Lord Napier, Thornton Heathback to pub details please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.
Friendly bar staff and you don't wait too long to get served either. If your going to a football match at Selhurst Park it's this one or the Cherry Trees ! this pub has pleny of room inside which helps when busy and it is usually mixed on match days away and home fans.

In here after Saints v Palace on Monday night. Ordinary and Special only which were ok. Some very dodgy karaoke going on, version of Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown almost broke me down. Not worth going out of your way for unless the jazz is any good.

I rate this pub well for the jazz, which will always be an attraction for me. Although the Young's bitter was good, it is a shame that they miss the opportunity to attract those who are not keen on the taste by having guest ales. No Sunday lunch at the moment, but I understand this is being addressed.

Nice traditional friendly pub. The ale is kept well and there is a nice atmosphere on the live trad jazz days on Sunday afternoon and Thursday night. There will be a very good local band playing on Saturday 30th June 2007 Free entrance. Playing all styles and genres from reggae to rock. Come along & Support your local

A comfortable traditional pub serving well-kept Youngs (Wells?) beer. The landlord is an ale enthusiast, and the clientele are a wide cross-section from footie fans to jazz lovers.

Lord Napier, I know it well, used to be my dads favourite haunt on Friday and Saturday nights. I was born in Thornton Heath in Northwood Road in 1946, left there in 1961 when I joined the Navy. Lord Napier then was run by Pat Merryman, no jazz then, just someone on the piano, and a good old singalong.
When my parents were in the pub, me and my brother played outside, with the occasional bottle of "Muscado" and a bag of crisps brought out to us.
How about this then, in the late 50's my dad had the offer to buy his house, No 71 Northwood Road, for 500 to which he said "Bloody house aint worth it", so he stayed on controlled rents until the day he died, wonder what its worth now.

Well, it looks like I have the honour of being the first to post a comment on this pub - do people in Thornton Heath not use this website, I wonder ?.The Lord Napier is one of Youngs 4 famous music pubs and has been one of London's best known jazz venues since the late 1960's. Jazz was in progress on my Sunday afternoon visit until 2.30 pm. Jazz also features on some midweek evenings - phone the pub for details. Apart from the jazz, this is an unexceptional traditional Youngs local, quite close to The Fountain Head. Beer on reasonable form. It was noticeable that the beer price had not been increased in recognition of the jazz being on - a welcome change from some other pubs.
