I really liked this pub. We arrived shortly before the pub was due to close for the afternoon, which may explain why the one barmaid (possibly the landlady) chose to blank us. Luckily another barmaid after if she could help. But I didn't need help (some may argue otherwise)! I just wanted a drink. Ales were Butcombe Adam Henson's Rare Breed, Fuller's London Pride & Hopback Crop Circle. The cider was Harry's Medium Farmhouse. I'll give a 7/10. But it could have been much better with a less insular focus, i.e. acknowledge all customers, instead of just the locals.

We pulled into the Little Chuff car park on the A303, and like amadcitrus, we saw the sign.
It is a real out of the way pub, which welcomes dogs. They sell packets of designer dog biscuits at the bar.
All that aside, I had an excellent pint of Sheep Dip, and my wife enjoyed her spritzer, with our equally excellent ploughman�s. The staff were friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was quite relaxed.
I do not see any reason for not making the detour, and calling in again.

Our coach stopped here mid afternoon on a beautiful afternoon in early July following a successful tour of the Sixpenny Brewery in Sixpenny Handley, Dorset (thanks Scott!). Wonderful views southwards towards the Blackmore Vale.
Guest ales included the DBC Durdle Dor and Palmers Copper Ale.
I'm afraid I disagree with wickedcider's comment (04Jun2007) about Strongbow being a 'known cider' ..... fizzy apple juice perhaps but certainly NOT a cider in the real sense of the word. Plenty of the real stuff available in this part of the world ...

With a car full on the way to a music festival, this was a very pleasant alternative to the little chef on the A303 that we were going to stop at! Had it not been for the painted sign, directing drivers down the little country road to get there, we wouldn't have known about it.
Friendly staff, 3 real ales on (a couple of Palmers ales, can't remember the other) thatchers cheddar valley on tap, the fish and chips is the lunch to go for! delicious batter and much better portions than most of the other meals i could see around us.
I imagine the 'garden' (small field!) across the road from the front of the pub is very inviting in the summer.

Possibly one of the most disappointing meals that we have had for a long time. We were recommended the Fox and Hounds as a good place to eat but it fell well short of expectations. The starter was moderate and lost on a large plate with a lettuce leaf and a quarter of a tomato as a poor excuse for a salad. The duck that we ordered for the main course was over-cooked, gristly and very tough, inedible in fact. The broccoli was hard and hadn't been in water for more than a few minutes. We like al dente but not raw. The overall service was poor and after receiving our mains we did not receive a visit from anyone to see if all was OK. When the barman came to clear an adjoining table I told him about the poor main course and said I would speak again at the end of the meal. I thought that one of the waiting staff was scruffily dressed and with trousers that looked like they needed a wash. Overall a very disappointing experience and we shall not return to the pub again.

15th century pub tucked away in anice spot with lovely views over Blackmore Vale from The Green opposite. Warm rustic feel, large log fire in one area, bar is central. Part thatched. Conservatory can be cold. Not much drinking space as all laid over to food. 3 real ales: Youngs Bitter, Wadworth Malt & Hops, Palmers 200. Youngs was in average condition. Despite specials boards � no bargain meals on offer. Ribeye Steak �15. Parking can be tight

out of the way place, so not much passing trade.
decent ales served and a widely varied selection...menu is a little limited, but seems popular enough.
comfortable for just beer if you wish, better now its no smoking throughout of course.
not far from A303, so if you're wizzing down to the SW, it's worth stopping off for a pint.

I've been visiting the Fox & Hounds for a couple of decades. It has changed hands quite a lot. It's a nice looking pub, inside and outside, away from the main road, sits on a hill with a great view but it's kinda out of the way. Not much parking. It caters to an older, richer crowd, a lot of weekend visitors, unfortunately the locals don't come here much anymore. It could do with some younger livelier visitors. The newest owners, who seem fairly friendly, have made some changes to the menu and the food is now pretty good. There's some decent beers but stick with the known ciders, like Strongbow, the fancy stuff doesn't taste very good and it's quite expensive.
