When you go to the loo, beware of the final step. I missed it and broke my ankle

Cracking pub, I had an all dayer here with a few friends to watch the rugby. It has big HD TV's, hope it doesn't go to 3D, it's perfect how it is. Also had a burger there, which is massive, and soaked up a lot of beer. I'm from London and would love to find a pub doing those portion sizes for those prices round here. It's definitely on the agenda for a six nations visit.
Oh, and also, good decor and the people who drink there seem like a good crowd, neither too mincey or to chavvy.

A popular Youngs pub half way up Park Street. Its about the only place in the street that still resembles a proper pub, all the rest being some type of trendy bar affair or nightclub. Very useful for stopping to quench the first when on a long walk up the hill to Clifton!
Its a good sized bar with several different areas. The main bar has large windows out on to the pavement that fold back in the summer. Theres a smaller room at the back with a vaulted glass roof, another seating area down a few steps to the right, and a downstairs bar although this was closed off for a private function on a recent visit. Although it can get quite busy, most punters seem to stick to the main bar and you can usually find a seat if youre prepared to venture a little further in to the depths of the pub.
The floor is traditional old floor boards and there is some painted wood panelling around the lower part of the walls. Mostly its fairly traditional, although there are some trendy glass lights hanging above the bar. Theres a large plasma stuck on the wall at the back, although this was off on our visit. The music was a tad loud to make conversation easy, but it was probably appropriate for the time of year, the pub being filled with office workers on Christmas nights out.
Beers on tap were Youngs Bitter and Youngs Special, Butcombe and Tribute. Ciders were Addlestones and Stowford Press. This seemed slightly expensive at 3.50 a pint, but is, I suppose, par for the course around these parts.

Excellent venue at the weekends. All the charm of an English pub with great live music on a Fri and Sat night. Last time I went, there was a man singing and playing a guitar; good quality accoustic music which makes a difference to MTV pop in other bars on Park Street. Drinks reasonably priced (small wine around 3), friendly bar staff, but gets very busy after about 10pm. Great atmosphere.

Cracking pub. Very generous sized portions of food, really good food and perfectly washed down with the different ales on tap. Ideal for watching the sport on their 50+" plasma tvs. A lively bar regardless of sport, with quiz nights and live music most. Definately going back there.

Modernised pub, doubtless not to everybody's taste, but thankfully still has four real ales on (three Youngs plus Bombardier). Wasn't expecting too much, but my pint of Kew Gold was fine. Probably a bit lively in the evening, but pleasant enough on a late Saturday afternoon.

Youngs beer was never to my taste, but now its brewed by charlie wells it seems even worse. Bombadier isnt exactly one of the worlds greatest beers either. Nice pub. poor service. even poorer beer.

This pub has changed beyond all recognition - Oh Young's, what have you done? It used to be wrought iron spiral staircases, grand bars, quality smiles beer and a fantastic dark cellar bar.
Now, it's like every other boring pub. A nightmare. Poor beer, unfriendly staff, cold and unwelcoming. Don't go there.
|
Dreadful pub. Obnoxious barstaff and has only offered Waggle dance when I've been in. Pints regularly served with large heads and barstaff reluctant to top up. Severely handicapped by being a Youngs pub and having to serve their watery dross.
|
Full of fat businessmen at lunchtime. Beer was very good, but pretty expensive. Tailored to rich, sweaty men in ties with red faces leering at the barmaids. Catch it when it's quieter and it is excellent though.
|
Quite like it, trendyish decoration, nice beer. Usually gets quite busy later on.
|
Very nice place. Dark putty coloured walls, dark wood trim, wraught iron fixtures. The bar itself is grand with a big huge mirror backing. It's almost like a quiet club.
