 19th Oct. All in good condition. The kitchen is being renovated and food will be back on from the 28th Oct. Things are on the up at The Anchor. Good luck Paul.

I visited on Saturday 20th October and had a few excellent pints of Doom Bar at only 3.00. Courage Best was also on offer and in great condition, best pint of Courage I've had for some time. I wouldn't usually drink Courage Best but it looked so good I had to try it and was glad I did. Steve the landlord knows his stuff, he actually asked why I wanted to swop just to make sure there was nothing wrong with the Doom Bar. The food looked good and is very reasonably priced. Dog friendly, Julie took a shine to our dog and went out of her way to make sure he was fed and watered. Great service, very friendly, highly recommended, we will definetly be back.

This pub was closed if I remember correctly up until the very end of last year. As I was driving through Kent on a journey back to London I stopped off for something to eat on a Saturday evening. I was pleasantly surprised to walk in a see a welcoming pub and an open fire and a warm hello from a chap called 'Steve' behind the bar, who turned out to be the new Landlord. I enjoyed chatting with him and a glorious half of Directors (I was driving) and sat down to a really excellent curry in the restaurant. I have to say, this pub is unique in the way that it's quiet enough for me to enjoy but also has the jovial atmosphere from the locals. Next time we go back, I want it to be the summer as the beer garden is really the main attraction for me here, that and the large duck pond where you can feed the ducks. In the summer after taking in some of Kents finest countryside I could think of nowhere finer to relax with a good pint of ale. This is not a new pub or a fancy wine bar, more traditional with good beer and food so take that on board and you will really enjoy this pub.

I'd received a message from the new owner asking me to reconsider my review of last year, so a group of us cycled down. Quite a long journey to find the kitchen was closed - everyone had gone to a wedding. What are pub websites for if not to impart that information? The ale (Adnam's Green thingy) ran out after three quarters was pulled, and the backup (Broadside) wasn't all that. And as you walk in, you are still confronted with the locals on the pool table.
I stand by my review of a year ago - it's a pleasant enough place, but there are a lot of more welcoming places nearby.

Popped in mid afternoon for a quick pint - You can always spot a "local pub for local people" because the requlars are sprawled all over the bar making it very difficult (if not physically impossible) for anyone else to get to the bar. One of our number navigated his way through the locals and we got served. The locals seemed a nice enough bunch, but I for one felt as though I was intruding, so we took our beers into the garden and watched the ducks. It's a nice enough place, and a lovely garden, but if you're not a local there are other more welcoming places not very far away.

New owners since the rather negative review below. Sizable beer garden and a delightful walk along the Royal Military Canal from Hamstreet.

When visited last year (06)- thought food was good, but not a particularly hospitable pub to non-locals

Nice pub and nice people in my experience.

Update. I suspect the current licensee(s) is/are attempting to rig this forum but here goes. I last visited on a Friday in mid August. As I stated in my earlier review, as soon as I entered the pub with my parents the clientele (a hotchpotch of boy racers and chavs) turned round to stare. Nothing like a friendly welcome. Upon attempting to order a round of drinks I was ignored by the woman working behind the bar who, knowing full well that I was waiting, decided to continue talking to another customer for several minutes. The atmosphere, if thats the correct word, was more akin to one of the many dreadful town pubs in Ashford and certainly not befitting Ruckinge. To make a viable business out of country pubs you have to provide a genuine welcome to all comers, not just those who visit week in week out. Dont get me wrong, I enjoy spit and sawdust pubs as much as I do smart gastropubs but I object to being treated like an unwelcome intruder. After quickly finishing our drinks I returned the glasses to the bar and said goodbye to the barmaid. The food looked decidedly unappetizing and very poor value compared to other pubs on the fringes of Romney Marsh. I was, however, greeted by a shrug of her shoulders and silence. I sincerely hope this pub improves and does not get converted into a residential dwelling because Ruckinge needs the Blue Anchor, just not the current Blue Anchor. This is a pub for those who really don't care and never visit other pubs. Avoid you are better off spending your money elsewhere.

Truly awful place. This has the potential to be a fantastc pub (great location, building etc) but is ruined by some of the laziest bar staff I have ever encountered (they really couldn't care less), a very selection of drinks at high prices, bland must-we-try-harder pub-food-by-numbers and a clientele of chavs and thickos. If you like good cheer in proper pubs avoid.

Had Sunday lunch whilst on holiday in Ruckinge. The food was great and the staff made us feel at home. Would visit again if in the area.
