Benton, Three of us returned to the pub yesterday lunchtime, along with four week old grandaughter Alice, for me two pints of Sheps and yet another baguette. Spoke to the landlady and looked at the prices. We all loved the place (still).

Overpriced. And then some.

The flirtatious (read: irritating) landlady seems to have had the negative comments removed and suddenly there is an influx of glowing ones. Anyone who thinks this pub is good either a) did not view the menu prices or b) speak with the landlady owner. Try either, you won't go back.

A lovely village pub with a traditional timber interior. A very nice pint of mild on tap. Oh and a beautiful fireplace.

Excellent pub. Comfy and heavily timbered inside. Really good pint of Spitire to wash down the Bacon, Brie and Cranberry Sauce baguettes. Nice friendly atmosphere.

A belissimo pub with very kind locals and a lovely garden .However unfortunately the food Italiana is very poor quality and is driving away many customers each and every day. The lady behind the bar with the fake accent should change the providers of the food Italiana and perhaps also dress a little less provocatively and show less red skin

Great pub with a large selection of board games to play, sadly now a sheperd naeme pub. They do at least stock the more interesting ales from the range. Bishops finger, early bird and another was currently on, with dragon fire turned around.

A warm welcome awaits you when you visit this great country pub. One of those pubs you feel completely at ease in. The Landlord and Landlady are true professionals & have an impressive knowledge of beers and wines, and are both great conversationalists. Now owned by Shepherd Neame, all beers are kept to impressive standards, and the wines available are superb. Decor is traditional country pub, and hygeine is first class. Also dog friendly, which is an added bonus after long country walks.

Lovely big pub with a good comfy bar area that is separate from the dining area. I would definitely recommend this as a place to eat, food is very good and the portions generous, but it also works as a boozer with a massive fireplace and well kept ales (sadly all Sheps).

Lots of comments here about the landlady. I understand why she draws these comments, but personally I like a strong willed person who takes pride in their work and interest in their customers. Each to their own.

Been using this pub intermittently for years. We almost always eat, the food is not cheap but always good. The landlady is efficient (not rude), gives good advice and is always welcoming as are all the staff. Great interior, big dining area and a big open fire.
The main reason for going to the Cock Inn was the Youngs beer, (the Special was always very well kept) but as been noted elsewhere, it has changed to Shepard Neame. I believe in recent years this and a pub in Canterbury were the only Youngs pubs in Kent, now both are SN. It appears Youngs did not want to deliver to Kent after the amalgamation with Wells and the brewery move from Wandsworth to Bedford. We still go, the SN Late Red is good. I would be interested to know of any pub in central Kent that regularly has Youngs as a guest beer.

We turned (7 of us) up here on a sunday which was not planned, we knew we might have a long wait which is to be expected but the Land Lady was SOO Rude to us and very blunt and kept telling us we should of booked! We got told we have to wait 1 hour and a half which was no problem but she kept on being rude! we sat down in about 30min ( what was all the fuss about) the food was really good but after that we had problems with bill with the land lady poking her nose in again and being very rude! Have to say the landlord and the other staff were really nice shame about the Land Lady (She's not a people person) Will not be going back

For many years, this was the only Youngs pub in these parts. However, when passing recently, I was surprised to see a whole 'flight' of bright red Spitfire unbrellas installed over the numerous bench/tables in the patio area. It turns out that it was sold to Shepherd Neame at the end of July (much to the surprise of the landlord who was on holiday at the time!) although there seems to have been no publicity about this on the brewer's website (or elsewhere). However, that aside, this remains a very popular food-orientated pub within a historic building which retains plenty of charm. Beer-wise, the offering is now Master Brew, Spitfire, Bishops Finger and Late Red (and thankfully the quality still as good as ever).

Found the pub by a happy accident, a great welcome and a lovely atmosphere, the landlord and lady are a delight as are the staff and the food looked fab, all in all a great local pub with great beers food, and wine and real log fires!
Go and enjoy, we will again and again.

Wonderful pub with a beautiful feel and warm ambience. The food is well above what you would expect from your average pub and the Fish is a must. Good food is not cheap and although the prices are competitive please remember that food of this quality needs a good chef and quality ingredients. You get what you pay for and this is worth it! The service is friendly and prompt and the beer spot on. Bottom line if you like a good British pub with good booze and quality food check this place out. I love my football but what a pleasure to find a pub without that hideous Sky Sports banner outside. This is a pub for pub people......Enjoy.

Great pub with friendly atmosphere, great beer, a roaring log fire and best of all they welcomed my golden retrievor (in fact she got a biscuit before I got my pint). It has great outdoor space for the summer and after one visit we knew all the names of the owners and bar staff and have made it our business to visit at least once a week.

The Cock continues to maintain a high standard of excellence; it's by some margin the best pub I know in the immediate vicinity of Maidstone.
The Young's beer remains superb; to my taste it's sometimes on the cold side during the summer months, but I've very rarely had a pint that wasn't in immaculate condition.
The service is efficient and friendly; it's great, in a pub like this, to find the landlord/landlady (and often both) so often behind the bar.
Absolutely first rate.

that was meant to be the 11th below, sorry

Visited briefly with a friend on the 12th of October 2006, we were greeted by a charming young man who was quick, efficient and very professional and caring. The pub has a nice atmosphere and the locals seem friendly and mature, no kids running round screaming! The wine was served at just the rite temperature, we briefly looked at the food menu but unfortuantly we had already eaten, the choice is very good though. Much more than a pub with food, you should see for yourself. And by the way, thanks Matt (barman) and Dave (owner?) for a lovely evening, we shall pop in again soon x

Visited 30 Sep 06. This is a Youngs House, and the full range was available. We had Waggledance which was in excellent condition. The barmaid was helpful and attentive. We can heartily endorse all that has been said about the food. This place is certainly not your average boozer.

Sunday lunch (you need to book ahead)on 1 Oct 06 was absolutely first class. Staff, overseen by working landlady, were polite, cheerful, friendly and efficient. As stated below, it's not cheap but you get what you pay for and the quality is excellent and worth it; wonderful and imaginitive range of vegetables with the Sunday roast. Again echoing the comment below, food is prepared freshly not defrosted quickly.

EXCELLENT PUB! Visited 22/09/06, great service, clean pub, nice restaurant area, good music, and to top it all the Barman who served me was a Justin Timberlake lookalike, hmmmm, YES PLEASE! xxx

I've never drunk better Young's than they serve here - and as a serious Young's fan. I've drunk in more than half their pubs. The landlord and landlady are friendly and welcoming, the bar staff polite and efficient. I prefer no music at all, but it's usually not too loud or obtrusive. Never eaten here, but the food looks good, though it's quite expensive. Architecturally a classic; fantastic fire all winter.
earlydrinker - 24 Apr 2006 19:16
This pub is for anyone who takes their beer and food seriously. There are three or four bars, all with that 'lived in' feeling. The food is cooked fresh when ordered so be prepared for a wait, it is worth it. Well kept Young's beer, good meals, friendly staff, big car park, what more can you want. When we walked in for the first time we were greeted as though they had been waiting for us - of course we've been back again and again and ag...
