There's a Freudian slip....it is of course THE BOATHOUSE !

Now renamed THE BOASTHOUSE. New management etc. Refurbished interior...pity they don't look after the beer as well as they look after the 'fabric'. Doombar was definitely 'sour'.

Looking good under new ownership, has been tidied up, beer good although could do with beers from smaller breweries, currently Doom Bar, 6X & Ringwood Best. Food looks good from the temporary new menu. Staff friendly.

This poor old pub. I get sad when I read comments about the Manager or Licensee not running after you 24 hours a day. Why do we expect the Landlord to be a slave . We do it and when he has a gut full, we say, managers come and next thing they go. They only go because they are not happy with the way they have been made fit it by the punter. No point him employing all the staff (for your benefit) if he still has to do the job himself. Next owner/manager, lets give some healthy support and see this place get going.

We went to this pub on a Monday evening for my son's birthday. We come here maybe twice or three times a year and have always found it pleasant enough. There is the wonderful pirate ship for the children to play on and last night there was a bouncy castle as well. For a Monday evening, there were a surprisingly high number of customers, most of whom were eating. The addition of a free salad bar was a real bonus. Our meals were really very nice, the burgers were generously sized and imaginatively presented. My steak was the nicest I have had in a long time, tender, delicious and cooked to perfection. The staff were attentive and helpful, and the landlord was welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed looking out over the marina, watching a heron fishing at close range. All in all, a really lovely couple of hours, and I would highly recommend this pub.

I can't think of too many positive things to say about this place. Possibly the only good thing to say is that it has a salad bar, which is highly recommended, as it will help to fill your plate when you experience the lack of vegetables that come with the main courses. We went to the beef and barge on a lovely Saturday evening in July, a night when a place like this should have been almost full. It wasn't. The waiting staff were so underworked that 3 of them brought our meals to the table. The food was average, the only vegetables served were peas! There was a choice of chips or potatoes, and to be fair the chips were good, probably the best part of the meal. When asked if we enjoyed the meal, I commented on the fact that a better choice of vegetables would have been nice, to which I got a "oh we usually serve peas and carrots" and there was almost a "but I don't know why we didn't tonight" comment on the back of that! When we arrived there was a "steps" cd playing, loudly, which when we mentioned it to the manager (?) was turned down. However it was still competing with the commentary of the football match which was on the TV. The manager or is he the owner? was totally unprofessional in his dress, his presence (or lack of it) he sat for a period of time watching the football, and then in the middle of the restaurant with his laptop. If it wasn't for the fact that he was behind the bar directing staff when we arrived, i would have thought he was another punter. At no time did he bother to come and ask if everything was alright, or if we enjoyed the food. We drove past several "country" pubs to get to this place, I will stop at one of them the next time - very disappointed and not recommended.

Forgot to mention (see previous comment) that I had to take my pint back and get it replaced; it looked and tasted as though it had been laced with milk.

April 2010 and the previous reviewers have been too generous. Unfortunately the Beehive is closed.... but it would be worth swimming down the canal to get to the Canal Tavern..... or anywhere else !!

What a load of poop!! Took my mum and dad out one beautiful sunny, spring evening to enjoy the weather canal and good home cooked food. What did we get? Processed packet ham, bland chips, and overdone eggs. The cost 8.95 SCANDALOUS!! Wish i had read the other reveiws on this page before I went. Stay well clear if you are looking for value for money and a friendly atmosphere.

still vile

This pub is completely out of place. It should be moved from its canalside location to one of those vast housing estates where quality of beer and food are of no interest to its locals.

Try the Beehive instead - v. good.

London Pride is most dependable beer, usually. Pretty grim modern place, on a main road - don't be fooled by the canalside address and setting, it's not not used much by boaters and they feel unwelcome, on the whole. More karaoke and carvery than real ale and country pub. Quiz nights rather then good quaffing ales. It's not much used by locals, and can be pretty empty when there isn't an 'attraction' on in the evening.

Food mediocre, but said to be improving. Some no-smoking areas. On plus side, very spacious, lots of car parking.

Used to be called The Gongoozler, which was a much more interesting name - it was a term coined in the early 1900s for someone who 'idly contemplates canals'. You'd have to stand on tiptoe on the kids' climbing frame to see the canal, though - what you actually look out on is the marina.

Sorry, on balance, I can't recommend this.
